Bryony or Briony

[name]Bryony[/name] or [name]Briony[/name]

Which version do you prefer?

I vastly prefer [name]Briony[/name]. The double Y thing in [name]Bryony[/name] irks me, lol. I even changed the spelling of my name to avoid a Y.

Oh - and i [name]LOVE[/name] the name.

I prefer the proper spelling, [name]Bryony[/name]

First of all great name choice!
I would chose [name]Briony[/name] because I feel that there would be less of a chance for people to mispronounce it. With [name]Bryony[/name] I think a lot of people would say the first part either as Bry (like [name]Rye[/name] but with a B) instead of the [name]Brie[/name] sounding.

[name]Hope[/name] that I could help!

I prefer [name]Briony[/name] because two “Y’s” in a name bother me.

I prefer [name]Bryony[/name] because I like botanical names spelled like the actual plant. So [name]Bryony[/name] over [name]Briony[/name] and [name]Lily[/name] over [name]Lilly[/name], etc.

Oh wow, I’ve always thought it was [name]Bri[/name] as in [name]Rye[/name]! I don’t know if I can switch my mind around to saying it that way now. That being said, I love the name, and prefer it [name]Briony[/name].

I prefer the spelling [name]Briony[/name]. But I would still pronounce it brI-oh-nee.

The first syllable is pronounced with a long ‘i’, as in 'rye.

I prefer the [name]Bryony[/name] spelling because it’s the original, and because it doesn’t remind me of the boys’ name [name]Brian[/name] (which I dislike).

Are you a mumsnetter OP? There’s a thread about this on there too.

I prefer the [name]Bryony[/name] spelling. It is pronounced Bry like [name]Rye[/name] isn’t it? I’ve never heard of it being said [name]Bree[/name]-ony!

I have always said [name]Bree[/name]-ony in my head, but I have never heard anyone else say the name before so I never thought that it would be pronounced another way. I could be wrong, but thats just how I have always pronounced it

@hayley88 …no, but I am totally checking the site out now…

Everything I have seen has indicated that the Bry/[name]Bri[/name] would rhyme with “[name]Rye[/name]”.

The [name]Bryony[/name] spelling was the only one I was familiar with for quite some time, however, in the [name]Sherlock[/name] [name]Holmes[/name] case “A Scandal in [name]Bohemia[/name],” [name]Irene[/name] Adler stays at the [name]Briony[/name] [name]Lodge[/name] and it just got me questioning why I prefer the “Bry” over the “[name]Bri[/name]” version.

A lovely name. I definitely prefer [name]Briony[/name]. I think it’s slightly more intuitive, and the double ‘y’ makes it a much less attractive, sophisticated name [name]IMO[/name]. Not sure why, but there you go!

I love this name and definitely prefer the [name]Briony[/name] spelling.

My brother’s name is [name]Bryan[/name], so I’d probably use [name]Bryony[/name] as a nod to him, and with the long I sound.
I do love [name]Briony[/name] with an “EE” sound for the I, though, and I actually prefer it, even though it’s likely not the version I’d personally use.
