Can Evan be a nickname for Everett?

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I like the name [name_u]Everett[/name_u], but I can’t stand the nickname [name_m]Rhett[/name_m] and I’m not in love of Ev. Is [name_u]Evan[/name_u] too far of a stretch?

I know some names that have nicknames that seem to be different, like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] or [name_m]Richard[/name_m] and [name_m]Dick[/name_m].

Yes [name_u]Evan[/name_u] is too much a stretch.

I think it works if he’s always going to go by [name_u]Evan[/name_u]. Saying “my full name is [name_u]Everett[/name_u] but I usually go by Evan” makes sense, like he just prefers [name_u]Evan[/name_u] to his full name. However, if you plan to call him consistently by both [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_u]Evan[/name_u], that seems weird to me. Maybe you would like [name_u]Ever[/name_u] as a nickname? Otherwise I might just use [name_u]Evan[/name_u], or choose a different first and put [name_u]Everett[/name_u] as the middle name.

Doesn’t quite work for me if I’m honest

It’s definitely a stretch, but I think it could work, maybe you could add a middle name that starts with An-(Andrew or Anderson for example)

Well I love making up nicknames. Let’s say [name_u]Everett[/name_u] is definitely Ev but if you don’t like that [name_u]Evan[/name_u] is a nice choice. You can also call him [name_f]Evie[/name_f] (which is more for a girl) or [name_u]Ever[/name_u]. Then there is [name_m]Rhett[/name_m] which I hate. I’ll add here are some unusual so Verie, Evett and Erett. And finally some crazy ones Eviv, [name_u]Everest[/name_u], [name_u]Terry[/name_u] and [name_m]Vito[/name_m].

They feel like completely different names to me. Maybe if you did an N middle name it would make slightly more sense.

I think if I didn’t like the nicknames of a name, I would either use the name without nicknames (doesn’t always work out- case in point my sister named by my mom El!sábeth with the intention of calling her that only for her to be called L!zz!e her whole life instead) or find a name with nicknames you can be okay with. Life is unpredictable, so I think the second route is the way I would go

I mean, I see how you get it, but why? [name_u]Evan[/name_u] doesn’t sound like a nickname, and is such a well established given name on its own. They feel like different names.

I wouldn’t do it because [name_u]Evan[/name_u] is a perfectly legitimate different name and a common nickname for [name_u]Evan[/name_u] is Ev which you don’t care for. I agree with @anon73451839 and maybe choose another name or exclusively call him [name_u]Everett[/name_u], which you really like. [name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe name him [name_u]Evan[/name_u]?
