Ok, I am really liking this name. I like the way it sounds.
But, what about spelling. I want it spelled correctly. But, also spelled so you can know how to say it when looking at it.
One source lists it as [name]Briony[/name]: Greek name of a flowering vine. Another source lists it as a variant of [name]Bryony[/name].
A couple other sources list it as [name]Bryony[/name]: Latin, a strong green vine. The botanical name for twelve species in the genus of [name]Bryonia[/name].
I don’t care for the double "y"s, it looks made up. But, it may actually be the correct way. Hmmm.
I think [name]Bryony[/name] is really pretty, too, and I totally hear you about the Y making it look like a yooneek name!
From what I understand, [name]Bryony[/name] is unfortunately the correct spelling, with [name]Briony[/name] as a variant (literary). At first, I thought [name]Briony[/name] was the authentic spelling, because of the Y issue.

Too bad people took the y trend too far and ruined it for legitimate usage! I have to admit, I have no idea how to say this name. I would still go ahead and spell it authentic, there’s no reason to counteract what looks like a yooneek misspelling with another yooneek misspelling, unless there’s evidence that they are equally valid and acceptable. Not sure how popular the name is and how you could determine that people who have been spelling it [name]Briony[/name] are right in doing so.
I like [name]Bryn[/name] for a middle name except it’s way too redundant. Too too cute. [name]Maeve[/name], I guess is my second choice, and at that, only mildly.
In [name]Pam[/name] and [name]Linda[/name]'s new book, Beyond [name]Ava[/name] and [name]Aiden[/name], it says that [name]Bryony[/name]/[name]Briony[/name] can be pronounced as either “BRY-o-nee” or “[name]BREE[/name]-o-nee.”
I would have guessed either, thinking one way must be correct, as the OP says:

I don’t think that’s an issue of spelling it one way or the other then, that’s more an issue of asserting the pronunciation you like and correcting people when they say it the other way.
This is my sister-in-law’s name. She spells it [name]Briony[/name] and pronounces it [name]BRI[/name]-o-ny. It’s a beautiful choice, and her only gripe is that people consistently have trouble pronouncing it. In fact, at Starbucks, she routinely uses the name [name]Tiffany[/name] when ordering drinks, so as to avoid confusion.
[name]Bryony[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]. I think [name]Bryony[/name] matches your pronunciation best and the international variations (such as [name]Bryonia[/name]) are Bry-.
[name]Briony[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]. I know a [name]Bryony[/name] and people tend to mispronounce it as Byrony (like the male name [name]Byron[/name]) when they first see it.
