We’re having another boy and can’t find a name we like – help! The little guy will have the middle name [name_m]Austin[/name_m] and last name [name_m]Smith[/name_m]. His big brother is [name_m]Bennett[/name_m], which is a name we absolutely adore despite its growing popularity.
If we had a girl we’d name her “[name_u]Merritt[/name_u] [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]”, so unique+strong names are great. We like [name_u]Everett[/name_u], but something seems off… maybe an old-man vibe. [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] is okay, but too trendy. [name_m]Beckett[/name_m] is nice, but too similar to [name_m]Bennett[/name_m]. We’re playing around with “[name_m]Hewitt[/name_m]”, but [name_m]Hewitt[/name_m] [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m] is starting to sound like a law firm. [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is nice, but an awkward transition to [name_m]Smith[/name_m]; also, it’s heavily skewed to girls these days. [name_m]Tucker[/name_m] is nice, but sounds a tad pretentious to my ear (probably because of bow tie clad Tucker Carlson). [name_m]Miller[/name_m] is cool, but doesn’t sound good with [name_m]Smith[/name_m], also the double “trade name” is odd.
And with that, I’m completely stuck. Any help is greatly appreciated. By the way, we aren’t stuck on names ending in “tt”; however, we like a strong consonant before the “S” in [name_m]Smith[/name_m]. We’re avoiding alliteration and single syllable names.
Out of curiosity, Are you open to an “ending in ett/itt” theme? You have some great options, particularly [name_u]Everett[/name_u]. I like [name_m]Hewitt[/name_m] as well, and though I understand the law firm sound, usually you won’t use his middle name and that lessons the effect. I was trying to come up with some suggestions for you and it occurred to me that you might like the name we’ve chosen for our son, who’s due to arrive next week: Truett.
Best wishes!
[name_m]How[/name_m] would you feel about using [name_u]Merritt[/name_u] for either a boy or a girl? I think it works very well on a boy too. Other suggestions that are some of my favourites…
@boyandgirl Liking the name Holden more and more. Thanks for the suggestion!
@whitegardenia We’re going to hold on to Merritt for next child, which I’m hoping is a girl! Crosby Austin Smith is a great name, hadn’t seen that one previously. Thanks!
My spouse and I are getting more conviction around Hewitt. It’s cute for a kid and should “grow up” nicely into professional life. I understand it means “little smart one” and people sometimes use the nickname “Witt”, which I find amusing. Any reasons you can think of that we shouldn’t use Hewitt Austin Smith?
Thanks for all the replies – great community here on Nameberry.
The only reason I can think of to not use it is the matchy -tt ending, but you are OK with that so good on you! I also like the nn [name_m]Witt[/name_m], or even [name_m]Huey[/name_m]. [name_m]Huey[/name_m] and [name_m]Ben[/name_m] sound like fun brothers!
Here’s a few ideas, sorry if there’s any repeats!
[name_u]Sutton[/name_u]
[name_u]Dayton[/name_u]
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_u]Macon[/name_u]
[name_m]Decker[/name_m]
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]
@ffennec [name_m]Ben[/name_m] + [name_m]Huey[/name_m] = too cute. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it!
@cport87 We love [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]! If next child is a boy and [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] drops from the top 100 we’ll definitely use it. Although, [name_m]Decker[/name_m] [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m] is pretty cool. Gonna have to run that one by my Spouse.
@rkrd [name_m]Hoyt[/name_m] is so unique! I went to a boy scout camp after that name. Cool. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] was our #1 until we saw that it was in the top 10 in 3 countries. We like it enough that perhaps we’ll overlook that. [name_m]Bennet[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is a great sib-set.
One last question for the group. What’s the first thing you think of when you hear “[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]”?
I really like [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m] or [name_u]Everett[/name_u] [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m].
I really like [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m] or [name_u]Everett[/name_u] [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m].
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] makes me think of a smart, popular, sociable guy I knew in college. For me, it’s a good association. I think [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] is a handsome name.
I would very strongly suggest that if you are probably going to use a -tt ending on 2/3 of your children, you should use it on all of your children so that no one feels left out.

Other suggestions:

I love [name_m]Hewitt[/name_m]! I hadn’t ever heard that one. I think you should use it. [name_m]Witt[/name_m] is a cute nickname too!
I automatically think of the running back when I see or hear [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]. Lots of people will make that correlation, so that would just depend on if that bothers you or would bother the child. If it were me, I would steer clear, because it could get old for the child getting that remark his whole life
