Our son is Lucas. Our daughter is Caroline. We are expecting another baby girl this Fall. My husband loves the name Madeleine (wants to call her Maddy)….even though they are pronounced differently, I’m struggling with Caroline and Madeleine being so similar. I would consider spelling Madelyn but it’s not my favorite version. Thoughts?
how are you pronouncing [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]? If you are using the -line pronunciation for both [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] then i would say they are too similar. Maybe you’d like [name_u]Madison[/name_u] or [name_f]Madelief[/name_f].
Traditional pronunciation: car-o-LINE and mad-a-LYNN.
I don’t think they’re too close
I know sisters [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], pronounced the way you say [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], and they haven’t had an issue! I think it’s fine!
This is tough! I personally would spell it [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] ( even though it’s not my favourite spelling) to avoid any confusion with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
I don’t think too close and I would keep the traditional spelling you have - including because you have the [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] spelling which is different (and I prefer) to [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]. I don’t think you should use [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] because most of your daughter’s own life she won’t be writing down her name and then writing her sister’s next to it where people might be slightly confused. In other words, there won’t be many occasions where people will read the names together. Most of the time, she’ll be introducing herself (or you will as parents) on her own terms, or you will be saying ‘this is CaroLINE’ and this is ‘MadeLYN’ (Madeleine). Then as she goes off into the word, she will have a name you love, rather than one you chose just in case someone messed it up with her sister’s. I love the name [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]!
That’s what my husband thinks too! Thanks!
I love both [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], and I think they make wonderful sister names! They have the same style but they’re certainly not too close imo. [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], & [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] is a lovely sib set!
I don’t find them similar whatsoever, if I’m honest. Despite the shared -ine, the pronunciations are completely seperate in my mind. I wouldn’t bat an eye at seeing them together in a sibset.
It’s fine!
Congratulations
I don’t think they’re too similar the way you’re pronouncing [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], and I’d use your favoured spelling.
I think it’s fine but if it’s bothering you, I’d consider something else? Maybe [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] ‘Maddy’, [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] ‘Maddy’, [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] ‘Maddy’, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] ‘Maddy’?
Personally I’d consider them too close even though they don’t rhyme. If the nickname [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] is what’s important, I’d pick something else. @Greyblue’s suggestions are great! How about [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] ‘Maddy’ or [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] ‘Maddy’?
To me they are somehow close. What about [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f]?
I think its fine
I know sisters [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] (pronounced Madelyn) and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and not once has anyone ever said they’re too close. It’s never been an issue and never even crossed my mind. I think it’s totally fine and they pair nicely together.
@Lmr323232 I LOVE this sibling set so much!! I also prefer your spelling favorite spelling and pronunciation. I don’t think the similarities between the girls’ names are a problem at all. I love that [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] all have an l and an a! I think that ties them together so beautifully without being too similar. I can see where it might be confusing for your girls if you also pronounced [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] with the -line ending instead of the -lyn one. Please don’t let the the similarities talk you out of using a BEAUTIFUL name!! I bet it will make your older daughter feel special when she realizes that her little sister’s name has the same ending as hers! And I don’t think your son will feel left out because the shared letters in their names tie them all together! [name_m]Just[/name_m] some observations. Congratulations and good luck, I hope this helps!
