Yay, I love [name_m]Horatio[/name_m]! The other day a character on [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] 99 was using it as an alias and my roommate turned to me and went, ā€œthat is an awesome name.ā€

I think [name_m]Harry[/name_m] and [name_u]Rory[/name_u] are most accessible and make the most sense. It might be easiest to just wait and see which nickname feels the most ā€œhimā€ (if it is a him, of course.)

If you and your husband are planning to call him [name_m]Horatio[/name_m], I would call him [name_m]Horatio[/name_m]. Most of my friends and extended family use full names, no nicknames. Some have pet names used only at home and not all the time. There have been a handful of times that some have been called something else and they would just correct the person.

AMAZING name! Such a strong choice, I love it!

I chose [name_m]Hoyt[/name_m] because it feels more fitting with the uniqueness of [name_m]Horatio[/name_m]. Although I possibly like [name_m]Harry[/name_m] the most, this is obviously a more popular name in general and make less of a nod to the ultra cool [name_m]Horatio[/name_m].

Having said all that, [name_m]Harry[/name_m] does have the same sound as the beginning of his name so possibly spelling it differently might make it feel less classic? I agree about [name_m]Fox[/name_m] not working as well being a middle nn but I do love [name_m]Fox[/name_m]. You could call him [name_m]Harry[/name_m]-[name_m]Fox[/name_m] when heā€™s tiny like people use ā€˜bearā€™ after there little oneā€™s name!

[name_m]Just[/name_m] thought of [name_u]Rex[/name_u]. Any thoughts there?

@lovemysweeties, we are considering the no nickname option, definitely. [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to hear of a family where that works.

[name_m]Horatio[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m] is such a cool name. I like [name_m]Harry[/name_m], [name_u]Rex[/name_u] and [name_m]Fox[/name_m]

I agree, just call him [name_m]Horatio[/name_m].

Only one person in my extended family uses a nickname, and thatā€™s my cousin that goes by [name_u]Alex[/name_u] instead of [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. My name is 8 letters and 3 syllables, with a really obvious and easy nickname, but Iā€™ve never gone by one.

I would wait to meet him before nicknaming him. Iā€™m sure one of the possible nicknames will suit his look and personality more than the others.

[name_m]Even[/name_m] though I really like [name_u]Roy[/name_u] and [name_u]Ray[/name_u] (and [name_m]Harry[/name_m] a bit too), I agree that [name_m]Hoyt[/name_m] feels more fitting as a nickname for [name_m]Horatio[/name_m]. Keeps it unique but accessible and intuitively makes sense as a nickname. Great full name, by the way.

Another nickname idea: [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]

I would call him [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] and
expect others to follow likewise. If you have to do a nickname, I would choose [name_m]Harry[/name_m].

my husband came in and asked what I was doing. I told him about the poll and he thinks [name_u]Hero[/name_u] would be a good nickname.

Eeeekkk! I absolutely love and completely adore [name_m]Horatio[/name_m], so, so much! [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m] is incredibly handsome! I love that youā€™d mostly call him [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] too, itā€™s too brilliant a name to hide away ;). Iā€™m inclined to agree with previous posters that everyone else would (or should) to, if you introduce him as such. But I gotta say, I havenā€™t even thought of some of these nicknames; the best I could think of was [name_m]Hiro[/name_m]. I do love [name_u]Rory[/name_u] from your list, but [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] in full is perfect. I really hope Iā€™ll have a little [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] one day hehe. Good luck and congrats :)!

I like [name_m]Harry[/name_m] and [name_u]Rory[/name_u] most, both are lovely shortenings - [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is more unusual, though, and absolutely adorable! [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m] is gorgeous by the way

[name_u]Hero[/name_u] is perfect!

I know a Reto (pronounced almost [name_u]REY[/name_u]-toh, like the German pronunciation here : reto pronunciation: How to pronounce reto in Spanish, Portuguese, Esperanto, German, Italian).
I donā€™t know him well, so Iā€™m not sure of the spelling or if itā€™s a nickname - it could be Reito or Raito, but Iā€™d guess Reto based on his background/accent. A quick Google search suggests itā€™s a distinctly Swiss name.

I think Reto works well as a nn for [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] - easy to say, sounds familiar (like [name_u]Rafe[/name_u], [name_m]Nate[/name_m], Cato etc), but wonā€™t disappear among the other [name_m]Harrys[/name_m] and Rorys and it keeps the -o ending. I think you mentioned Swiss heritage in your post on girlsā€™ names, too?

The Raito spelling (a Japanese one, apparently - I think you mentioned in another thread that your husband and you speak Japanese?) might work even better as a shortening of [name_m]Horatio[/name_m].

Whatever you choose, your son will have a great name, with lots of nickname options to choose from if he decides to when heā€™s older.
Congratulations!

@oneofthetrio, [name_u]Hero[/name_u] is nice. We are considering [name_m]Hiro[/name_m] for the Japanese name.

@a_r, Reto is really nice and works on many levels because it is easy enough to say in each of the languages we speak on a regular basis.

I think we will keep it at full [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] for now and if we need nickname options, we know we have plenty of good options. Thanks, everyone!

I expect that when heā€™s born (if heā€™s a he), youā€™ll find some nicknames come more naturally than others. Youā€™ve got plenty of time to decide.

All the best of luck.

[name_m]Horatio[/name_m] is such a cool name! I would use the full name too. I know a lot of people with 3 or 4 syllable names that donā€™t get shortened, or if they do itā€™s more like a pet name than something they go by on a regular basis, so I donā€™t see it as a problem. The fact that thereā€™s no one common, default nickname makes it easier to enforce that too- itā€™s a lot more likely that a [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] would get [name_m]Ben[/name_m] than a [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] would get any nickname, for instance. If you were to use one though, I like [name_m]Harry[/name_m] and [name_u]Rory[/name_u].
