Can I use this nickname for the name August?

Hello Berries,

Can we use the nickname [name_u]Oak[/name_u] for [name_u]August[/name_u]? Is it too much of a stretch?

Thank you!

Definitely too much of a stretch imo

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] “[name_u]Oak[/name_u]” or [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_u]Oak[/name_u] “[name_u]Oak[/name_u]”.

I think it is a bit out of nowhere seeming. I’d second the above suggestion to have some sort of [name_u]Oak[/name_u] name attached to it if you want that nickname.

You can, but it doesn’t make any sense.

This. I can’t see where the [name_u]August[/name_u]/[name_u]Oak[/name_u] connection comes from at all, and I’m generally all for unusual nicknames. But anyone can technically go by anything, regardless of whether it’s related to their real name or not. And I do know people who go by/have gone by names totally unrelated to their real names, but in that case, why not just name him [name_u]Oak[/name_u]? (For these people they didn’t like their real name or they immigrated and it didn’t work in their new country; their parents didn’t choose a completely unrelated name and nickname. Or there’s a cultural tradition of names and nicknames that are totally unrelated.)

Thank you for your comments!

I love the suggestion! Thank you

I think I see the connection because I pronounce Oh-gust (O like in “so”) and when I say “Og” it sounds like “[name_u]Oak[/name_u]”.
Nobody would know how to pronounce [name_u]Oak[/name_u] where we live

[name_u]August[/name_u] is super handsome - and [name_u]Oak[/name_u] is an adorable nickname!
Why are we so caught up in rules of nicknames? They don’t actually have to make any sense (and I do see the sound connection), it’s just a pet name lovingly used for your child. I think [name_u]Oak[/name_u] is really cool, and if you love it, there’s nothing to hold you back

Now that you explained your pronunciation, I think you could do it. It’s a bit of a stretch but I kinda like it. Especially since I love [name_u]August[/name_u] but ‘[name_u]Gus[/name_u]’ doesn’t sound like a nickname a man would wear.

Thank you @aren! I’m happy that you see the sound connection.

@silkypumpkin: I like [name_u]Gus[/name_u] but it feels too easy, not as personal. I prefer [name_u]Oak[/name_u] and Auggie! Thanks

I agree with southern.maple. I think it would be better if you used a name with “oak”’ in it or with “oak” as a meaning. I might be a stretch but it would make more sense than just calling him [name_u]Oak[/name_u] with no correlation.
