Congrats on your newborn!
I think [name_u]Pau[/name_u] is super sweet and a really nice cultural tie-back-- but if you’re thinking it’s too nicknamey/little kid, what about [name_m]Paulo[/name_m] nickname [name_u]Pau[/name_u]?
[name_m]Paulo[/name_m] is the Portuguese version of [name_u]Pau[/name_u] and I think it works really nicely as a longer version while still keeping your baby’s name.
I think it works well in [name_f]English[/name_f] too, especially in NYC that’s so multicultural.
Good luck!!

Thank you su much for your suggestions! [name_f]My[/name_f] husband is Italian so we have the option to use [name_m]Paolo[/name_m] too - that’s a great idea to leverage other languages!

You’re right! It’s mostly a kid / teenager name now but all those “Paus” will grow up eventually. It’s ranked between 3 and 6-7 for top baby boy names in Catalonia / [name_f]Barcelona[/name_f] for the past decade, so we should see an uptick in name frequency among grown ups in a few years.
Thank you [name_u]Alex[/name_u]! This is a good suggestion and even if we keep the name as is, in the future he can choose to play between [name_u]Pau[/name_u] and [name_m]Paolo[/name_m] (given daddy’s italian)
Does he have a middle name / middle names? I think that if you’re unsure of keeping his first name as is but don’t really have an alternative right now that you and your partner can agree on, maybe putting a name you love as a middle name could help you feel a bit more comfortable with the situation - if he doesn’t turn out to suit his first name, perhaps the switch would feel more natural to explain to family and friends, especially if you’re from cultures where you can’t really change a child’s name.
[name_u]Pau[/name_u] [name_m]Ferran[/name_m], for example, has a nice ring to it, even as a double first name.
Also, remember that not everyone has a “the name just clicked” moment while naming their child, especially when having to navigate different cultures - a compromise name doesn’t mean it’s any lesser than the most loved name. And at one point he’ll become the name
Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
Thank you so much for the suggestion! Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a middle name - they are not common in Spain / [name_f]Italy[/name_f].
I may try to sit on it for a bit longer, see if the name clicks. Husband is not keen on changing it - we’ve never heard of anyone ever doing that!
