Calla Miette?

We found out today we’re definitely having a girl and couldn’t be more excited  We have struggled with names since day one my fiancee and I seem to have differing opinions. We went back and forth and we just didn’t seem to really agree on anything. Today I called my 94 year old grandmother and told her we were having a girl and told her what names we were looking at. [name]Calla[/name] was on my fiancee’s list and when I mentioned it to her she told me [name]Calla[/name] [name]Lilies[/name] were her favorite flower. I immediately knew then that this was the name I wanted for my daughter not only because it means beautiful, but because it is a good way to honor my grandmother who is the light of my life she is an amazing woman. Miette has always been one of my favorites since I found out I was pregnant but my fiancee wasn’t too keen on it as a first name. I then suggested [name]Calla[/name] Miette and he actually agreed on it. Roughly translated her name would mean “Beautiful sweet little crumb” It’s unique without being too overboard, but I just want some extra opinions I want to get your thoughts on it just to see what the general consensus is. My mom hates it which isn’t surprising

I absolutely love this choice!

[name]Calla[/name] is such a spunky, vibrant name. She’s a great choice conjuring up beautiful images and I also adore the flower associations. [name]Calla[/name] is a brilliant name, I also think the nickname [name]Callie[/name] is great. The family associations are great and tied in so lovingly. Miette is really bright and happy especially with [name]Calla[/name] even though I’m not keen on Miette as a stand-alone-name she’s great with [name]Calla[/name]. [name]Calla[/name] Miette is great.

Sounds good!

[name]Don[/name]'t hate me but for some reason when I said your combo out loud the opera song “O Sole [name]Mio[/name]” popped into my head. Maybe it’s the rhythm and sound of [name]Calla[/name] Miette. I like the combo and “beautiful” and “sweet” are awesome adjectives but I’m more uncertain about whether I would want to be called “a little crumb” for the rest of my life.

I think it’s a gorgeous name! I love Miette.

I love [name]Calla[/name], but not so fussed on Miette. I also think it sounds a bit like Call Me Ette (in a bad Italian accent, at least in my head), but it might just be me. [name]Even[/name] so, it’s hardly awful.

My fiancee jokes that we’ll only call her a little crumb when she’s throwing a hissy fit in the middle of a [name]Wal[/name]-[name]Mart[/name] and neither of us want to claim her as our child

In French miette literally means ‘crumb.’ As in the small bits left over after a loaf of bread has been on a plate. It’s just as name-like as Crumb would be in English (meaning, absurd not at all name-like).

Luckily there are loads of French names which have an identical rhythm to Miette [which admittedly has a pretty sound and cadence]-- [name]Simone[/name], [name]Cecile[/name], [name]Celeste[/name], [name]Yvette[/name], [name]Sandrine[/name], [name]Camille[/name], [name]Babette[/name], [name]Chantal[/name], [name]Christine[/name], [name]Clarisse[/name], [name]Colombe[/name], [name]Corinne[/name], [name]Cosette[/name], [name]Delphine[/name], [name]Elise[/name], [name]Estelle[/name], [name]Felice[/name], [name]Francine[/name], [name]Georgette[/name], [name]Helene[/name], [name]Jacquette[/name], [name]Jeannine[/name], [name]Josette[/name], [name]Justine[/name], [name]Lisette[/name], [name]Lucette[/name], [name]Lucille[/name], [name]Margot[/name], [name]Ninette[/name], [name]Odette[/name], [name]Roxanne[/name], [name]Suzette[/name], [name]Victoire[/name]-- all sound great, and are much more usable (throughout a girl/woman’s life) than Crumb.

I really like it

I think it’s lovely!

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Calla[/name]! It’s a gorgeous name and the personal associations with your grandmother are lovely. I’m sorry, but I’m not as fond of Miette. What about Mielle? It’s sounds similar and means honey. It’s one of my favorite French names and I think [name]Calla[/name] Mielle is very very pretty.

Miette is a little overly precious to me. It turns an elegant and regal [name]Calla[/name] into a princessy affair. But maybe that’s because I live near San [name]Francisco[/name] and there is a sort of famous bakery there called Miette. [name]Calla[/name] Miette feels very cupcakey to me, but maybe that’s because of my regional context. [name]Blade[/name] gave a lot of great French names to consider. [name]Sandrine[/name] is really awesome if you want something unusual.

[name]Calla[/name] is gorgeous, not really a fan of Miette. Especially the meaning… I would want my name to mean crumb. But it’s your choice, overall. I think [name]Odette[/name] or [name]Helene[/name] would sound much much better.

I have to agree with many of the other posters. [name]Calla[/name] is a lovely name, but I don’t really like Miette with it, sorry. I don’t think the two names together have the best sound, and the word in french is just crumb - there are no sweet or beautiful connotations to the word in french.

But again, [name]Calla[/name] is a really beautiful name, and how nice that it will be linked to your grandmother. I think you can find a much more lovely french name to go with it, if that is what you’re looking for!

Yes, this. I live in San [name]Francisco[/name]. I read a lot of food blogs, and the bakery has a lot of fans in the baking world.

I suppose it is a middle name, and no one has to hear it, and yet - I wouldn’t want it as a middle for myself as a grown woman.
