I think I’m in the minority here being a [name]Brit[/name], but in this instance would love the advice of follow Brits …
I currently have a daughter named [name]Emmeline[/name] - its a name that brings me much joy in the fact that we are regularly complimented on it, it’s still pretty unusual in the UK but is a genuine vintage name. (Plus our daughter is a total joy too!!).
However, I’m currently struggling to find an equally pleasing name. I have posted on here several times and one name that keeps coming up is [name]Adelaide[/name]. I like it as its a ‘proper’ name steeped in history and goes well with [name]Emmeline[/name] - but the one thing I can’t shake off is the connection to the Australian city! Are people simply going to think that’s where she was conceived?!?? Is it in the same category as [name]Sydney[/name], [name]Brooklyn[/name], [name]India[/name] or [name]London[/name] (which are really not my style)?
What do my fellow Brits think of this name? It seems quite popular in the USA!
I am not a [name]Brit[/name], but I am from [name]Adelaide[/name] (the city you are talking about.) I don’t think so! I would use it but I can’t unfortunately, haha! I don’t think its too place-namey, I think she can stand on her own. I think of [name]Heidi[/name] and her church name [name]Adelheid[/name]. But yeah I think it is really pretty!
I think [name]Adelaide[/name] is a gorgeous name, and it’s a proper name, I can’t think anyone would think you named her after the city (which was named after [name]Adelaide[/name] of [name]Saxe[/name]-Meiningen). It’s not in the same category as the ones you mention at all.
There were 47 babies named [name]Adelaide[/name] last year, 50 named [name]Emmeline[/name]!
Other suggestions:
[name]Jocelyn[/name], [name]Rosemary[/name], [name]Georgiana[/name], Mariell, [name]Romilly[/name], [name]Paulina[/name] and [name]Miranda[/name].
I think [name]Adelaide[/name] is beautiful, and it sounds great with [name]Emmeline[/name]. I haven’t met anyone with either name in the UK.
While I do think of the Australian city when I hear it I wouldn’t put it in the [name]Brooklyn[/name] bracket at all, it’s definitely a vintage choice in my mind.
With [name]Emmeline[/name], I think of [name]Georgina[/name], [name]Ramona[/name] and [name]Philippa[/name].
[name]Adelaide[/name] is wonderful! Goes so well with [name]Emmeline[/name]!
Other suggestions, [name]Genevieve[/name], Magdelena, [name]Theodora[/name], [name]Rosalind[/name]
[name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Emmeline[/name] are perfect as sisters. [name]Adelaide[/name] is just as vintage as [name]Emmeline[/name] and as [name]Ottilie[/name] said the name came before the city. [name]Sydney[/name] is vintage too from what I can remember.
When I hear/see the name it doesn’t immediately make me think of the place. It was a name long before it was a city, after all, so I don’t think it’s in the same category as the others you mentioned. I adore both [name]Emmeline[/name] and [name]Adelaide[/name], they make a beautiful sibset and compliment each other perfectly.
When I hear the name [name]Adelaide[/name] I just think of a beautifully named little girl and not the Australian city. I honestly don’t think it goes into the category of [name]Paris[/name] or [name]London[/name] at all because it just has a very classic feel. I think that [name]Emmeline[/name] and [name]Adelaide[/name] would make a perfect sibset in my opinion.

When I hear the name I [name]DO[/name] think of the city, but I wouldn’t think that your choice was likely to have any connection with it - it just makes me think of the place thats all! Much like the name [name]Victoria[/name] does - it has a link that I think of, but obviously the name came first!
[name]Adelaide[/name] is a lovely and unusual name, and it goes very well with [name]Emmeline[/name].
