Bringing this name back up again. I can't let it go!

I am scheduled for my ultrasound tomorrow, so I have to two threads running right now, on the girl forum and boy forum. I’d like to choose a name early enough to get used to it and begin calling our baby by name before birth.

Here’s the thing…I really really like the name Elphaba. Some of you will see both these threads and question my taste in names, which is fine lol. I do like unique and out there names. I asked you berries a little while back what you thought of it and a lot of you said you hated it, and it would be hard to carry. Some of you said it had negative associations because she was a “villain” in Wicked. However, if you read the book and saw the play, you would understand that she is no such thing, she is just painted as such by the government of [name]Oz[/name]. I will include a link via Wikipedia so you can quickly reference what I am saying.
I find the name to be elegant and quirky…and one that has many nn possibilities.
So, assuming many of you will again disagree with me, if you had to look past the fact that you don’t care for the name, could you possibly find a mn to “pretty” it up, or what would you need for counter balance? I should also note that this is only being considered as a first name, and I am not really looking for other suggestions at this point. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.
Thanks berries!

Maybe spell it Elfaba? Then it would have an association with elfs, rather than elephants. I think that is the main issue I have with it.

I agree. Elfaba is more fun and impish. What about:

Elfaba [name]Marit[/name]
Elfaba [name]Colette[/name]
Elfaba [name]Anna[/name]

I’d like to get a beautiful but not over the top mn so she can use that instead of Elphaba/Elfaba should she not like it.

[name]Love[/name] the musical, love the character, love nn Elphie.

Hesitation is that it is so specifically tied to one character, I believe the name was made up as an homage to L [name]Frank[/name] Baum (L-F-B).

I’m not brave enough to use it myself, but if it feels right to you, I agree you might pair it with something classic.

I also like that nn.

Elphaba [name]Rose[/name]
Elphaba [name]Laurel[/name]
Elphaba [name]Kate[/name]
Elphaba [name]Mae[/name]
Elphaba [name]Anne[/name]
Elphaba [name]Hope[/name]

I love the books, and I love the movie - heck, I love all things [name]OZ[/name].

if I thought for one second that it would work in my world - I’d think about it.

If it feels right for you, go for it. All spelling that you want.

I loved the show “Partners” on CBS, and one of the main characters had a dog named Elphaba. Not saying that it’s better on a pet, but it was awesome to hear the name being used so often and fluidly. A lot of these unusual names, we hear them once and think, “um… after the witch? What the…?” But after hearing it used in a real interaction… it became beautiful and real, not just a name in a book. (Though my DH was not impressed when I suggested it while watching.)

I also loved their pronunciation - which was difficult while reading to just slide through: “ELF-ah-Buh” - it’s quirky and cute.

Good luck. Go with what works for you and your baby.

I’m sorry and I don’t mean to be rude at all…but I Hate this name…
I see nothing about it I like and I read it and almost spit Dr pepper everywhere cuz I was taking a drink…

…sorry to hear that

I don’t hate it that much, but it just doesn’t sound like it would be a good name to lay on a child. I like a lot of names from books and film, but I would never name my daughter them. Maybe use this as a middle name then if it means that much to you.

I would suggest a middle name that doesn’t end in “a” and isn’t three syllables.

[name]How[/name] about:
Elphaba [name]Elizabeth[/name] (do you mind alliteration?)
Elphaba [name]Michelle[/name]
Elphaba [name]Simone[/name]
Elphaba [name]Mae[/name]
Elphaba [name]Sage[/name]

Good luck!

You do indeed choose names I’m not sure I’d be brave enough to touch with a ten foot poll. Lol.

I prefer the Elfaba spelling as well. Anything Elf/[name]Fae[/name] related and you’ve probably got me in love.
I know you are thinking about Noir as a mn for a boy. Why not for a girl? Elfaba Noir sounds beautiful to me. I understand the thought to want to choose are safer mn so she has a choice, but it’s not a concern you raised while discussing a boys name so I think that Elfaba Noir or Elphaba Noir would be great.

Well, if you’re really into Wicked and you love the name, then go for it.
On the other hand, I’ve never seen the play, so I don’t have the wicked witch association.
For some of the same sounds, you could… steal [name]Ottilie[/name]'s beautiful Belphoebe. (Sorry [name]Ottilie[/name]!)

Elphaba [name]Simone[/name] is very pretty!! I really like that! And lexiem, I never thought to use Noir for a girl…interesting…

Well we are having a boy! Problem solved lol!
