What do you think of [name_u]Caro[/name_u] for a girl?
Would everyone always assume it was short for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]? Is that even a problem?
I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Like the syrup that makes you poop?
Sorry i have a bad childhood memory or Caro Syrup. My gram would give it to us if we were constipated
I was so excited to see this! [name_u]Caro[/name_u] is one of my favorite names. Unfortunately it feels very “nickname” to me, and I would personally only use it as a [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] nickname, but that’s more a remark on my style than its usability. I would love to see [name_u]Caro[/name_u] used!
I didn’t think of it as being a nickname for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], actually. It’s cute, I like it!
I think [name_u]Caro[/name_u] is an interesting name but to me it does feel more like a quirky nickname for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] than a full name.
What a surprise! Never thought I’d see anyone talking about [name_u]Caro[/name_u] (my name)! I’ve never met another [name_u]Caro[/name_u] and I think it’s quite a cool and badass name if I say so myself. Some people do ask me if it’s short for anything, usually [name_f]Carol[/name_f] or [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and are often pleasantly surprised that it’s just [name_u]Caro[/name_u]. I came to learn that my parents also considered [name_f]Vera[/name_f], another excellent name and fairly on-trend with [name_u]Caro[/name_u]'s style period, but chose [name_u]Caro[/name_u] in the end because it had a lot more “star” factor. My mother’s dream was that I become a famous star… Poor lady!
I think [name_u]Caro[/name_u] is a brilliant name and would love to meet little girls with this name, there’s a lot of frilly and ultra-feminine on the rise and I think a strong, short name like [name_u]Caro[/name_u] really stands out. Oh, and the only downside I can think of is people trying to nickname me [name_f]Carrie[/name_f]!
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is a common name where I live, but I never hear [name_u]Caro[/name_u] as a nickname. Probably wouldn’t make that connection myself.
@wilkie8709 Oh no! I’ve never heard of that, so I googled and found it’s spelt Karo — still too close?
@thomasina [name_u]Lucky[/name_u] you! My own name is pretty boring; I’d love to be called [name_u]Caro[/name_u]. And I’m glad to hear that you’ve had such a positive experience with it
I really like [name_u]Caro[/name_u]! It reminds me of [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] , so I think it could stand alone!
I did think of the syrup also, but I at least didn’t know it was used to relieve constipation! I just remember my mom using it in baking when I was a child.
I don’t think the syrup is a terrible connection, although probably somewhat less than desirable. However, I think you could get past that, and even more so if the brand doesn’t even exist in [name_f]England[/name_f]! I don’t see any reason to eliminate a name because of an association in a country/culture/language that you don’t have any strong connection to.
I have a personal association so i wouldn’t use it either way. But association aside there are far more terrible choices. As a stand alone i think Unusual without being over the top
I coule [name_u]Caro[/name_u] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] or [name_u]Caro[/name_u] [name_f]Olympia[/name_f]. I feel like It needs a mega fem/frilly middle name
@wilkie I do like [name_u]Caro[/name_u] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]! Very pretty, but a little bit badass too
I love it and as for it being a problem … I was born [name_u]Chris[/name_u], just plain [name_u]Chris[/name_u] and all my early life people asked if it was short for [name_f]Christine[/name_f]. But it’s not. I was named after my mother’s grandfather. So even if she does get asked about it … it’s really no big deal.
I’m generally not an enthusiast of diminutives as full names, but I think [name_u]Caro[/name_u] is just as usable as all the nicknames that are popular at the moment. My problem with it is the pronunciation - does it rhyme with “arrow”, or is it pronounced “car-row”, as in the vehicle?
@kew Hmm, a good question… I say [name_u]Caro[/name_u] to rhyme with “arrow”, but then I do pronounce my As short in words like “bath” and “grass” — I don’t know if that makes a difference? I like the sound of “CAR-o” too, but that feels a bit forced coming from my mouth! [name_m]How[/name_m] would you intuitively say it, out of interest?
Ok, I see! I was torn between the two options, since just from the look of it I would pronounce it with a long A sound, as I would names like [name_f]Amparo[/name_f] and [name_m]Lazaro[/name_m] (and words like grass and bath). However, rhyming it with “arrow” also made sense to me to match the pronunciation of [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. In either case it’s a lovely, spunky, easygoing name.
Interesting! I would intuitively say “AM-parro” (but you’re right with the 2nd syllable stress, it turns out!) and “LAZ-arro”.
This reminds me of that pronunciation thread where people recorded themselves reading out a list of common NB names and I realised that we’ve all been debating completely different-sounding names! Fascinating
Isn’t there corn syrup called this or Carro?
I like Caroline nn Caro though for sure (really wants to autocorrect to other things though)
But I should mention I think it’s nice on its own too and wouldn’t worry about the syrup thi ng… Which is not clear at all from my previous comment. I’ve never heard of this as a name or nn… I think it works
