My partner and I both love the same 2 names for our baby boy, but can’t decide on which one to choose. The middle name is decided so we really need to pick one of the two.
Any thoughts between [name_m]Silas[/name_m] and [name_m]Tavish[/name_m]?
So far majority vote is for [name_m]Silas[/name_m]. Is that because [name_m]Silas[/name_m] is more popular right now or because [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] is just awful!?
I think both names are fine. [name_m]Silas[/name_m] is just more familiar. Does the middle name sound better with one vs the other?
I have a cousin named [name_m]Tavish[/name_m], and I think it is a perfectly good name. However I do like [name_m]Silas[/name_m] better, personally there’s something about the long ‘I’ sound that appeals to me
Thanks for the input! We like the middle name with both just the same, so it doesn’t make it any easier.
I prefer [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] - just the sounds and its unusualness.
I dislike [name_m]Tavish[/name_m]. It reminds me of the word “lavish,” which brings to mind spoiled brats
I like [name_m]McTavish[/name_m] rather than [name_m]Tavish[/name_m]. don’t know why, and I am not usually a Mc… name fan.
I like [name_m]Silas[/name_m] better because it’s enjoyable to say and evokes style and cheekiness, but if I’d known a [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] and said it maybe I’d like it as much.
I really like both. [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] is not nearly as well known, I’ve mentioned it to people before because I love it and none that I mentioned it to were enthused about it… but I really think it’s because of it’s unfamiliarity. So, with [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] people may take a bit to warm up to his name. But, no, I don’t think it’ll be looked at as awful. [name_m]Silas[/name_m] is probably a safer choice if you worry about him explaining his name his whole life. But I think I prefer [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] by just a bit. [name_m]Silas[/name_m] is still lovely.
I love the name of [name_m]Silas[/name_m]. [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] is not my thing.
Honestly, I prefer [name_m]Silas[/name_m]. I am not a big fan of either, though [name_m]Silas[/name_m] is okay. I think [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] just sounds a little… strange. To me, [name_m]Silas[/name_m] just sounds nicer and cuter.
I think the best way to decide would be to consider nicknames. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer [name_u]Si[/name_u] or [name_m]Tav[/name_m]?
I feel like they have similar sounds, but I prefer the meaning of the name [name_m]Silas[/name_m], not sure if that is a factor for you.
I really like both (and agree that [name_m]Silas[/name_m] has a particularly appealing meaning), but [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] definitely wins for me! Such a striking, interesting, warm-sounding name.
Would you pronounce it “[name_u]TAY[/name_u]-vish” (to rhyme with [name_m]Hamish[/name_m]) or “[name_m]TAV[/name_m]-ish” (to rhyme with radish)? I personally prefer the first way, but I suspect that most people would assume the latter — especially if they’d never encountered the name before, which is a distinct possibility. Mispronunciation and misspelling seems far less likely with [name_m]Silas[/name_m], so it might be worth thinking seriously about how much that might bother you.
I agree with quirkflower that it will possibly come down to nn. I love [name_m]Silas[/name_m] as a full name but not too keen on ‘[name_u]Si[/name_u]’. [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] would probably get ‘[name_m]Tav[/name_m]’ or ‘[name_u]Tavi[/name_u]’ so you would need to like those. Both names are a little different and I can see why it’s a hard choice’. [name_m]Silas[/name_m] wins out for me… just.
I prefer [name_m]Silas[/name_m] just because i’m not big on names that end in the SH sound.
I much prefer [name_m]Silas[/name_m] to [name_m]Tavish[/name_m], but that’s personal preference. They’re both perfectly fine names.
[name_m]Silas[/name_m] is so handsome! I’d go for it.
[name_m]Silas[/name_m] doesn’t appeal to my personal naming tastes - it just strikes me as wishy-washy, probably from all the soft sounds. But I know those are attributes other parents like in a boys’ name.
[name_m]Tavish[/name_m] is unexpectedly cool - [name_m]Tav[/name_m] and [name_u]Tavi[/name_u] are great nicknames. Good luck!
Both are handsome names, I just love [name_m]Silas[/name_m] so much, so I’d choose [name_m]Silas[/name_m]
