… that isn’t [name]Matilda[/name] or [name]Ottilie[/name]–or their variants?
I adore [name]Tilly[/name] but can’t really imagine using it on its own, and I’ve never been a huge proponent of [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Ottilie[/name]. I like them but can’t imagine using them, and I don’t think either particularly meshes well with my other favorites. I had thought about using something like [name]Tess[/name] [name]Lilibet[/name] or [name]Tallulah[/name] [name]Lily[/name], but I’d rather she just go by her FN with the nn [name]Tilly[/name], if that makes sense.
I would use NB’s supersearch for the -til and -thil letter strings. 40 something names come up. Some I think are more wearable than most (although you might disagree : D) include
[name]Clothilde[/name] / [name]Clotilde[/name] / [name]Clotilda[/name]?
[name]Ethille[/name] (though I think this is meant to sound a lot like [name]Ethel[/name])
[name]Tilda[/name] (itself technically a [name]Matilda[/name] derivative, though, if you care)
I can also sort of see it for [name]Tennille[/name]…
[name]How[/name] about [name]Elizabeth[/name]? [name]Lily[/name] can be used as a nickname for [name]Elizabeth[/name] so I don’t see why [name]Tilly[/name] wouldn’t work as well.
Thanks for the suggestions! I do like [name]Clothilde[/name]/[name]Clotilda[/name] better than [name]Matilda[/name], but I like [name]Clodagh[/name] more than those.
I did do a search (not sure if it was a supersearch, but 44 options came up, so I’m guessing that’s it), and the only one that really appealed to me was [name]Chantilly[/name]. I think it has such a pretty sound and look, but I really don’t think it should be used, for obvious reasons.
Maybe I should just give up the idea of [name]Tilly[/name].
Well, hmm. I thought you might have done it but wanted to be sure : D. I feel the same way about [name]Chantilly[/name]! I think [name]Clothilde[/name] is really elegant. I do think the pp’s [name]Tilly[/name]/[name]Elizabeth[/name] suggestion could work. Especially something like [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Clothilde[/name]?
[name]Natalie[/name] is actually a bit inspired… but my sister is [name]Natalie[/name]. So any -tal- names are definitely out. I call her [name]Tallie[/name], too, so now that I think of it, Aunt [name]Tallie[/name] and [name]Tilly[/name] might be a bit too close.
I do like the suggestion of [name]Elizabeth[/name] nn [name]Tilly[/name], though! I have never really thought I would use [name]Elizabeth[/name]–I like so many of it’s other forms more (especially [name]Isabelle[/name] and [name]Lillian[/name]), but I do love [name]Elizabeth[/name], too, and have had a soft spot for [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Sophie[/name] for a while. If I used [name]Elizabeth[/name], though, I would be so tempted to use [name]Ella[/name], [name]Libby[/name], or [name]Eliza[/name] as a nn, too. Is [name]Elizabeth[/name] too classic next to [name]Isabelle[/name], [name]Arianne[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Liliana[/name], [name]Rachel[/name], [name]Daphne[/name], etc.?
I think [name]Tallulah[/name] could work on its own without the [name]Lily[/name] attached. What about [name]Bristol[/name]? I think [name]Bristol[/name] NN [name]Tilly[/name] would be stunning! My suggestion would have been [name]Natalie[/name] but I know that is your sisters name so that it is out of the question lol. I don’t think [name]Elizabeth[/name] is too classic but it does seem a little to close to [name]Isabelle[/name] since they are very similar variants of each other.
I know a 10 year old [name]Tilly[/name] who has it as a stand-alone name and she’s said her classmates ask her if it’s short for [name]Matilda[/name]. So I think the presumption is that [name]Tilly[/name] is a nickname, and you’d be right in looking for something longer to shorten it down to.
