I came up with [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] [name_u]Maria[/name_u] [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] a day or two ago when I started coming up with a themed [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] UC, but I’ve fallen so hard I’m seriously considering adding her to my list. I have a couple questions, though, that I’m hoping you might be able to help with.
- Is it too Christmassy? [name_u]Truly[/name_u], I don’t think most people would realize [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] is related to [name_u]Christmas[/name_u], and [name_u]Maria[/name_u] doesn’t have to be a [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] name, but it still feels like [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] wrapped up in a combo. ([name_u]Maria[/name_u] and [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] also honor family–this wasn’t necessarily planned.)
- What would you imagine a [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] to be like?
- Could you see her as a sister to [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Ayla[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Oona[/name_f], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/Kit, [name_f]Tirzah[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_u]Tali[/name_u], [name_f]Liliana[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]?
- What would your preferred nn be? I’m leaning toward [name_f]Annie[/name_f] but I’m wondering if [name_f]Calla[/name_f] or [name_f]Thea[/name_f] might be more natural. Anything more unexpected that you’d love to see as a nn for [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f]?
- Is [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] itself too much to wear on a daily basis/too weird for the general public?
Thank you, berries!
I think it is a great name.

Is it too Christmassy? Maybe, but only fellow namers would realize it. Most people won’t have a clue. Also, with [name_u]Maria[/name_u] and [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] being family honors, the name will be a sweet tribute to family when most people look at it.
-
I’ve never been good at describing what I think a person named _____ would be like.
-
I’ll have to come back to this one later as I don’t do well with this spur of the moment.
-
[name_f]Annie[/name_f] would be an unexpected yet awesome nickname, although people might question it if they are unsure on how to say the name. I would love to see a [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] nn [name_f]Annie[/name_f], but [name_f]Calla[/name_f] or [name_f]Thea[/name_f] could be nice as well.

I think [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] would be perfect as a name; not at all too much to wear on a daily basis. In comparison to many of the others I’ve heard lately, it is actually relatively sedate, but it still holds an air of mystery and excitement.

Calanthe [name_u]Maria[/name_u] [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] is bold and beautiful and I love the subtle christmas theme that most people wouldn’t even notice
Calanthe is sweet, gentle and artistic
Calanthe is a bit different in style to your other choices but I could see it working with some of the longer ones like [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
Callie or [name_f]Calla[/name_f] would be my go to nicknames. [name_f]Cat[/name_f], [name_f]Kitty[/name_f], [name_u]Lannie[/name_u] or [name_f]Cathy[/name_f] could be others
I think [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] is similar enough to [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] or [name_f]Callie[/name_f] that it works
I don’t think [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] [name_u]Maria[/name_u] [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] is too Christmassy! It’s a lovely combo
I knew a [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] (different spelling though) years ago, I remember her being very bubbly and sweet, rather outgoing, and very caring towards everyone. She always looked out for other kids in her class and younger kids outside when she was at recess.
I think [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] fits in well with a lot of your names! The [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] I knew went by [name_f]Callie[/name_f] at the time. I think [name_f]Annie[/name_f] can work but [name_f]Calla[/name_f]/Thea would likely be most people’s go-to, I think? I definitely don’t think it’s any more “too much” than [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] or [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], it doesn’t seem weird at all to me!
Thank you, everyone! I’m glad to know that people think it’s both wearable and not TOO Christmassy… I will have to decide if I like it in general, or like it for ME, I guess, because it feels almost too ethereal for my own tastes, but I do like her a lot!

I don’t think it’s too Christmassy. I associate it first with [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] from The Witcher (an unapologetic badass) and second with its “[name_u]Christmas[/name_u] orchid” meaning.
This is the name I’m naming a daughter if I ever have one. [name_f]My[/name_f] son is [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m], so it fits. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite nickname is [name_f]Calla[/name_f]. [name_f]Callie[/name_f] or [name_f]Thea[/name_f] could work, and [name_f]Annie[/name_f] is softer than “[name_f]Anthe[/name_f]”. Lol.
As far as wearability, it depends on a lot of factors. People will naturally think it’s an unusual since most have never heard it. No babies were born with that name in 2019 in the US (I checked the Social Security data to make sure). If you love it, others will warm up to it. And if they don’t, that’s not an affront to you.
