I have an [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] & [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] her name. However now that she is walking & running I am constantly yelling ehr name which is quite long. Up to now, everyone (us, friends, family) have used her full name. but I think it is time to go with a nickname. I dislike [name_f]Belle[/name_f]/[name_f]Bella[/name_f]. [name_u]Ara[/name_u] ([name_f]Air[/name_f]-ah) is a natural nickname, but I recently saw the name [name_u]Adair[/name_u] and wondered if we could pull that off as a nickname. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like it more or less than [name_u]Ara[/name_u]? Is it too much of a stretch for a nn?
I first assumed it was prn ah-ruh-bell-uh but if you say air-uh-bell-uh then I think it makes even more sense. I think it’s important even if you don’t plan to call her by a nickname to have one in place so people don’t give her one you don’t like. I say sure, even though I think you’ll have to explain it at first.
I’m planning on calling a [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] “[name_f]Maple[/name_f]” or maybe even another non-M name and I know most people will be confused as it’s not a nickname commonly used for that name. But that’s the great thing, it doesn’t have to be! If she likes [name_u]Adair[/name_u], then try it out and eventually people will get used to it.
I think it’s definitely too much of a stretch. Maybe [name_u]Abby[/name_u]/[name_u]Abbie[/name_u] it’s not typical for [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] but would work much easier than [name_u]Adair[/name_u]…
I don’t think it could. It’s not close at all. [name_u]Ari[/name_u], Bellie, Bells, [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Lala[/name_f]…
It’s a stretch. If you want to nn her [name_u]Adair[/name_u], cool, but I wouldn’t claim it’s at all related to [name_f]Arabella[/name_f].
too me its [name_m]WAY[/name_m] to far of a stretch… [name_u]Adair[/name_u] is a completely different name and not a lot of the same sounds…
If you want to call her [name_u]Adair[/name_u], cool. [name_m]Just[/name_m] don’t call it a nickname for [name_f]Arabella[/name_f].
[name_m]Way[/name_m] too much of a stretch. I mean, you could really use any nn for any name, but that doesn’t mean it naturally stems from the name. My little sister is [name_f]Natalie[/name_f], and I call her [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] sometimes. Is [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] a natural nn for [name_f]Natalie[/name_f]? No, of course not. ([name_f]Natalie[/name_f] -> [name_u]Tallie[/name_u] -> [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] -> [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], so it sort of makes sense, but it’s still a huge stretch and it’s just a cute nn I like–nobody really expects it to be a logical nn for her actual name) And [name_u]Adair[/name_u] for [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] makes about as much sense as [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] for [name_f]Natalie[/name_f], imo. I think [name_u]Ara[/name_u] or [name_u]Ari[/name_u] makes much more sense, if you want to avoid [name_f]Belle[/name_f]/[name_f]Bella[/name_f], and you want a nn that naturally flows from her legal name.
As awesome as [name_u]Adair[/name_u] is, it really doesn’t make a good nn for [name_f]Arabella[/name_f].
If you like it then go for it! I love the name [name_u]Adair[/name_u] (though kinda prefer it on boys), and think it makes a wonderful NN for [name_f]Arabella[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it is a bit of a stretch. Or you could try [name_f]Alair[/name_f], which isn’t as unrelated and is just as beautiful : )
[name_u]Adair[/name_u] makes not much sense as a nickname for [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], I’m afraid.
[name_m]How[/name_m] does that work? Sorry I don’t like unrelated nicknames. [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] has enough nicknames just because [name_u]Adair[/name_u] and [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] start with an A doesn’t mean they work as nicknames for each other.
I think it could work but to me it seems like a lot more work to say then [name_u]Ara[/name_u] or [name_u]Ari[/name_u]. You’re shortening it to make it less of a mouthful so I would go with something simpler.
That makes no sense. If you’re going to stretch then at least chose a name that makes sense
[name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_u]Robbie[/name_u], [name_u]Rawley[/name_u], [name_f]Bea[/name_f]/[name_f]Bee[/name_f]
[name_u]Adair[/name_u] is miles away from [name_f]Arabella[/name_f]. She’ll be called [name_u]Ara[/name_u], [name_f]Bella[/name_f] or [name_f]Ella[/name_f]. [name_u]Adair[/name_u] isn’t a good girl’s name anyway, and it’s a bit of a stretch for boys. If you like [name_u]Adair[/name_u], try naming her [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] and her nickname could be [name_f]Ada[/name_f] or [name_f]Adele[/name_f].
I don’t think they work at all, sorry. I’d go with [name_u]Ara[/name_u] or [name_u]Ari[/name_u]. [name_u]Adair[/name_u] and [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] don’t even have a similar feel to them.
To me it would be like picking any A name that’s shorter than [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] cause the sounds don’t logically work for a nickname.
I’d think someone called both [name_u]Adair[/name_u] and [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] had two names, like one was the middle name. It’s because the main stressed consonants in the two names are different that [name_u]Adair[/name_u] doesn’t work as a nickname for [name_f]Arabella[/name_f].
I like even [name_u]Allie[/name_u], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], rella (not a name but cute regardless), alla, even [name_f]Reba[/name_f] could work as the consonants match the original name.
Doesn’t work at all. When I say [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] and [name_u]Adair[/name_u] only the ‘a’ (like cat) sound at the front is the same. It’s too far removed.
Nicknames that could work:
[name_u]Abby[/name_u]
[name_u]Ari[/name_u]
[name_f]Lala[/name_f]*
[name_f]Lally[/name_f]
*Knew a girl who actually went by [name_f]Lala[/name_f]
Sorry, I really don’t think it works. I knew an [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] that went by [name_u]Ari[/name_u] ([name_f]Air[/name_f]-ee) but I didn’t much care for it.
I agree with pp that [name_u]Abbie[/name_u], while a stretch, is a happy medium. I know an [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] whose dad calls her Abs. Also, [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] work if you don’t like [name_f]Bella[/name_f]. [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is cute too.
