What do we think of the name [name_m]Caroll[/name_m] for a boy? It’s one that’s been on my mind recently and I’m finding myself liking it. [name_f]Carol[/name_f] on a girl is not a name I normally like, but the vibes on a boy feel a bit different, especially with the double L spelling- I like the connection to music and to the author [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] [name_m]Carroll[/name_m], and the literary vibes. He feels really sweet! What do you guys think and what imagery do you get from him?
Also, any spelling preferences? Carol/Caroll/Carroll…? I think I’m leaning towards [name_m]Caroll[/name_m] but I’d love to hear your thoughts.
I really like it for a boy! [name_f]My[/name_f] great-grandma has twin brothers named [name_m]Carroll[/name_m] and [name_f]Brooklyn[/name_f], and I’ve always really enjoyed them on boys. [name_m]Caroll[/name_m] specifically does feel very literary and Edwardian. I prefer the [name_m]Carroll[/name_m] spelling just because it looks more balanced imo, and with [name_f]Carol[/name_f] being the more common feminine form it just seems to differentiate it imo but I also prefer [name_m]Elliott[/name_m] to [name_m]Elliot[/name_m] and [name_m]Merritt[/name_m] to Meritt et al, so that may just be a me thing
I’ve known a couple guy Cary’s over the years (usually with this spelling) - I think at least one of them was short for Carroll. I wouldn’t do Carol for a boy, I don’t think, given the popularity of Carol and Carolyn/Caroline on girls, but I’m not opposed to Carroll? Caroll looks odd to me, I want to say kuh-ROLL instead of CARE-uhl.
In general I’m a massive, massive fan of unisex names on boys (Avery, Aubrey, Emerson, Finley, Bailey, Harper, Addison, Eden, even Shannon, Mackenzie, and Courtney), but Carroll admittedly doesn’t do much for me. But I’ve been around it enough that it wouldn’t surprise me or bother me; just not my favorite unisex name.
ETA: I also like the tie to Lewis Carroll, though, and a little boy might like the tie to Corbin Carroll if he’s into baseball (guess depends on his team, lol, but seems like a nice enough reference).
I think I like it in theory. Maybe more so for a character or something. I think without knowing the difference in spelling it would sound a little awkward, like calling a little boy [name_f]Susan[/name_f] or [name_f]Annette[/name_f]
I know a male Karol (I think it’s quite common in Poland, where he’s from!) and he never seemed to have any issues with it !! Granted, I met him in university, so I’m not sure if there would’ve been any childhood teasing about him having a “girl’s name” when he was little. But I think it works! It may be a little difficult to wear, considering how it sounds the same as Carol (f), but I think it’s classic enough that with a spelling difference you could make it work (although I personally would only do it as a middle name). I like the Carroll spelling more than Caroll, it just looks more masculine to me for some reason!
[name_f]My[/name_f] grandfather [name_m]Carroll[/name_m] was born in Niagara Falls. I was born and raised in [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]. He introduced me to all things genuinely winter and I’m a total snow/north addict since. Your vibe hit the spot and I appreciate the reminder of some of my favorite memories growing up.
[name_f]Love[/name_f] the question! [name_f]My[/name_f] grandfather from [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_m]York[/name_m] was [name_m]Carroll[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m]. It’s a surname in our family with significant importance. He was born in 1912 well before the [name_f]Carol[/name_f] surge on females and he still had many struggles with it over the years. I found it to be interesting and stately. I could only see it as a strong surname perfect for him because that’s the way I knew him. But, I witnessed his corrections everywhere.
Now more than ever, though, people will be forced to consider names before assuming because unisex names are more in use than in history. If there was a time to do it, this is it. I really like the idea of it.
His family resorted to calling him Carr at home (like car, not care) bc his name was misrepresented so often.
I want to say yes. I’d love to see it swing to the male side. In your favor, the Carols have dropped off significantly.
