Bristol??? Too much baggage with this name?

Help, we really like the name [name]Bristol[/name] for a girl, but does it carry too much baggage? ie: [name]Bristol[/name] [name]Palin[/name]…

I’m sorry I just can’t get past [name]Bristol[/name] [name]Palin[/name] personally, but I know two people who named their child [name]Bristol[/name] in the last couple years. So it is not completely unusable if you love it.

For me [name]Bristol[/name] is a not overly attractive city and cockney rhyming slang for breasts. Can’t really comment on [name]Bristol[/name] [name]Palin[/name] as I’m not American idk how much weight her name carries.

I think of [name]Bristol[/name] [name]Palin[/name] too. As place names go, [name]Bristol[/name] is not a great namesake either imo. It doesn’t conjure up pleasant imagery the way, say, [name]Paris[/name] or [name]India[/name] does.

Have you considered the name Brystal instead? It’s not in the Nameberry database, but it does exist, and last year 73 girls in the U.S. were named Brystal. I know a ten-year-old Brystal as well.

In five years time when your [name]Bristol[/name] was starting school I doubt any of her peers would know who [name]Bristol[/name] [name]Palin[/name] was, the name’s baggage will be quickly shed. Having said that, as a previous poster commented English Berries immediately think ‘show us your Bristols’ shouted from a building site (in rhyming slang [name]Bristol[/name] ships is t*ts ie breasts!).

Too much baggage, plus I think it is a terrible name.

I wouldn’t worry about the [name]Palin[/name] connection, please let’s hope she’s forgotten about by the time your wee lass is in Kindergarten! However, I think the name is not good for a number of reasons I thought when I first heard [name]Bristol[/name] as in [name]Palin[/name].

  • The slang-for-breasts comment…terrible thing to saddle a young girl with!
  • [name]Bristol[/name] board, like the paper. It’s commonly used in elementary school, i.e. prime time for mocking
  • My biggest issue is it sounds like “Bristle” Not a good connotation for what we hope will be a happy young woman

I don’t think it is too much baggage, but I just don’t love the name… sorry…

I think its dreadful. [name]Cross[/name] between bristle and pistol. It was an unflattering choice when the Palins picked it-- and they named their daughter after [name]Bristol[/name] [name]Bay[/name], in Alaska.

Along with the baggage, it’s just very unattractive.

This. I don’t think it has a pretty sound at all, and [name]Bristol[/name] is not exactly romantically lovely place.

I live very near the city of [name]Bristol[/name] in the UK, and although some parts of the area are very pretty, it’s not a place I would personally name my child after.

not a very nice name and too many unpleasant connotations.

I know an adorable little almost 2 year old with this name so I think of her. I guess it depends on what you think other people will think and if that is an issue.

All I can think of when I hear [name]Bristol[/name] is bristle which is not a name I would want applied to myself or my family.

The rhyming slang is [name]Bristol[/name] Cities (t*tties), not [name]Bristol[/name] ships.

I don’t think about the baggage part, I think of how it sounds unattractively like “bristle”.

What exactly do you like about [name]Bristol[/name]? I think it’s far safer to just stay away from the name altogether, but maybe if you can isolate what elements of the name make it attractive to you, we can help you come up with some similar options :3

I think of [name]Palin[/name], for sure. Maybe something similar?
