Brooklyn?

I recently met a little girl named [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] (her younger brothers name: [name_m]Cohen[/name_m]) and it made me realise how much I prefer it (and maybe even love it) on a boy. Before I met this girl my only associations with the name was the place in NY and [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] [name_m]Beckham[/name_m] and it’s always seemed masculine to me despite being a combination of two feminine names. My only issue is that it might be perceived as too feminine? I know a male [name_f]Jade[/name_f] (and have heard of two more), the only [name_u]Eden[/name_u] I know is a boy and I also know a [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] who chooses to be called [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] their completely fine. [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u]'s not a top 100 name here like it is in the US and in 2012 in [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] their were only two more female [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u]'s then male ones.

Whats the general opinion on it? Too feminine? Too tied to the place in NY? Too tacky?

I’ve never thought about the name in terms of either gender, so I can see it working on both. I personally see nothing wrong with boys having ‘feminine’ names (or vice versa).

Not a personal favorite, though. I do like [name_u]Brooke[/name_u]/[name_m]Brookes[/name_m] on a boy, but [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] does remind me too much of the place.

Thank you. I love the nickname [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] for it

[name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] is all girl to me. On boys, I love [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] and I recently read a book where a male character was named [name_m]Booker[/name_m], and I love it as well.

[name_m]Booker[/name_m] doesn’t sound like a name to me but I do love [name_m]Brooks[/name_m]. Thank you

I actually really like it for a boy. It’s rather popular for girls here in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], but I know that it’s primarily male in [name_f]England[/name_f] and [name_m]Wales[/name_m], so there are more boys named [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] than a lot or people realise. I actually like the idea of a slightly more feminine, yet still unisex name on a boy (like [name_u]Addison[/name_u], [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u], [name_u]Eden[/name_u], etc).

It’s a) feminine, b) yes, too tied to NY, and c) tacky as tacky gets.

(I must admit I cringed upon seeing it paired with [name_m]Cohen[/name_m]…)

I had never heard [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] as a boys name until [name_m]Beckham[/name_m]. [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] is better in my opinion

[name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] is a popular boy name here in [name_f]England[/name_f]. I’ve never considered it to be feminine and I actually cringe at the thought of it on a girl - it seems tacky. I do like it on a boy but, in terms of place names, [name_u]Paris[/name_u] will always be my favourite.

I like [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] for a boy! I think it works fine for either a boy or girl, but in my opinion it does sound a bit tacky for a girl.

@haley that’s how I saw it I know boys with pretty feminine names and their fine and [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] is pretty evenly used for both genders here
