Help! My partner’s number 1 name is Cassandra and has been obsessed with it the last 9 months. But I am fixated on the “ass” I can see in the spelling which is putting me off, which is also in Cass/Cassie. I could spell Cassandra with one S but she may need to correct people rest of life. So could be Cas/Casie/Casandra - thoughts? I should add my partner named my toddler’s doll Cassie so toddler is already saying that name. Our surname is Matthews. Alternative name we could use is Elsie but my partner not 100 percent on it. Edit: toddler sibling is called Calvin nickname Calvie so hoping to match with that.
[name_f]My[/name_f] eldest sister’s name is [name_f]Kassandra[/name_f] and nobody ever pointed out the ‘ass’ in her name, and she’s 37 now! I honestly never even noticed myself, now that I think of it. She also went by [name_f]Kacie[/name_f] as opposed to [name_f]Kassie[/name_f], which I think helped with that, so maybe [name_m]Casey[/name_m] could be an option for you!
My response probably not ideal at/near the top here as I’ve never liked Cassandra. I don’t like Cass/Cassie for a girl (prefer Cass/Casper/Cassian for a boy) and I don’t like the name Sandra. I have always felt a bit queasy about the name, not sure why.
If you do use it, I wouldn’t spell it with one S as you’ll just get questions about whether different pronunciation- and your child will be annoyed by people misspelling it (the traditional way). I would also think about nn Casey as suggested above - which is close to Elsie too.
Otherwise, can we save Cass for a boy (examples above) or the toy (and/or a future pet), and maybe go for another longer name so you both get something if your preference, like:
Elisabeth nn Elsie
Elsbeth/Elspeth nn Elsie
Or some other names you both might like and given you’re not sure about Elsie:
Genevieve nn Vivi or Evie
Cordelia
Celeste
Esther/Estelle nn Esti
Mabel nn Maisie
Susannah nn Sunny
Imogen nn Immy
Marianne
Romilly nn Romy
Florence
Cecilia
Philippa nn Pippa
Delphine nn Delphi
Cressida
Valerie nn Vali
Constance nn Connie/Coco/Tansy
Dahlia
[name_m]Welcome[/name_m] to Nameberry!
That part of [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] has never stood out to me, but I can see how it might be off-putting. I don’t love the [name_f]Casandra[/name_f] spelling as it makes me question the pronunciation (KAY-sandra?) and I would definitely say [name_f]Casie[/name_f] like [name_m]Casey[/name_m]. [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] works as well, but I do prefer it as a nickname.
I wonder if you’ve considered [name_f]Kelsey[/name_f]? Has a similar 90s feel and same starting sound as [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] and rhymes with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f].
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is really cute
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] is lovely - I wouldn’t really pay attention to the ‘ass’ in the middle, especially as [name_f]Cassidy[/name_f], [name_f]Cassie[/name_f], [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], [name_m]Cass[/name_m] etc. are so familiar.
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is sweet too - charming and vintage. Maybe [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Elysia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Elyssa[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] to balance between the two options?
I knew a [name_f]Cassidy[/name_f] as a kid. No one ever mentioned the “ass” part of her name. I don’t think your daughter would get teased for it or anything. But if it bothers you personally, then you won’t like the name, and you probably won’t like it more if you have to hear it all the time.
So you should see if your partner warms up to [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]. If they don’t, find out what about [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] they liked so much, and try to find another name with some of those same qualities but doesn’t have hidden swear words in it.
I have never, ever thought about [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] containing “ass”. But if it bothers you, it’s probably enough to count it out. It’s a shame, because it’s a lovely name!
Perhaps you could consider [name_f]Calandra[/name_f] nn [name_f]Callie[/name_f] instead? [name_m]Or[/name_m] [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f] nn [name_f]Allie[/name_f] or [name_m]Sandy[/name_m]?
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is sweet too - I like it as a nickname for [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] or similar.
Some other ideas that feel similar in style to [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] to me:
[name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] [name_f]Nessie[/name_f]
[name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] [name_f]Lissie[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f] [name_f]Mindy[/name_f] or [name_f]Mandy[/name_f]
[name_f]Melissa[/name_f] [name_f]Missy[/name_f] or [name_f]Lissie[/name_f]
[name_f]Christina[/name_f] [name_m]Christie[/name_m] or [name_f]Chrissie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] [name_f]Lucie[/name_f]
[name_f]Amanda[/name_f] [name_f]Mandy[/name_f]
[name_f]Calista[/name_f] [name_f]Callie[/name_f]
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f] [name_f]Frannie[/name_f]
[name_f]Candice[/name_f] [name_f]Candy[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassia[/name_f] is a favorite of mine so I lean towards [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]. While is does contain the letters ass it’s unusual to me to fixate on it…
It also feels a little less trendy than [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] which reminds me of [name_f]Kelsey[/name_f], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], and all the other [name_f]El[/name_f]- names. But [name_f]El[/name_f]- names are always popular for a reason!
Good luck
