Butterfly Clips, Frosted Lips and 3D Chips - Nostalgic for the Early Aughts.

I’m struggling quite a bit with middle names for my girls list, I can’t seem to settle on anything.

For me, when it comes to my girls list, they’re all names that I’m honestly a bit nostalgic towards. They’re the names I’ve loved since childhood - either because of the sitcom reruns / teen dramas I watched so frequently with my mom, the older sisters of friends who I looked up to/admired, or names that I gave to my Barbies (or that already came with them, like [name_u]Kelly[/name_u] and [name_u]Christie[/name_u] and [name_f]Krissy[/name_f]).

I’d kind of like MNs to continue that trend for me but I’m not really sure where to begin.

I’m a child of the mid-late 90s, born in 1995 and grew up deeply rooted in the pop culture of the time, lol.

For me, the imagery takes me back to brightly coloured butterfly hairclips thrown randomly into twisted strands of hair, tie-dyed t-shirts and mismatched outfits with shades of orange, purple, blue, green pink and yellow.

I picture carefree, breezy summer days, swing sets, games of tag with childhood friends, rolling in freshly cut lawns with laughter as your childhood best friend tells you about her older sister’s new boyfriend, teasing the big kids.

I see [name_f]Cherry[/name_f] [name_m]Kool[/name_m]-Aid stained smiles, plopping down on a blue inflatable chair to watch [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f] [name_m]McGuire[/name_m], trying to style your hair to match her fun twists and scattered mini-buns, and trips to the mall for brightly coloured crop tops and floral pants or dancing to the latest [name_m]Aaron[/name_m] [name_u]Carter[/name_u] song.

Sorry if the imagery isn’t quite clear, a lot of it is pretty personal but hopefully it works?

What combinations (using my list of first names below) would you suggest to fit this image?

My birth name is [name_u]Kelly[/name_u] [name_f]Nicole[/name_f] and I hate it with every single fiber of my physical being so it’s really surprising to see someone actually have it on a list that isn’t called something like “Tacky Outdated Mom Names”.

I grew up resenting my mother quite a bit for naming me such a seemingly uninteresting and extremely common name while both of my sisters got cool and unusual names. I never got compliments on my name, while they did. I’d get teased in school, called “smelly kelly” + “jelly kelly” just because it rhymed. It made me overly conscious with my weight (had to make sure I didn’t jiggle like jelly) which turned into an eating disorder and overly aware of how I smelled (had to make sure I didn’t smell and so I would take up to 4 showers a day).

I am now going through the process of changing my entire name. I also know quite a few people, people that I’ve grown up with, that had the same names as some of the ones in your list that have also legally changed theirs.

I’m sorry I don’t have any combos for you but I just wanted to give you a personal perspective of my own experience in being named [name_u]Kelly[/name_u]. I also know everyone is different and that if you do end up naming your daughter a “90s old school” name they may actually love it and never even question it… but they also may grow to hate it like I did and want to change it one day. And so if they do I hope you respect their decision if they ever choose to do so. My mother has never supported my decision and it’s one of the reasons why I’ve cut her out of my life.

Names can have a big impact on a child’s life.

That being said, I wish you good luck in your search.

I’ve never liked my name and it’s a widely accepted classic. You never know what the child will like so I think as long as the choices are within reason (e.g. not celebrity style names) then go with what you love and has meaning for you, it’s really the best thing you can do.

*I’m sure you’re much better versed than I am on 90s names, but I thought I’d give some suggestions from not on your list.

I sympathize with your dislike for your name, but this feels more like deeply-rooted personal feelings towards it rather than a generic outside look.

[name_u]Kelly[/name_u] is a name very near and dear to my heart, it has everything I look for in a name, and for S/O and I, it’s perfect in every way. I’m sorry that you had a poor experience and that the name left a sour taste in your mouth, but I don’t feel that this was an appropriate post to comment this on, or an appropriate way to vent your feelings toward the name.

I also am somewhat offended by the fact that you a) posted this in the first place on my thread about middle names and not privately messaged me instead, and b) that you essentially pleaded with me to try and convince me to raise my future children a certain way. [name_m]How[/name_m] I react to my future child MAYBE changing their name is honestly nobody’s business.

Your reply has truly upset me. I know that you were trying to be helpful and spare my future child from your experiences, but as you said, everybody’s experience is and will be different. I feel as though I have now been publicly put on the spot and made to feel badly about my favourite name, because of a comment that was completely unrelated to what I had asked.

Once again, I’m sorry about your experience and for how you feel about your name, but please do remember that there is an immense difference between disliking your own name for personal reasons and the name being a poor choice for a child.
