Carys/Cerys

We were due yesterday (baby wants to stay in longer of course…) and I suddenly am freaking out about names. I have been absolutely in love with the name [name]Carys[/name]/[name]Cerys[/name] this pregnancy, especially fitting IF the baby is born in February. I feel like [name]CArys[/name] flows better for spelling but I like the pronunciation CARE-IS rather than CAR-IS (like I’m driving a car…is). I’ve seen some sites that say [name]Cerys[/name] is pronounced with CARE whereas [name]Carys[/name] is pronounced with CAR. A BBC site for Welsh baby names with pronunciation said them both the same. I’m an engineer and word pronunciation has never been that important to me but I don’t want to give the baby a name that I constantly mispronounce. I would say CARE-IS for either spelling but wanted to see what everyone else thinks. Thanks for any help!

I don’t know where you live, but I’m from the US and definitely pronounce [name]Carys[/name] the way you want: CARE-is. When I first saw the [name]Cerys[/name] spelling, I thought it might be pronounced SARE-is, with a soft S sound at the beginning. I’m wondering how many other Americans would make that mistake. That may be an issue that your daughter may have to deal with her whole life if you go with that spelling.

[name]Long[/name] made short, [name]Carys[/name] is GORGEOUS!!!

I would go with [name]Carys[/name], pronounced CARE-is.

Until now, I didn’t know how to say these. My attempts were:
[name]Carys[/name]: Ka-reese (blame [name]Star[/name] Trek). Care-iss would’ve been my next guess; I would never have thought Kahr-iss.
[name]Cerys[/name]: Sir-iss (and I hated this possibility).

[name]Hi[/name], [name]Lyndsay[/name]!

I prefer the look of [name]Carys[/name], personally, and I say it CARE-iss, too! Well, sometimes I switch it up and say CAR-iss, but pretty much CARE-iss! [name]Lovely[/name] name!

[name]Lemon[/name]

Thanks Berries! I’m feeling much better about spelling CARE-IS [name]Carys[/name]!

I say CARE-iss for [name]Carys[/name]. To be honest, I’m not sure how to pronounce [name]Cerys[/name] when I look at it. I really like [name]Carys[/name].

[name]Hi[/name]! (There’s another poster who uses [name]Lyndsay[/name] as her screen name, so I was confused at first!)

I totally love [name]Carys[/name], and I pronounce it Care-is, like you do.

Good luck!

[name]Carys[/name] is my absolute favorite girls name! and I like Care-is too! and I think that [name]Carys[/name] looks right for that pronunciation- best of luck! whats the middle name? congratulations!!

Hey Caitalinna! We actually don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl so I might not get to use [name]Carys[/name]! I feel like I will though so we’ll see! My husband would like to use [name]Jane[/name] or [name]Lucy[/name] (maybe [name]Lucie[/name]) for a middle name and if I get my way with [name]Carys[/name] I might just let him! His top girls name is [name]Adelaide[/name] or [name]Adalyn[/name] becuase he’s in love with the nn [name]Ady[/name].

Unbelievable timing! I was just about to post this exact same thing (I am due [name]March[/name] 16th, want to use [name]Carys[/name], just found a site that said [name]Cerys[/name] is CARE-iss, [name]Carys[/name] is CAR-iss and started to freak out). I feel so much better than universally the responses on here are that [name]Carys[/name] is CARE-iss.

To complete my jumping in, my middle name contenders are:
[name]Carys[/name] [name]Elodie[/name]
[name]Carys[/name] [name]Rhiannon[/name]
[name]Carys[/name] [name]Alexei[/name]
[name]Carys[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] (too much maybe)
[name]Carys[/name] [name]Alayne[/name]

[name]Love[/name] [name]Carys[/name]!

Boys’ names that are so wild and lovely like [name]Carys[/name]:

[name]Alfred[/name] nn [name]Alfie[/name]
[name]Anders[/name]
[name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Blaise[/name]
[name]Declan[/name]
[name]Edwin[/name]
[name]Finnian[/name] nn [name]Finn[/name]
[name]Gavin[/name] - but it is pretty popular.
[name]Harvey[/name]
[name]Lachlan[/name]
[name]Miles[/name]
[name]Owen[/name] - It’s popular.
[name]Reed[/name]
[name]Rupert[/name]
[name]Simon[/name]

Here to clear up the pronunciation thing for [name]Carys[/name]. I consider myself an expert, because it happens to be my name. It is pronounced Care-iss (like [name]Paris[/name] with a C). I suppose if you were Welsh (since the name is Welsh for “love”) you would pronounce it Car- iss because of the accent. I love my name, but just so you know, many, many people mispronounce it, which isn’t so bad the first time, but they do tend to continually mispronounce it. I have heard, Care-eeze, [name]Caresse[/name], Carisse, [name]Cary[/name], Cares. It would be easier if it was spelled [name]Caris[/name], but I am rather partial to the y in my name. [name]Just[/name] some things to consider, but I do love my name!!

I would pronounce [name]Carys[/name] as CARE-iss.

[name]Cerys[/name] I’d pronounce SARE-iss.

When you type CARE-is do you mean CARE-iz or CARE-iss?

I love the name [name]Cerys[/name] but i am biased because 1 of my daughters has that name. It is actually pronounced [name]Kerr[/name]-is. When i tell people her name they always love it, however when people read her name then they have problems pronouncing it e.g. Serr-is, [name]Cerise[/name] and many more variations. My dad called her [name]Cerise[/name] until she was about 3mths-old, lol.
