[name_f]My[/name_f] friend and I were talking today about the topic of boy’s names on girls. I mentioned how I didn’t like how extreme the trend was getting, where one of my favorite boys’ names, [name_u]Carter[/name_u], was getting used for girls. Her response was not what I expected. She said she likes [name_u]Carter[/name_u] more as a girl’s name because all she can think of is [name_f]Selena[/name_f] Gomez’s character in [name_f]Princess[/name_f] Protection Program. This really shocked me because I don’t see [name_u]Carter[/name_u] as being even the least bit feminine but now I’m wondering, is [name_u]Carter[/name_u] “going to the girls”, so to speak? Does it seem more masculine or feminine to you and which gender do you prefer it on? Thanks for your thoughts!
I have a female neighbor (adult) w/the name. It works for her!
Haha, that’s funny - [name_f]Selena[/name_f] Gomez’s character was the first thing that came to my mind too. She’s the only girl [name_u]Carter[/name_u] I’ve ever heard of. But I have met several boys with the name.
I have never personally met a girl named [name_u]Carter[/name_u] but I’ve met a handful of boys names this. I think it is a totally masculine name, it sounds so unattractive for a girl [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. I’ve seen the name spelled out Kartyr and [name_m]Karter[/name_m] for girls before. Eww
I think not. [name_u]Carter[/name_u] has been extremely trendy for boys in the South for at least ten years, so it’s not girly at all around here. And names don’t “go to the girls” unless parents stop using them for their sons out of fear that gasp their son might share his name with a female classmate. So there’s that.
Well I’d never not use a name because of the possibility of a opposite gender classmate.
I have only met males named [name_u]Carter[/name_u]. [name_u]Carter[/name_u] is handsome.
A girl I knew growing up has a daughter named [name_u]Carter[/name_u].
I wouldn’t worry about it becoming super popular for girls. Of all the babies born in 2013 named [name_u]Carter[/name_u], only 3% were girls.
I associate the name with the MTV show Finding [name_u]Carter[/name_u], wherein [name_u]Carter[/name_u] is a girl character. But the only Carters I’ve met in real life are boys.
When I started watching that movie the name [name_u]Carter[/name_u] on a girl bothered me like crazy…but I soon got used to it. Same thing goes for [name_m]Clarke[/name_m] (a big The 100 fan). The thing is that while such names do initially feel an odd choice for a girl, the characters wear them so well which I suppose just proves that they can work well on girls.
I’m one who really dislikes the surnames as first names trend, particularly on girls, but on boys too, so I’m no advocate for [name_u]Carter[/name_u] in general, boy or girl. That said, I do see it as more masculine than feminine, that’s for sure.
It’s a surname. It has been used for boys for some time now and now people start to use it for girls too. It is a surname, not a boys name. But I’m it will not “go to the girls”, only if people stop using it for boys.
I remember having a girl cashier with [name_u]Carter[/name_u] on her nametag once. She would have been around 16 at the absolute youngest (she was probably actually around 18, give or take a year), and this was a few years ago. It sticks out in my mind because she wore the name very well. I thought it suited her.
I agree that I don’t believe in names “going to the girls.” If parents start using a boys name you like on their daughters, use it on your son anyway if you love it.
It doesn’t sound flattering on a girl in my opinion. It does sound handsome on a boy though.
I’ve only met one [name_u]Carter[/name_u]…so I only think of it as a male name.
I have met a couple of girls named [name_u]Carson[/name_u] and even though I’ve never met a boy by that name I always think of it as a boy name.
[name_f]My[/name_f] surname is somewhat similar to [name_u]Carter[/name_u] and I’ve often thought about using it for either gender of baby that I have. I’ve always loved to be called by my last name, much more than my first name.
I grew up with a female [name_u]Carter[/name_u], and I meet females with the name every now and then of various ages, but I don’t think it has gone over to the girls’ side. It is still more boys than girls. Handsome choice.
