Casper The Friendly Ghost

I’m in love with the name " Casper" but can’t get over the Friendly Ghost association. What do you think about the name? and do you think the association would fade away gradually when my son gets the name? Would you take this risk?

I think about that too, so i would go with [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] or [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] instead.

I think it will fade away and then it will just be your son.
I love that name too!

I met a little [name_m]Casper[/name_m] a few years back and no one mentioned the ghost. If i met a [name_m]Casper[/name_m], the association would be there in my mind, but not really at the forefront or something I’d feel the need to say

I adore Casper! I grew up watching the Casper movie and I’m not bothered by it at all. I knew a Caspar once and it never crossed my mind.

[name_m]Casper[/name_m] the Friendly Ghost always comes up when [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is mentioned and I don’t understand why it’s such a bad thing :ghost:

It’s not a big show any more for children growing up now, and even if it were, he’s a cute, fun character.

[name_m]Casper[/name_m] is a fabulous name. I slightly prefer the [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] spelling which would distance it from the character a tiny bit more if it really does bother you.

I love Casper and all its variations: Caspar, Kasper, Kaspar, Gaspar, Gaspard, Jasper…
It’s a charming, quirky and bold name, but familiar at the same time. Furthermore, I’m sure new generations aren’t familiar with the Ghost, and adults won’t make any comment about it.

I’d use Casper in a heartbeat if I had the chance (but I don’t, so instead I have Gaspar)

I think it will fade. That isn’t my first thought when I hear [name_m]Casper[/name_m] anymore. After all, it was a name before the friendly ghost! I have seen a commercial with [name_m]Casper[/name_m] in it recently, but I never watched the movie myself and it was big in that time frame. If you love it, go for it. I think it will be fine.

I like [name_m]Casper[/name_m]! It’s my nephew’s name and as far as I’m aware nobody mentions the ghost. I agree with maybe using the [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] spelling if you want to distance it a little but really I think [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is totally fine! If you can’t get over the connection, how do you feel about the name [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] instead?

I think of the ghost and [name_m]Casper[/name_m] Weinberger, so between those I am not too into the name.

But if I met a darling little [name_m]Casper[/name_m], I think I could get beyond my old associations.

I do prefer [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] or [name_m]Cassander[/name_m] or [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] though.

I don’t think it’s an issue at all. I considered [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] for my son and I’ve also taught a few Caspers/Caspars. I don’t even know if kids these days would know the [name_m]Casper[/name_m] the Friendly Ghost association (maybe I’m totally wrong). And even if they do, he’s a cute, nice character so I don’t see why it matters. If you love it go for it!

10 years ago that would probably have been my first association, but that has already faded with time for me as I’ve met actual people with the name. So when I hear Casper/Caspar now it doesn’t occur to me at all until someone brings it up like you did now.

I think it’s okay. You never know what name may become a pop culture reference any how! [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is no [name_f]Katniss[/name_f]. :woman_shrugging:t2: I think you’re all right.

I’ve known a [name_m]Casper[/name_m] before but he never mentioned a problem with the name. I wouldn’t think it to be a negative association anyway. It will probably fade away especially with the new generation. They probably wouldn’t even know who that is.
