Our third baby is due in a month and I thought we’d pretty much decided to name him [name]Jarvis[/name]. But my husband isn’t 100% sure it’s right, though I can’t put my finger on what it is he doesn’t like about it. A number of years ago we picked [name]Jasper[/name] as our second boy’s name, but I feel it’s too popular now. [name]Jarvis[/name] seems similar enough but fresh and different.
So my question is, what do you think of [name]Jarvis[/name] and can you suggest other names we might like. Other names on my list include [name]Chester[/name] (too similar in sound to our surname), [name]Morris[/name], [name]Ralph[/name], [name]Otto[/name], [name]Clement[/name]. Overall my husband finds my choices a little too feminine and wants another name like [name]Leonard[/name] (which is our first son’s full name), strong and masculine.
Oh and ideally this baby’s middle name will be [name]Hudson[/name], my maiden name.
I’m not a fan of [name]Jarvis[/name], but I did have a couple of teachers growing that I called Mr. [name]Jarvis[/name] which may have something to do with my dislike. I think it’s just too surnamey for me now. My first thought for you was [name]Wesley[/name] [name]Hudson[/name] ‘[name]Wes[/name]’. I think that would be really handsome. Some other ideas:
We were discussing [name]Wesley[/name] last night and how we both like it but that it’s been ruined for us by my sister’s rebellious brother-in-law. Such a pity because it is a great name.
We like [name]Theodore[/name] too, but might be too similar to [name]Leonard[/name] with the -eo in the first syllable.
And [name]Philip[/name] is [name]Lenny[/name]'s middle name
I can’t put my finger on it, but I find [name]Jarvis[/name] to be extremely unattractive. Although, I love [name]Leonard[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name]!
[name]Jarvis[/name] seems too surnamey and celebrity next to the classic [name]Leonard[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name]. I’d go for something more vintage classic, but still uncommon on children:
[name]Leonard[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name], and [name]Jarvis[/name] are perfect together. I would be thrilled to meet a baby [name]Jarvis[/name]. It’s so underused.
My first thought with [name]Leonard[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name] was actually [name]Frederick[/name]. I could see [name]Gideon[/name], [name]Vincent[/name], or [name]Gregory[/name] too.
I love the three names together and adore [name]Jarvis[/name] - after all, I have a little 4 month old [name]Jarvis[/name]!
We chose it knowing full well that it wasn’t going to be a crowd pleaser like [name]Thomas[/name] or [name]Oliver[/name]. That’s exactly why we loved it; it’s rare, elegant and most people just don’t think of using it. Despite being a surname, its roots are actually an Ancient Teutonic given name, so it’s totally legit in first spot.
I also have a [name]Felix[/name] and a [name]Theodore[/name] which I think think fit your style. We are SO pleased with our choice. Have a look at the history of it - fascinating! Maybe this will bring your husband around?
I have a cousin [name]Jarvis[/name] and I think it works well, people like it, but it’s a little different. He has a brother named [name]Justice[/name], manly enough for you? lol
Thanks everyone. I do really like [name]Jarvis[/name] for all the reasons above… [name]Just[/name] need to convince my husband!
Ninkynonk- our name choices are quite similar! I wouldn’t use [name]Felix[/name] as it has the same ending as [name]Beatrix[/name], and [name]Theodore[/name] has the -eo in [name]Leonard[/name], and one day he might choose to be known as [name]Leo[/name]. I wouldn’t want a [name]Leo[/name] and a [name]Theo[/name]!
If you love [name]Jarvis[/name], perhaps try convincing the other half that [name]Hudson[/name] provides a nice, handsome touch to the name. [name]Jarvis[/name] isn’t quite my style, but I think it does flow together well.
Hmm…
I’m really not keen on [name]Jarvis[/name], for me [name]Jarvis[/name] sounds really unappealing and sounds a little rough, he hasn’t got the class that [name]Beatrix[/name] and [name]Leonard[/name]. I prefer [name]Jasper[/name], yes maybe [name]Jasper[/name] is rising in popularity but [name]Jasper[/name] sounds so attractive compared to [name]Jarvis[/name]. [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Leonard[/name], and [name]Jasper[/name] sounds perfect. From your other choices I like [name]Morris[/name], [name]Otto[/name], and [name]Clement[/name]. But I understand that these names don’t have the same masculine stance that [name]Leonard[/name] has.

[name]Miles[/name] [name]Hudson[/name] - [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Leonard[/name] & [name]Miles[/name]
[name]Beatrix[/name] was one of my top girl names and obviously I could never have used it, having a [name]Felix[/name] I also loved [name]Theodora[/name] for a girl but couldn’t have had that either if the third was a girl. I was so set on [name]Juno[/name] but wondered if it was too close to [name]Theo[/name] to be used.
To me, [name]Jarvis[/name] is all upper crust British and a bit artsy, like [name]Jarvis[/name] Cocker, whom our little [name]Jarvis[/name] is named for. I understand that in some parts of the USA, it’s a redneck name but we live in Australia. I understand the mind you are looking at [name]Jarvis[/name] in, which is how I see it. To me, [name]Jarvis[/name] goes perfectly with [name]Leonard[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name], style-wise!
I love the name [name]Jarvis[/name]! I think that you should definitely go with it. And it goes so well with [name]Leonard[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name]!
[name]Just[/name] to add, we may have a baby [name]Jarvis[/name], but my husband really wanted [name]Wolfgang[/name] (Wolfie) and I wanted [name]Rupert[/name] or [name]Reuben[/name], initially.
I like [name]Jarvis[/name] better than either of those two now, but maybe they will appeal?
