I am expecting my second son in a few weeks and my husband and I have dramatically different taste in names. We both don’t dislike the name [name_m]Miles[/name_m], which is huge for us! My only concern, despite people being unable to use the plural form, is how it goes with our surname “Watts”. Can I have a first name and last name be one syllable and end in “s”? I would use a longer middle name, such as [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], to offset the short first and last name. Any input would be appreciated - [name_m]Miles[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] Watts? (Our first son’s name is [name_u]Dylan[/name_u]). Thanks!
My first son is named [name_m]Miles[/name_m], so I’m rather biases towards it I suppose. Our last name also ends in “s” and hasn’t been a problem.
I love [name_m]Miles[/name_m]! I do however think there is too much S. What about [name_m]Marcus[/name_m]? Because there’s another syllable it doesn’t sound as bad.
Good luck!
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] xx
I think there are two issues with [name_m]Miles[/name_m] Watts: both names end in -s, and both names are only one syllable (I know you said you’d use a longer middle, but they rarely get used out and about).
However, neither are those things are gigantic problems, so if [name_m]Miles[/name_m] is the one name that you and your husband can agree on, I’d say go for it!
[name_m]Milo[/name_m] Watts would be much better. [name_m]Miles[/name_m] Watts is too abrupt and lispy for my comfort level. [name_m]Milo[/name_m] is the original Latin form of the name (not just a nn for [name_m]Miles[/name_m] as most people believe).
[name_u]Mischa[/name_u]'s suggestion of [name_m]Milo[/name_m] is sweet alternative to [name_m]Miles[/name_m]. Great suggestion and [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] are awesome together.

Yes, I agree with [name_u]Mischa[/name_u] - I love the suggestion of [name_m]Milo[/name_m]!
I don’t think it’s bad at all. It’s not perfection, but if you both love the name I think it works.
Along with too much s sound, the fact that both [name_m]Miles[/name_m] and Watts are units of measure really bothers me. It may not be something his peers notice right away but I’m pretty sure when he’s sitting in a high school physics lesson it will be painfully obvious.
I actually find that really cool! I’d have loved discovering that as a kid.
LOL! just the fact that you picked up on that, lonestar, is awesome! I didn’t notice that before but I agree with kala_way that it’s actually pretty cool. I do however like mischa’s suggestion of Milo or even cassandrah’s of Marcus. I totally feel for you about different styles, you have to find one that reflects you as a person and as a couple and that can be very difficult.
I think the name [name_m]Miles[/name_m] on its own is nice… but I don’t really like the double ‘s’ as it is kinda lispy.
I like the suggestion of [name_m]Milo[/name_m].
I think the unit of measurement point is something that is personal, either you really love it or are biased against it… but that is a personal decision.
I can barely find a boy’s name I like, let alone one my husband is on board with. I feel your pain. So, if you two agreed on this I think that trumps the flow issue, which is a minor one to my ears anyway.
(But yes, [name_m]Milo[/name_m] sounds better)
[name_m]Miles[/name_m] Watts sounds fine to me. It’s not the most perfect flow, but if you both love the name and agree on it, I say use it. It’s not like its terribly difficult to say or sounds weird, its just not ideal. But it works! Go for it!
That’s what I was thinking. Along with the one syllable and double S-ending issue, I too, prefer [name_m]Milo[/name_m]. Good luck! =]
