Call me crazy

Call me crazy but my husband and I both are really liking the name [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] for a little girl. Weird, right? It’s one of those names that my husband will bring up on his own (which is RARE), so while I wouldn’t have considered it before, it’s starting to grow on me. I think if we used it, it would probably be short for [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] but I know there are other options out there. Any suggestions?

I like it! It’s unique without being weird. We tend to gravitate towards the same type of names. Our newborn daughter is a Sally.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn’t offer any suggestions. Just got excited about the Hildie part, haha. The only names I can think of to use that as a nickname for are Hildegard and Brunhilda. Which would both be cool options to go with your son’s name.

This is going to sound weird but we named our dog [name_f]Sally[/name_f] a few years ago and I regret doing so because the more I hear it the more I like it for a little girl!

I love it! I really like [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] for a more “formal” option and I think, like [name_m]Konrad[/name_m], it’s identifiably Germanic, yet accessible to English speakers.

Most longer options I can think of sound a bit too heavy to my ear, especially compared to the more ladylike Germanic names on your list. Exceptions: [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] and [name_f]Clothilde[/name_f], both of which sound pretty and usable. I’m pretty sure it’s not traditional but I could sort of see [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] coming out of [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f].

I never thought of that option! Hmmm, I may have to mull that one over. I usually like clunky, but options like [name_f]Brunhilda[/name_f], etc. just sound so harsh.

[name_f]Hildie[/name_f] is adorable. I know one, my doctor’s assistant, and as far as I know she’s just [name_f]Hildie[/name_f].

Isolieth has excellent ideas with [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] and [name_f]Clothilde[/name_f]. Great names!

Also, if [name_f]Sally[/name_f] is a name you’ll regret not using for a child you could always change your dog’s name. Dogs take extremely well to those things if it’s worked into the normal routine.

I have an example: I had a dog named [name_m]Buddy[/name_m] that I got when he was a couple years old. I decided to change his name to [name_m]Beau[/name_m]. You just have to work the new name in with the old name. I called him [name_m]Buddy[/name_m] at first, then [name_m]Buddy[/name_m]-[name_m]Beau[/name_m], [name_m]Beau[/name_m]-[name_m]Buddy[/name_m], Beaudy, and then just [name_m]Beau[/name_m]. I changed his name in stages to prevent confusion for him. By the time I got to just [name_m]Beau[/name_m] it was a normal name for him and he never misunderstood me or came when I said the word buddy.

I don’t think it’s strange… I have been pondering [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] this very week, as it was the name of one of my great-grandmothers. I like it! And [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] would be right in line with all the little [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Ava[/name_f]'s and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]'s running around. It would “fit in” by style but stand out in sound.

I think it’s great! When I read this I also thought of Haldana and Haldania (meaning half [name_u]Dane[/name_u]). But I also think [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] on her own wouldn’t be so bad.

I actually know a woman in her 20’s named [name_f]Hildie[/name_f].
I don’t know if it’s short for anything but it fits her well and I actually like it.
Sorta like [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] with a kick

[name_f]Hildegard[/name_f] was my first thought.
I’m not wild about [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] but it’s not bad. It’s probably the most simple, streamlined way to get there. Though I think amongst the [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Sadie[/name_f]'s she can stand on her own as well.

Or what about [name_f]Hildred[/name_f] or Reinhild?
There’s also Ishild, an ancient version of [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] according to BTN.

I’ve never met a [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] before, it’s nice to know there are some out there!

Also, if I remember right there was a [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] on a TV show a few years back. One of those home design shows my mom and I used to watch  So it’s not completely unknown.

I actually knew a [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] that went by [name_m]Hill[/name_m] or Hilly to close friends and family. So I think [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] can definitely work as a full name.

That rings a bell for me also. Now I will need to do some searching or it will gnaw at me.

Found it quick. Her name was spelled Hildi, she was on Trading Spaces. She was the one that did really crazy things like glueing flowers all over the walls.

I like [name_f]Hilda[/name_f]. Other options could be [name_f]Hilde[/name_f] or Roshilde:)

I have a [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] born last [name_f]October[/name_f] (K0nrad [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] Le0pold), and I really like [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] for you. [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] or [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f], and I really like the suggestion of Rosehilde. [name_m]Konrad[/name_m] is a major family name for us and so is [name_f]Clothilde[/name_f].

Oh my gosh, another [name_m]Konrad[/name_m]!! You have great taste  [name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce [name_f]Clothilde[/name_f]?

Ooh, I like Roshilde!
