[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]Carson[/name_u] works as a nickname for [name_m]Charles[/name_m]? My husband’s name is [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] [name_m]Jr[/name_m]. and really wants our son to be [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] III. We considered using [name_m]Trey[/name_m] as a nickname but I feel like there’s no point in naming him [name_m]Charles[/name_m] if we’re going to call him [name_m]Trey[/name_m]. My husband goes by [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and his father goes by [name_m]Chuck[/name_m], so we’re looking for a new nickname option! I like [name_u]Carson[/name_u]. What do you think?
Side note: Our daughter’s names are [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] and [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f].
I had a childhood friend that went by [name_m]Chip[/name_m]. [name_f]Adore[/name_f] [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and [name_m]Chip[/name_m]. There is also [name_m]Chas[/name_m]/[name_m]Chaz[/name_m].
[name_m]Trey[/name_m] makes more sense than [name_u]Carson[/name_u]. He would be the third [name_m]Charles[/name_m], so [name_m]Trey[/name_m]. [name_u]Carson[/name_u] doesn’t work in my opinion.
My brother is [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] (both family names).
To me [name_u]Carson[/name_u] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m] have no connection. They just sound like completely different names. I think. [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] for your son would be cute too!
I think [name_u]Carson[/name_u] is fine. Another cute nickname for [name_m]Charles[/name_m] could be [name_m]Hal[/name_m]/[name_m]Hale[/name_m]. I know it’s usually a nickname for [name_m]Henry[/name_m] & [name_m]Harold[/name_m] but I think that since the letters are within the name, it could work. [name_u]Chase[/name_u] or [name_m]Carl[/name_m] could as well.
My favorite nickname for [name_m]Charles[/name_m] is [name_m]Chet[/name_m]. I’ve also heard [name_m]Trip[/name_m] used as nickname for a boy who is the third with his name (short for triple.)
I can see where you might get [name_u]Carson[/name_u] from Charles Jonathan that way, but that’s quite a stretch. Most people will likely be confused. Also, naming him [name_m]Charles[/name_m] and calling him [name_m]Trey[/name_m] isn’t any different than naming him [name_m]Charles[/name_m] and calling him [name_u]Carson[/name_u]. They’re completely different names than the name he was born with. [name_m]Trey[/name_m] makes more sense than [name_u]Carson[/name_u]. I also like the previous suggestion of [name_m]Chip[/name_m].
I’d use [name_m]Trey[/name_m]. [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name. Formal name [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] III, nickname [name_m]Trey[/name_m]. It’s the perfect opportunity.
Yeah, I think that’s kind of a stretch…It’s kind of like you said, there’s no point in naming him [name_m]Charles[/name_m] if you’re going to call him [name_u]Carson[/name_u]. I think [name_u]Carson[/name_u] works great on its own, but if you like the family ties with [name_m]Charles[/name_m], there are plenty of other, more suitable nicknames.
One of the [name_m]Bates[/name_m]’ girls (from the show Bringing Up [name_m]Bates[/name_m]) has a little boy named [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] IV who they call [name_u]Carson[/name_u], so you wouldn’t be the first!
I don’t see how calling him [name_u]Carson[/name_u] is any different that calling him [name_m]Trey[/name_m]…it’s still not the name you’re giving him. My favorite nn for [name_m]Charles[/name_m] is [name_m]Chaz[/name_m]. So, if it were me, I’d call him CJ or [name_m]Chaz[/name_m]. Or, if dad is [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and Grandpa is [name_m]Chuck[/name_m], just call him [name_m]Charles[/name_m].
I’m posting again to add that while I think a lot of the naysayer’s problem with using [name_m]Charles[/name_m] nn [name_u]Carson[/name_u] is that [name_u]Carson[/name_u] is its own name with its own meaning and history apart from [name_m]Charles[/name_m] - while [name_m]Trey[/name_m] is used for a third generation son and [name_m]Chaz[/name_m], [name_m]Chip[/name_m], etc. are only diminutives of [name_m]Charles[/name_m] without meanings of their own. I don’t think anyone properly explained that, which I think helps clear up some of the comments of “it makes more sense to use [name_m]Trey[/name_m] than [name_u]Carson[/name_u]” or things along those lines! Go with what you love and call him what you like. If I met a little boy or man who said “My name is [name_m]Charles[/name_m], but please call me [name_u]Carson[/name_u]” I wouldn’t lose sleep over it!
