Cant wait to see the responses to this name-

Im new to the boards, and posted the same question under a different thread. forgive me…not sure how this all works yet!

Anyways, my significant other is insistent that we name our first son [name]Robert[/name] [name]Junior[/name], and he would likely be called [name]Robby[/name] [name]Jr[/name], RJ (dont like either), or (his idea-) [name]Deuce[/name]. Weve discussed it for about 3 years now, and im really starting to love the idea, I just dont know what the rest of the world will think (not that thats the most important thing, but i dont want other kids, or adults for that matter, constantly making fun “taking a deuce…ect”) [name]Robby[/name] and I are both kinda jokesters but def dont want to or mean to make a mockery of our child…what do you think?

Despite the negative connotation, I just don’t like the sound of [name]Deuce[/name]. It could be just a familial nickname- like my dad and I call my brother [name]Buddy[/name] all the time, but no one else does, and we don’t usually say it in public.

do not like at all…it will be made a mockery for sure

No I think it would be a good idea to think of another good nickname. I just love [name]Robbie[/name]/[name]Robby[/name] I think it is a great nn.

Nay, sorry. I do like [name]Robert[/name] or [name]Robby[/name] and [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Robin[/name] as a nn for [name]Robert[/name].

Your question struck a chord with me as I have personal experience with one of the names. My husband and I had a dog named “[name]Deuce[/name]” … there were never any “taking a [name]Deuce[/name]” jokes made (not that I heard or remembered anyway) but there were quite a few times that people asked us in shock to clarify if we had in fact named the dog “Douche”. Oh goodness I don’t even like writing it, I’m sorry :frowning: … but I had to share our experience with the name. Something for consideration.

Yikes, I immediately thought of what you were concerned about. I definitely wouldn’t go there myself… There are lots of great nicknames for [name]Robert[/name] besides [name]Robby[/name], though: [name]Rob[/name], [name]Bob[/name] and [name]Bobby[/name], [name]Robin[/name], [name]Bo[/name]/[name]Beau[/name], [name]Bert[/name] and [name]Bertie[/name], [name]Bird[/name]. Maybe [name]Jay[/name], J.R., or even [name]June[/name] (I know it’s a feminine name, but I just read a fabulous book with a male character names [name]June[/name]…) for [name]Junior[/name]? Or maybe Dew or [name]Dewey[/name] instead of [name]Deuce[/name]?

[name]Deuce[/name] Biggolo, [name]Male[/name] Gigolo. The kids would go crazy with the teasing.

Yes, I usually don’t worry too much about teasing, because I think kids could tease ANY name… but that seems to be almost asking for it :frowning: As someone else mentioned, you could make it a family nn without having him be called [name]Deuce[/name] in school, etc.
I have a brother who went by [name]Robby[/name], now [name]Robert[/name]

I too think it’s a bad idea. [name]Robby[/name] is a great nn, and I know a [name]Robert[/name] who is a [name]Robin[/name] and he has no problems on the playground. Also, there’s the Scottish nn [name]Rabbie[/name], which I think is really terrific.

Please avoid the nickname [name]Deuce[/name].

This comment had me in tears laughing! I have no idea why it struck me as so funny.

[name]Don[/name]'t like it.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and disagree. [name]Deuce[/name] is nms but I do think it works as a nn. Kids are going to have no idea who deuce bigalo is. My teenage niece is infatuated with this name at the moment and didn’t even know it meant two. There is a Disney channel character named deuce on shake it up Chicago and the name of a popular band’s founding member. So I really think it could work today in a way it couldn’t have worked ten years ago.

I’d just stick with [name]Rob[/name] or [name]Robbie[/name] as nicknames for [name]Robert[/name]. [name]Deuce[/name] may inspire teasing, but also I don’t like the way it sounds.

I defiantly would avoid [name]Deuce[/name]. Maybe find another name you can agree on? I’m not a fan of the naming your kid after yourself thing…

Poor you! I don’t like the idea of naming a baby after a parent (at least not first name) and [name]Junior[/name] is tacky and unoriginal too. [name]Bertie[/name] is my fave of the abbreviations for [name]Robert[/name], which is a fine name, but why [name]Deuce[/name]? [name]How[/name] did that suddenly appear? Plus, it also clearly means something different in the US, as I only know it as a tennis score. Je ne comprend pas!

PS Having said all that, if you’re happy with [name]Robby[/name] [name]Jr[/name], go with it. Everyone’s tastes and ‘rules’ on names are different. To-[name]Deuce[/name] or not to-[name]Deuce[/name]? Family nickname sounds safer.

Agree with the other posters about [name]Deuce[/name]. What about Duo instead? This was the name of a character on a 90’s cartoon show from Japan, but other than that I see no reason why it wouldn’t be a half-decent nickname.

Personally, if I was someone’s junior I’d want a nickname from my original name or something special about me, not a name that implied that I was “number two”. I think [name]Rob[/name] or [name]Robin[/name] is a great nickname for [name]Robert[/name].

I don’t like [name]Robert[/name], NMS. [name]IMO[/name],[name]Robert[/name] [name]Junior[/name] sounds really silly, sorry! Why not try another name with the same meaning?
