Can these Scandies work?

I really love [name_f]Solveig[/name_f]. A lot of people would probably say it wrong (as with the others, except for [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f]), but as previous posters have mentioned, it’s not hard to say when you know how, so anyone who knew you/your daughter wouldn’t necessarily have any issues. I think you should go with the one you love - a simple instruction on how it’s said would be all that’s needed. If you’re very concerned about doing that, or your daughter having to do that, maybe go with [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f]. I’ve had friends on both sides of this equation - one who loves her unusual name and doesn’t mind at all saying how it’s pronounced when she meets people (Bhavani - Bah-VAH-ni), and another who likes her name but finds it very annoying correcting people ([name_f]Jennett[/name_f] - [name_f]JENN[/name_f]-et).

@dearest Thanks for the link and adding in pronunciations! Having a little Scandi heritage (Swedish, Danish) I’m always interested, and I actually love your name Åshild, I think I saw a tennis player or something with the name once and noticed it!

You’re welcome ^^

Thanks! I’ve grown to love my name as well, but I wanted to change it for years. It’s fairly dated here, peaked in the 40’s and most of the -hild names were out of fashion for my age-group. I wanted something frilly and international  I was named after both my grandmothers though (Ås- from one, -hild from the other), so that’s mainly what made me settle with it.

As an English-speaking American, I think the names you listed are easiest to pronounce in this order: [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f], Ingvild, Audhild, [name_f]Solveig[/name_f]. I’m not 100% certain on how to pronounce any of them, but I could guess fairly accurately on some. I wouldn’t recommend [name_f]Solveig[/name_f], even though I’m guessing it’s pretty, because I think you could run into a lot of pronunciation issues with it. The vowel sounds on Audhild could also give you some issues when non-Norwegians try to pronounce it.
