I’m trying to come up with ways to connect some of my favorite names to something meaningful in my family’s life.
[name_m]The[/name_m] meanings I’ve found for [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] says it’s referring to the ancient Caspi/Kaspioi tribe that lived near the [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_f]Sea[/name_f] and that it means white. I have no connections to these people or lands so if I am to use it, the meaning I would give it would be relating to any general body of water but not sure if that’s too much of a stretch? I also know the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] books is popular but the series is not meaningful to me for me to honor or relate to it. I do love the fantasy imagery of adventure and traveling the open sea though
Specifically, I would use it to mean refugees traveling the seas to find a new place to call home. I just feel like it’s cheating to use a random body of water that they never actually sailed through to refer to their travels. I have for a long time dismissed [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] because it felt too tied to [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] and I had no connections to the actual lake but it really is such a lovely name so I’m trying to give it a shot here. Do you think it would work as a stretchy honor or should I skip it and move on?
I could see it being used as a stand in for what you mean/want. I can understand someone wanting a sea or water connection and finding it in [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]. Do I immediately think [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_f]Sea[/name_f]? Sure. But I don’t think the root of it is so far off it makes it unusable for you, especially if it’s a top name.
I think it could work. My first thought when I think of the name is definitely the ocean, but not necessarily the [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_f]Sea[/name_f]. I’m of the belief that any honour can work, even the stretchy ones, if the sentiment is there. I don’t think it’s too tied to [name_f]Narnia[/name_f]. I think it would work just fine.
(Although my go to brother name for [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] is [name_m]Marinell[/name_m], meaning knight of the sea, if you like it, it might work well for your desired meaning.)
Honestly, I get where you’re coming from. While I grew up watching [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] in school, it’s kind of faded into obscurity nowadays. I highly doubt the new generations to come from us will immediately associate [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] to [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] like we would.
That said, I think it’s a cool name. I generally think of the [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_f]Sea[/name_f]. It’s a water name, coastal. It’s cool. Good choice for honoring sea travel or an ocean vibe? I like it.
I think this works as a personal association! I wouldn’t necessarily think of it as stretching the meaning of [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], but rather giving the name your own family meaning. [name_m]The[/name_m] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_f]Sea[/name_f] is already connected to the imagery you love, water, travel, crossing from one place to another, and you’re using that as a symbol for refugees crossing the sea in search of a new home. I actually think that’s more meaningful than forcing a connection to the literal etymology.
Names accumulate personal meanings all the time, and I don’t think you need to have a direct connection to the [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_f]Sea[/name_f] for the imagery to resonate with your family’s story. If the idea of “crossing the waters to find home” feels emotionally significant to you, I’d say that’s a perfectly legitimate reason to use [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]. And honestly, the fact that you’ve thought this much about the symbolism makes it feel much less random than you seem to think!
I think [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] can honor the overall concept of the sea/bodies of water! I would admittedly find it odd to honor a specific other sea using the name [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], but honoring seas in general works perfectly well. I also don’t think you need a specific connection to the [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] sea or its region to use the name.
.
I never actually read or watched anything [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] related, so while I do know there is a [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] in the books, I don’t really have that association myself. However, I know many people are familiar with [name_f]Narnia[/name_f], plus with the new [name_f]Greta[/name_f] Gerwig film adaption coming out, that might increase the association? (although from a quick online search, it seems the book this movie is based on is not one of the ones [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] is in, so maybe not!)
Yes, I just like [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] more so I would rather use him if it makes sense. I do have [name_m]Wendell[/name_m], [name_m]Doran[/name_m], [name_m]Kai[/name_m], [name_f]Kailani[/name_f], [name_f]Kairi[/name_f], [name_f]Ondine[/name_f], [name_f]Viatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Naia[/name_f], [name_f]Nerida[/name_f], [name_f]Coralie[/name_f], [name_f]Aava[/name_f] on my list
[name_f]Narnia[/name_f] means a ton to me, so that’s most of his appeal for me specifically, but I do think in general he has a lovely, adventurous, high-seas sort of vibe. I don’t think you need a tie to it to be able to use it, but as for honoring what you want it to… I think it depends on whether it is close enough of a tie for you! Some very stretchy honors feel so obvious to me, but others don’t work for me at all—it depends on your comfort level, but I 100% think [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] could work!
