Not “unisex names”, but names that were originally only boy, and now only girl. Like [name]Ashley[/name], [name]Lindsey[/name], [name]Madison[/name]… What else can you think of?
[name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Samantha[/name], [name]Meredith[/name]
[name]Avery[/name] maybe?
[name]Morgan[/name]?
[name]Kelly[/name]?
I’ve been finding these fascinating. I even heard [name]Scarlett[/name] was at one point a boy’s name?
Traditional - [name]Leslie[/name], [name]Vivian[/name], [name]Hilary[/name], [name]Robin[/name]
French - [name]Patrice[/name] (still a man’s name in [name]France[/name])
Names making the move - [name]HUnter[/name] (as seen on “The Sopranos”), [name]Emerson[/name], [name]Elliott[/name] (as seen on “Scrubs”)
My great-grandpa’s name was [name]Ruby[/name]!
Also, [name]Shannon[/name].
And I know a man who has the same first name as me, [name]Kim[/name].
[name]Tracy[/name]/[name]Stacy[/name], [name]Teri[/name]/[name]Carrie[/name], [name]Alexis[/name], [name]Mallory[/name], [name]Meredith[/name], [name]Shelby[/name], [name]Whitney[/name] & [name]Lynn[/name]
[name]Courtney[/name].
Some of these are really interesting! [name]Vivian[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Hilary[/name], [name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Samantha[/name]??? Wow!
Some of these haven’t really gone completely to the girls though.
Someone even posted a baby boy announcement for [name]Evelyn[/name] earlier this year - admittedly they are rare, but isn’t this reinforcing the idea that names like [name]Ashley[/name], [name]Robin[/name] (really) etc aren’t usable for boys?
[name]Glen[/name] was my great-grandfathers name and the site lists it as a more attractive female option, because of [name]Glenn[/name] Close. Luckily it hasn’t taken off for girls yet, since I view it as a completely guy name.
I agree with cka, I know a male [name]Robin[/name] and a male [name]Glen[/name] and I can still see them as unisex names.
I think the future is leaning toward the male name landscape becoming more flexible in the same way the female landscape has.
There are definitely some I have a hard time seeing one way or the other but I respect people who try to push boundaries, even if it isn’t too my taste.
And one of my favorite authors, [name]Evelyn[/name] Waugh–a man!
Can’t imagine a male [name]Ruby[/name], and [name]Vivienne[/name]!? Wow is all I can say!
I feel like one male use doesn’t mean it used to be a boys’ name that went girl.
[name]Male[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] was probably because [name]Ruby[/name] was a popular girls’ name that generation (like it’s becoming again), and the parents just decided to put it on a boy. That happened sometimes with [name]Pearl[/name] too.
[name]Vivian[/name] did used to be male and maybe when it was more popular someone just decided to spell it [name]Vivienne[/name]? That’s definitely a feminine spelling though.
I really do not think [name]Samantha[/name] ever used to be a boys’ name - what evidence is the poster using?
The only male [name]Ruby[/name] I’ve heard of is the Irish jockey [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Walsh[/name], and even that’s a nickname for [name]Rupert[/name] (I think, anyway). Given how popular [name]Ruby[/name] is for girls in the UK now though I can’t see it ever going male again.
Also [name]Ashley[/name] and [name]Morgan[/name] are still used for boys quite a bit this side of the pond. Also [name]Taylor[/name], which I understand is leaning female in [name]America[/name].
[name]Robin[/name] for boys and [name]Robyn[/name] for girls is how I’ve always seen the name.
[name]Rhys[/name],or rather well [name]Reese[/name]/[name]Reece[/name] and [name]Bryn[/name], from what I can tell from these forums. Still strictly boys names in the UK though.
In one of my favourite films called ‘The Fifth Element’ there’s a very flamboyant male radio personality named [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Red[/name]. I kind of like [name]Ruby[/name] for a boy. It’s not very different from [name]Rudy[/name] or [name]Toby[/name] so stylistically, it wouldn’t be too hard. The problem is that it’s SO popular for girls!
The Norwgian name for [name]Ruby[/name] is [name]Rubin[/name] which I guess would be more wearable for a boy
Has [name]Rowan[/name] been mentioned yet? [name]Phoenix[/name]? [name]Emerson[/name], [name]Mackenzie[/name]? [name]Adair[/name], [name]Clancy[/name], [name]Micah[/name]? [name]Nico[/name], [name]Quincy[/name], [name]Valentine[/name]? They’re not really all going girl yet, but I would not be surprised at all if in the future they were seen as to girly for boys.
[name]Rory[/name]!
The ones I can think of are:
[name]Addison[/name], [name]Bradley[/name], [name]Brayden[/name], [name]Caden[/name], [name]Cody[/name], [name]Dylan[/name], [name]Emerson[/name], [name]Errol[/name], [name]Hayden[/name], [name]Jaden[/name]/[name]Jayden[/name], [name]Madison[/name], [name]Martin[/name], [name]Neal[/name]/[name]Neil[/name], [name]Percy[/name], [name]Perry[/name], [name]Quincy[/name], [name]Rory[/name], [name]Valentine[/name], [name]Vincent[/name]
I’m sure some were mentioned before but I figured doubling up was better than missing one.
Haha, I laughed when I saw [name]Shannon[/name] and [name]Kim[/name] in the same post. I don’t see [name]Shannon[/name] as a girl’s name in the slightest as I’ve known [name]WAY[/name] more male Shannons than females. It could also be because my boyfriend is really masculine. But anyway, I laughed because his name is [name]Shannon[/name] and his grandpa’s name is [name]Kim[/name]. I mean, I thought that was strange as it’s my sister’s name.
Well, I forgot to add my actual post. Forgive me if it’s a repeat.
My favorite boy names that have gone to girls are [name]Harper[/name] and [name]Addison[/name]. I LOVED those names for boys, but everyone told me “they’re girl names now!” I was so agitated.
[name]Cameron[/name] isn’t quite there yet, but I know it’s making the move, especially [name]Camryn[/name].
