Cajetan pronunciation?

Hey, berries! I’ve been considering [name_m]Cajetan[/name_m] (maybe nn Jet?), but there aren’t a lot of sources I’m finding on how to pronounce [name_m]Cajetan[/name_m], and the answers I do find conflict. How would you pronounce this name?

[name_f][/name_f]

Thanks!

It’s Cayetan – another form of [name_m]Caetano[/name_m] or [name_m]Gaetano[/name_m].

The ‘j’ is pronounced like a ‘j’ because this is the [name_f]English[/name_f] form spelled with a C (Cajétan with the accent is French).

[name_f][/name_f]

Honestly though, if I hadn’t looked that up I would have assumed the ‘j’ was a ‘y’, because that’s true of [name_m]Kajetan[/name_m] with a K.

Very helpful answer, thank you! Where would you put the emphasis when pronouncing it?

I think it’s explained well here: How to Pronounce Cajetan? (CORRECTLY) - YouTube

The pronunciation differs from the Italian (or from Kajetan), as it is specifically an anglicization, so you could pronounce the J- sound (KAJ-uh-tuhn) rather than use a y-

There’s no such thing as emphasis in my accent, so I guess I’ll agree with the previous poster [name_f][/name_f]- it sounds like kaj-uh-tuhn.

Makes sense! Thank you!

I would have said Kai-yeh-tahn too, until I looked it up! [name_f][/name_f] I still can’t wrap my mind around actually using the j sound, but I do love the look of the name!

I do, too! I wish I loved the pronunciation..

Personally, if I was say a Kindergarten teacher, and saw this name I’d never seen before, would pronounce it Cah-jeh-tahn. That is the A makes a sound like the O in Octopus, and the JE is like [name_m]Jet[/name_m] but w/o the T as that would be attached to the 3rd syllable sounding again like the O in Octopus. I’m not sure that is at all the “proper” way to pronounce but just how *I* would do it.
