Brynley

Hello!
I am brand new to nameberry (although I have been reading all the posts blogs etc for a couple months and love it! )and thought I would post on the name my husband loves for a girl, I am not sure if adding the ley onto the end of [name]Bryn[/name] makes it sound too little girl ish? I love [name]Brynn[/name] and would love to use it but my husband insists the name should be Brynley what does everyone think? I like it but not sure …

Forgot to add my sister’s name is [name]Leah[/name] and Brynley or rather Brynnlea or Brynlea is a way to kind of honer her…?

I’m sorry, but I think it’s awful. It’s very trendy and doesn’t sound like it will age well at all. Dr. Brynley? It sounds a little silly to me.

[name]Bryn[/name] isn’t my favorite, but it’s a lot nicer than Brynley.

What about [name]Bria[/name]?

I agree. [name]Bryn[/name] is respectable (i like it better than [name]Brynn[/name]), but [name]Bria[/name] or [name]Bridget[/name] would be lovely.

I disagree completely! I have always loved this name. So what if its trendy? [name]Henry[/name] & [name]Lily[/name] are also trendy yet respectable names in my opinion. I love [name]Brinley[/name] spelled this way. I think it honors your sister nice. I also love [name]Brynn[/name] too though & I don’t think you could go wrong with either.

I don’t think names like [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Lily[/name], which have very long histories of use, will ever sound dated. Brynley, on the other hand, already sounds like it only fits a child. Adding a -ley on something doesn’t make it more feminine, it makes it more dated. In 50 years, Brynley will be a middle-aged name, like [name]Janet[/name] is now, and in 80 years, it’ll be an old lady name. It blends into all the -ley names: [name]Hailey[/name], [name]Bailey[/name], Braylie, [name]Miley[/name], [name]Riley[/name], [name]Kylie[/name], [name]Kaylee[/name], Mayley, [name]Hadley[/name], etc. These names are very 2000’s and will not hold up well. I doubt that our children’s generation will find those names appealing- Brynley and [name]Kaylee[/name] are the [name]Tiffani[/name] and [name]Amber[/name] of the future.

Think of all the “old lady” names now coming into vogue: they all have a similar structure of about five letters, two syllables, double consonants in the middle, and ending in a vowel (usually A.) These names include [name]Thelma[/name], [name]Bertha[/name], [name]Edna[/name], [name]Myrtle[/name], [name]Elsie[/name], [name]Alma[/name], [name]Velma[/name], and [name]Wilma[/name]. They all sound old-ladyish, even the ones that are coming back in style, because of their structure. The -ley names will do the same thing.

But back to the question- I think [name]Brynn[/name] is a very nice, and I think it will age much better. It’s also less likely to be confused with all the other -ley names out there. I think it’s one of the best unisex names for a girl.

Brynley is far too immature sounding, sorry. :frowning:

If you did [name]Brynn[/name], and her middle name of [name]Leigh[/name] that’d be better. Then your DH could call her “Brynley” all he wants.

If your heart is set on Brynley, go with it. You are the final say. I personally prefer [name]Bryn[/name] to Brynley. I don’t have a quick reference to a Brynley so it sounds a bit made up (I could be very wrong, just my exposure to names). I too prefer [name]Bryn[/name] to [name]Brynn[/name]. P.s. I love [name]Henry[/name], no matter how popular it is right now…its still so solid and historical that it trumps the trend for me.

Matter of opinion I guess.

[name]Bryn[/name] is actually a boys name so I can’t see it on a girl, if you look up it’s origins (it’s welsh). I’m not against using other culture names, but if you do, I think you should respect them and save it for a boy.

Brynley would probably be the girl alternative, but as others said, it doesn’t really age well…

Thanks so much for the feedback everyone! Its given me a lot to present my husband with for sure! Ha. I like the idea of using [name]Leigh[/name] for the middle name lol then he can call her Brynley.

I like [name]Brynn[/name] more than Brynley…I think its beautiful…I like [name]Bria[/name] too…bryn is not a very good boys name…there are too many litle girl [name]Brynn[/name]'s

Please remember that [name]Bryn[/name] is a boy name. [name]Brynn[/name] is for girls

I think [name]Bryn[/name], [name]Brynn[/name], Brynnley, or however you choose to spell it, is pretty irredeemably ugly, but [name]Bridget[/name] or [name]Bryony[/name] would be wonderful.

I prefer [name]Bryn[/name] to Brynley. I typically dislike “ley”-ending names (my one exception being my favorite name of [name]Everly[/name]). And if you spell it Brynlea I think you’ll just confuse people. If you’d like to honor your sister, I’d suggest [name]Bryn[/name] [name]Leah[/name] for her FN and MN combo. Otherwise, I’m not a fan of either [name]Bryn[/name] or Brynley.

As a couple of pp’s have said,[name]Bryn[/name] is a boys name, why not save it for a boy?

I don’t like Brynley, I don’t think it will age well at all.

I like Brynley a lot! I don’t think it’s too childish at all. And as for all the negative comments, adding an N to [name]Bryn[/name] does not make it anymore feminine. Use what you love.

I think what they’re getting at is the culture clash. [name]Bryn[/name] is welsh and strictly for boys. If you add an n, and make it [name]Brynn[/name], it doesn’t exactly tie into the Welsh version and can be used for girls. I think it’s just not respectful to use [name]Bryn[/name] period, even with an extra n, on a girl and save it for a boy, where it’s appropriate.

[name]Brinley[/name] is much more appropriate.

It’s nms, but I much prefer [name]Brynn[/name] to Brynley/Brynlea. I would suggest using [name]Brynn[/name] instead of [name]Bryn[/name] since [name]Bryn[/name] is a boy’s name and many identify it as such.

[name]Bryn[/name] can just as easily be used for a girl too. I don’t really care where it comes from. Times change as do names. I think it’s VERY feminine.
