I’m going to look down one more rabbit trail: nature-inspired names that work for an [name_f]October[/name_f] baby.
I thought of it because my husband inquired about “something like [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]” just to get a feel for the style. I think it fits in a nature theme (which most of our other children have, so that’s a plus) though I think [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] itself is a bit unimaginative.
We have [name_f]Opal[/name_f] on the list (the birthstone of [name_f]October[/name_f]) already, so points for us there, right? I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] (flower of [name_f]October[/name_f]), though we are a bit hesitant to use another flower name so soon. We both like [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] too, though more as a middle, and I like [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] better. [name_f]Saffron[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], and [name_f]Nova[/name_f] have been ruled out before.
Besides [name_f]Opal[/name_f], other names currently on the list: [name_f]Constance[/name_f], [name_f]Petra[/name_f], [name_f]Rilla[/name_f], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]/[name_f]Celestia[/name_f], and [name_f]Zaria[/name_f]. The other children are C a s p i a n, Z e p h a n, E v e, P e r e g r i n e (P i p p i n), and D u l c i n e a (D a i s y).
I’m looking for girl names in this thread, but if you think of suggestions for boy names along the way, go ahead and throw them in. I might snag them for the boys middle name list. The baby is measuring for an [name_f]October[/name_f] 17 due date, so an [name_f]October[/name_f] birthday seems very likely.
Once again, thanks for throwing in all your great ideas!
[name_f]October[/name_f] makes me think of the end of foliage season
[name_f]Maple[/name_f]
[name_f]Crimson[/name_f]
[name_f]Amber[/name_f]
[name_f]Rubina[/name_f]
pp’s [name_f]Sienna[/name_f]
also harvest
[name_f]Theresa[/name_f] - if memory serves the meaning has something to do with harvesting
[name_u]Gardener[/name_u]
[name_f]Ayla[/name_f] - Hebrew; “oak tree”
[name_u]Dara[/name_u] - Irish; “oak tree” (all boy to me but can see it working on either)
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] - Cornish; “elm tree”
[name_f]Flavia[/name_f] - Ancient [name_m]Roman[/name_m]; “golden”
[name_u]Linden[/name_u]
[name_f]Melia[/name_f] - Greek; “ash tree”
Nevena - Slavic; “marigold”
Ornella - Italian; “flowering ash tree” (created by [name_m]Gabriele[/name_m] d’[name_m]Annunzio[/name_m] for his novel ‘La Figlia di Jorio’)
[name_f]Philomela[/name_f] - Greek; “lover of fruit”
[name_f]Pomona[/name_f] - Latin; “fruit tree”
And one thought for a boy:
[name_m]Oren[/name_m] - Hebrew; “pine tree”
Good luck! For what it’s worth, I love the names you’re considering and am really enjoying your threads.
[name_f]Fiamma[/name_f] means flame, I believe. [name_u]Flame[/name_u] of the Holy [name_f]Spirit[/name_f], some say, or the bright red of an autumn leaf!
[name_u]Ember[/name_u]
Solvei - this just reminds me of the sun on a cold, northern autumn day for some reason:)
[name_f]Ravenna[/name_f] - this feels autumnal to me, too. Not sure why!
[name_u]Ember[/name_u]
[name_f]Ailish[/name_f]
Pommeline
[name_f]Mercy[/name_f] - the Puritan aspect of this name makes me think autumn, the first thanksgiving, etc…
For what it’s worth: I love marigold, too! And how cool that D’s name in not a flower but her NN is, while m’a name is a flower but her NN could be [name_f]Goldie[/name_f]/[name_f]Golda[/name_f]/[name_f]Mimma[/name_f], etc…something not a flower!!
Thank you for the ideas! It IS more tricky when the “nature” theme is limited to just a season. I especially like:
Nevena (new one to me! cool way to get a flower without really having a flower name)
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] (that one was on the list last time, totally did not re-boot my brain to think of it as a fall-theme possibility)
[name_f]Rubina[/name_f] (super cute!)
And of course I have to callout the O name (Ornella) because I love almost all of them and my husband is so finicky about them. [name_f]Pomona[/name_f] & [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f] are good calls for the season, too. And [name_u]Ember[/name_u], and [name_f]Amber[/name_f], and the colors, okay lots of great ideas here. Thank you!
@morganalefaye - Thanks, glad you are having fun following along! I feel kind of disorganized because I don’t really know what direction I want to go this time, so I keep tracking down different ideas in a way that feels very random. The forums here are awesome though, for finding that one overlooked gem, either the one I’d never seen before, or the one that needs a second glance. BTW when I went to look up Nevena, I found a variant, Nevenka. I am totally keeping that one for the middles list because I have a family name where in the first generation it was [name_u]Niki[/name_u], and for the second generation it was changed to [name_f]Nicole[/name_f]. Last baby, I went round and round and round trying to find a name that resembled that N-K sound pattern and never did find anything that I liked well enough to use. This one definitely has potential!
I love [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] for you. I think it is magical and helps solidify [name_f]Eve[/name_f] in your sibset… kind of bridges the space between beautiful, classic understated [name_f]Eve[/name_f] & some of your more outrageously uncommon choices. Actually, [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] does seem to that perfectly too - like that more as a middle though hm? I prefer [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] anyway because it feels less Princessy.
I’m gonna think of so many names! But not now because it’s LATE here & I better get to bed. <3
Thanks for adding more and more ideas, Berries! I do like [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], but it seems strange since this is our seventh child (counting the angel baby). I looked up the meaning on [name_f]Teresa[/name_f] as well — I’d never realized that it had a “harvest” meaning. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], oh, but we already have mn [name_f]Tesla[/name_f]. I put [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] back on the list; I can’t remember if my husband ever saw that one. I like [name_f]Fern[/name_f].
Lots of really great harvest-theme ideas here. I think I’m maybe more interested in the color and tree names, though… by [name_f]October[/name_f], the only crop still in the fields is miserable, dried-up corn that irritates my allergies.
@truenature - Have fun! Maybe you’ll find something for your OWN list on the way!
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] (seems heavier than most nature names, lending itself more to late summer/autumn than spring)
[name_f]Maple[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_u]Seren[/name_u]
[name_u]Vesper[/name_u]
@seazuno86 - You would make my husband happy. [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], and [name_u]Seren[/name_u] were on his original list! We both like [name_f]Luna[/name_f] but we’re afraid to use it with a T surname (lunatic). [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is too heavy for me. [name_f]Maple[/name_f] has been making an interesting splash of late! Thanks for your ideas.
Loving pp’s suggestions of [name_f]Arista[/name_f] (I’m adding it to my list) & [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], but [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] is too similar to [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] for you
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] really screams [name_f]October[/name_f] to me.
I was about to post the name, [name_u]Sorrel[/name_u], too. It’s the name of a plant as well as the reddish-brown color of a horses coat. I really wanted this to be on our Fall baby list, but my husband didn’t like it. Maybe it will work for you? We actually decided on [name_f]Olive[/name_f] instead…
I actually really love [name_f]October[/name_f] nn [name_u]Toby[/name_u] for a girl. [name_f]October[/name_f] is a great, underused month name. And I fell in love w/[name_u]Toby[/name_u] on a woman in [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] Atwood’s MaddAddam series (the character’s a total bada$$).
Cool new ideas, thanks! Behind the Name says that [name_f]Arista[/name_f] means “ear of corn” in Latin. Ha ha ha ha! NB and BabyNamesPedia say it means “harvest” but nobody can seem to decide whether it’s Greek or Latin!
[name_u]Sorrel[/name_u] isn’t quite my thing, but it’s a great idea to have out for other parents who might be looking for [name_f]October[/name_f] names! I actually think I’d like [name_f]October[/name_f] on a boy better than a girl, now that I think about it. Thanks for keeping the ideas running for me!
At last, something I can help with as a consulting classicist - an “arista” is indeed an ear of corn in Latin… and the Greek (or at least Ancient Greek), ά”ιστα, means “the best”! So good meanings all round.
