Take 2 because I don’t think the post went through last night.
Me and my husband are expecting our first daughter in a couple of weeks and we are agreeing on no names. I prefer classic, “boring” names (his opinion) like [name_f]Diana[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and he prefers more modern, “trendy” names (my opinion) like [name_u]Lennox[/name_u], [name_f]Nova[/name_f], and [name_f]Sienna[/name_f]. Any ideas?
[name_f]Nora[/name_f] could be the middle ground you’re after… Incredibly similar to [name_f]Nova[/name_f], but a more classic choice.
Another option is to pick a classic name with a fun nickname. For example: [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], nn [name_u]Kit[/name_u]
I think you’ll both probably have to compromise though… maybe scrap both your lists and keep searching for something you’re both ok with for starters and see if you can agree.
Go through the top 1000 individually and write down every name you like, even if it’s just a little, then go through and see which names you both wrote down.
Here are some names I think are classic and trendy:
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f]
[name_f]Mavis[/name_f]
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Alissa[/name_f]/[name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]? It has [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in there but fits in with the trendy theme. Or [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] maybe? I like pp’s suggestion of [name_f]Nora[/name_f] too.
Maybe a less well-used classic name with some on-trend sounds?
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Verona[/name_f]
[name_f]Nina[/name_f]
[name_f]Zora[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Lola[/name_f]
[name_f]Lula[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f]
We had a similar dilemma. In the end I compromised a lot but wish I’d hung out for a more traditional name that he could like. The idea of traditional with a modern feel or cute modern nickname - like the suggestion of [name_f]Katharine[/name_f]/[name_u]Kit[/name_u].
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Juno[/name_f]? Sounds like [name_u]June[/name_u] but more edgy and updated.
If not [name_f]Nova[/name_f], [name_f]Nola[/name_f] maybe?
Thanks for all the suggestions! We went through the lists and the top 200 and the names that we both like are: [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], [name_f]Layla[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]/[name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f]/[name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_f]Melody[/name_f], [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]/[name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]/[name_f]Callie[/name_f].
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you guys think that there are some we should cut right now? Which ones do you think sound the best?
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]/[name_f]Callie[/name_f] is cute! I don’t hear [name_f]Callie[/name_f] mentioned very often and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is a beautiful classic. The only one I would cut is [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] (too popular in the US especially when you add in [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]). I was actually going to suggest [name_f]Stella[/name_f] before I saw your update. It’s trendy but vintage so seems like a good compromise.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] for you. [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] came to mind too
That is a nice list. The only ones I may cut, and this is based solely on nicknames that I consider soooo common, are [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] because they are likely to become [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] or [name_u]Abbie[/name_u]. That is just me though and it may depend on where you live. My favourites are [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]/[name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]/[name_f]Callie[/name_f], and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f].
I would suggest vintage but sort of offbeat and short:
[name_m]How[/name_m] about?
[name_f]Saga[/name_f]
[name_u]Dacey[/name_u]
[name_f]Hildy[/name_f]
[name_u]Alix[/name_u]
[name_f]Clarice[/name_f]
[name_m]Ah[/name_m] it’s so tricky when you can’t agree on any names!
I think ultimately your going to both have to compromise I would get rid of both your lists and start from scratch. Maybe go with unusual classics which would be a good balance with his trendy choices and your traditional choices. A name with a lot of history but has a similar vibe to [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] or [name_f]Nova[/name_f].
Suggestions:
[name_f]Faye[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_f]Valentina[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Christabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Farah[/name_f]
[name_f]Leonora[/name_f]
[name_f]Delphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Maya[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Lara[/name_f]
[name_f]Evelina[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
From your new list, I think [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] bridge the gap between classic and a little bit cool and edgy perfectly.
I also love the classic full name, trendier nickname combo you’d get with [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]/[name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]/[name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]/[name_f]Callie[/name_f] (maybe also [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f]/[name_f]Bella[/name_f]?) — that strikes me as a great way to compromise.
