I pronounced her name like ah-loo-hee-lah-nee when I first said it, without silencing the h’s or anything, which I feel like many people will. There may be some prn. issues along the way, based on where you live, but this name is so pretty and reflects your heritage; I think you should use it
Hawaiian names are gorgeous! While this name is no different, I do feel it would be difficult to pronounce in the US.
I say it like " ah-low-he-lah-nee
It’s beautiful and meaningful, which is a solid gold yes in my books.
Congratulations!
That is a beautiful name!! I didn’t have the slightest issue pronouncing it. I love that it’s unconventional (where I come from) and it’s still completely easy to say. Honestly it’s gorgeous. I read it as “ah-LO-ha-LA-nee” (like “aloha” plus “lahnee”). Also the meaning is beautiful.
Congrats on being in a new happy, healthy relationship! Wishing you so much happiness
Thank u so much for the replies! We decided against one of our favorites [name_m]Hi[/name_m]'ilei because of mainland prn issues. It seems Alohilani will have less issues. Thank u everyone
I think the pronunciation of Alohilani is fairly intuitive. For me it was at least, but I have had exposure to a few different languages and cultures besides my own so that may help. I think the main part I/people might get wrong is the Aloh-I-lani, I said the ‘i’ with a short sound the first time, as in the word lid. I do not think that’s a big deal tho, and I think it is a most beautiful name! It sounds meaningful and happy, congratulations on your third baby girl! All the best.
I found this easy to pronounce (maybe spelling will be a much more difficult issue for her unless you live in [name_m]Hawaii[/name_m]?) and I actually think the order of the middle names that you chose is very pretty! Congratulations.
What a wonderful name! I pronounced it as you want it to be first time, but it was a bit overwhelming to look at before I knew the pronunciation. I would say the pronunciation is intuitive.
Hello! I think her name seems perfect. I pronounced it with a short ‘‘i’’ at first because of my dialect (… probably couldn’t be further away from [name_m]Hawaii[/name_m] geographically haha) but I don’t think this would be a problem. Your personal reasons for using a Hawaiian name in the front are way more powerful than any minor pn issues or bad reactions about breaking the pattern established with/by a previous partner.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] re- some of the negative comments you’ve had, I think they says more about this website than your children’s names. Many people on here spend their time on here creatively, producing the perfect sets of names, following patterns and rules, categorising, precisely listing or rearranging etc. etc.
I suspect that any criticism you’ve had was because of this mindset - comments are made passingly, so I guess some people have been insensitive to the fact these are your real children, you’re a real mother looking for a name. It’s easy to say ‘‘but it makes more sense to use an American first name’’ without knowing the context, just because the same kinda thing is done all the time on here hypothetically. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you see what I mean? I hope it made sense.
Anyway. Congratulations, Alohilani has a gorgeous name! Good luck to you and your family x
It’s a pretty straightforward pronunciation and it’s a gorgeous name, with an even more gorgeous meaning and story! Congratulations on your new, healthy relationship!
