… on [name_f]Abyssinia[/name_f] as a first name.
I can see why you like it, it has a nice sound and you could get a range of nicknames.
However: it also sounds a bit like ‘I be seein’ ya’ to me, it’s the name of an Empire which just feels a little odd to give a child, and I don’t think it looks very nice. Also it’s the name of a MASH episode, which probably won’t mean much to many people but it does to me.
So, overall, not a fan. Sorry.
(I mentioned this post to my SO, he says it sounds made up).
Very close to the type of cat.
And I am not 100% sure how to say it without thinking it through carefully, I think it could be a struggle for anyone unfamiliar with the name.
It has a pretty sound but it will be a spelling/pronunciation struggle for her lifetime.
Strictly on sound, I like it. But I can’t get past “abyss.”
It looks ok but I can in no way pronounce it so not really fond of it to be honest!
I really like the name [name_f]Abyssinia[/name_f], but I worry about it’s practicality. It’s a very long sounding name, five syllables if I’m counting correctly, and slightly intimidating to look at. Such a big name might not work the best nowadays.
Brutally honest? I don’t like it. It’s too much, and “abyss” is prominent.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about Illyria?
I think it’s a pleasant sounding name, and that the issues other posters have mentioned could be overlooked, especially for a middle name.
I do think it veers a bit too close to cultural appropriation for my taste, though, unless it were used by someone of Ethiopian descent.). I’d feel similarly about [name_u]Persia[/name_u] (for example)
I can think of all sorts of exceptions, of course, but if you’re not Ethiopian and the name doesn’t hold deep personal significance for you, I’d probably advise choosing something else. [name_f]Alyssia[/name_f], for instance, or [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]/Alyssium or Elysium/Elysian/[name_f]Elysia[/name_f]
I’m not a fan, sorry. I can see why you like it as a name, but the overriding links to the Kingdom of [name_f]Abyssinia[/name_f], which is now called Ethiopia, are too strong for me to even consider this as a name.
It’s apparently a slang for “I’ll be seeing ya!” (which I just found out in a Buzzfeed quiz, so take it with a grain of salt). It’s very long and regal-sounding, but I agree that it may be too much. I believe it would be a beautiful middle name, though!
I didn’t think twice about pronunciation: ah-bih-SIN-ee-ah, so I must’ve heard it somewhere and I think it’s pretty intuitive. I think it flows well and sounds nice. It’s a bit fussy to me, but long, flowery girls’ names are on trend so I don’t think it’s out of place next to [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Katarina[/name_f], etc.
I think the nn [name_u]Abby[/name_u] makes it accessible, though I’d lean more towards [name_f]Sina[/name_f] (see-nah).
@primbutcher [name_f]Sina[/name_f] is a beautiful nickname.
However, this name reminds me of the Abyssinian cat breed, and also of Absinthe (which I think sounds only marginally better than Abyssinian).
Maybe you would like the sound of one of these?
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
[name_f]Antonia[/name_f]
[name_f]Apolonia[/name_f]
[name_f]Arsenia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]
[name_f]Selenia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophronia[/name_f]
[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]
Hm… It’s pretty, and the nicknames could be gorgeous. It’s really not my style though. It’s a bit too ‘out there’ for me. Sorry.
Well, IMHO:
It is a little too complex (for me, anyway). Also, I dislike that it begins with abyss.
[name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] could be a pretty alternative! Although it is still quite frilly.
For me, it’s not a favorite name, but I can see it’s appeal. My only worry is that the ‘abyss’ part might invoke some teasing. It also might be tough to pronounce and explain if asked about. If you truly love it though, I say go for it!
I think it’s usable, but brave. It reminds me of the cat breed with a similar name, which is a good association, but very strong. That it’s the name of an empire doesn’t bother me because place names and such are so popular. If you love it, go for it!
Sounds a lot like I be seeing ya, and seems like too much for a baby girl
Doesn’t look appealing on paper…all I can see is “abyss”. Plus, pronunciation can get confusing and it does not have the most flowy, feminine sound.
This brutally honest feedback is immensely helpful – warmest thanks to each of you!
[name_u]Truly[/name_u] abysmal.
