Catherine

I have had [name]Catherine[/name] on my list as an MN for quite some time, but I am starting to consider it for a FN. I really love the NN [name]Cate[/name]/[name]Kate[/name] WDYT better as a FN or MN? Thanks!

I think it works well as a first name or middle name.
I prefer the spelling [name]Katherine[/name] though for nn [name]Kate[/name] / [name]Katie[/name]

I think it’s a lovely first name, but I really dislike the nn [name]Katie[/name] - it’s so common! [name]Cate[/name] is nice though (spelt this way!) Unfortunately [name]Catherine[/name] would sound silly with my fiances last name as it starts with a hard C, so I can never use it :frowning:

I like [name]Cate[/name] aswell, its strong enough to stand on its own. I dont like [name]Cathrine[/name] - i have known so many, i feel its been over used and is now boring.

I think it works nicely in the middle or up front. I do know a lot of people with the name, and most go by [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Katie[/name]. My bigger issue is that I prefer the full name [name]Catherine[/name] but the nickname [name]Kate[/name], but I think the first letter should remain consistent, lol.

I agree with [name]Sol[/name] that I’ve known a ton of [name]Catherine[/name]'s from my age to 60 and I feel it’s overdone.

My opinion is that you can keep it as a middle name and still call her [name]Cate[/name]. All the middle names on my list have a nn I would use for my kid. That way, the middle name actually gets used.

I love [name]Catherine[/name]! It feels both familiar/down-to-earth and regal, which is what I love about it. Anyone could be a [name]Catherine[/name]. And I love the nn [name]Cate[/name] (this spelling! Swoon!). As for whether it should be a FN or a MN, lol, that’s up to you to decide, I think. I’ve been having the same problem with [name]Hazel[/name], and I don’t really think anyone else can make that decision, it’s just a personal choice. [name]Catherine[/name] definitely works in either the FN or MN position, though, and I think [name]Catherine[/name], nn [name]Cate[/name], would be a lovely addition to your list as a FN.

[name]Catherine[/name] is one of the few names I can think of that is honestly universally liked. Yes, some people will think it is overdone but I can’t think of a negative thing anyone could say about it. I think it is really beautiful, tons of nns and my favorite is also [name]Cate[/name]. And about the K/C thing, the new duchess is [name]Catherine[/name]/[name]Kate[/name], she seems to pull off the two different letters just fine :). I love it in either spot, sorry, not tons of help but I absolutely think it makes a beautiful fn.

I love [name]Catherine[/name] as a fn and mn. If you spell [name]Catherine[/name] with a “c” then I prefer a nn of [name]Cate[/name] and if you spell it with a “k” then you can use [name]Kate[/name]. I prefer it with a “C” and definitely do not like it with a “Y” ([name]Kathryn[/name]/[name]Cathryn[/name]). We are planning on using it for our daughter due in [name]April[/name]. I am having a hard time deciding which position as well. My children are [name]Jack[/name] and [name]Claire[/name]. My problem with using it as a fn is the repetition of hard “K” sounds. A lot of people say it is fine, including my husband, but I haven’t come around to it yet. The name is of great meaning to me and I can’t wait for my daughter to have it!

It depends on what’s your idea for the other (whether fn or mn). But I like [name]Catherine[/name], for fn/mn. It’ll be pretty. I prefer the spelling [name]Catherine[/name] with [name]Kate[/name] as nn.

I love [name]Catherine[/name] (especially with this spelling)! I don’t know any [name]Catherine[/name]'s (or [name]Katherine[/name]'s) in real life, so, to me, [name]Cate[/name]/[name]Kate[/name] and [name]Catie[/name]/[name]Katie[/name] feels a lot more overused, since there’s so many of them (my teenage cousin is [name]Katie[/name] only, not [name]Katherine[/name]).
I would leave [name]Catherine[/name] in the front, and pair it with an unexpected middle name, so it feels even more fresh, as opposed to [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Ann[/name]/[name]Anne[/name]/[name]Grace[/name]/[name]Marie[/name]/[name]Leigh[/name]/[name]Rose[/name], etc.

I love both spellings and the nickname, I think it would be great first name choice. I like [name]Kate[/name] much better than [name]Kathy[/name] as far as the nicknames go.

One of my best friends is named [name]Catherine[/name], so I love it  She never goes by [name]Cate[/name]/[name]Kate[/name] though… occasionally [name]Cat[/name], but usually just [name]Catherine[/name]. It could work great as either FN or MN, in my opinion, depending on what you pair it with.

I love it. Strong, classic name. I like [name]Kate[/name]/[name]Cate[/name] as a nn as well as [name]Kay[/name]/[name]Cay[/name].

Wow! Thanks everyone for all the responses  I think I am going to add it to the list as FN. I am not that particular on the spelling of [name]Cate[/name]/[name]Kate[/name], I like both for separate reasons, but I am adamant about the [name]Catherine[/name] spelling

My name is [name]Catherine[/name] and I go by [name]Cat[/name] (which my mother hates, so beware!). Now that I am older, I think about going to [name]Catherine[/name]. I [name]LOVE[/name] the spelling, but obvs biased! I love [name]Cate[/name] as well, but really don’t like [name]Cathy[/name]!

I love the [name]Catherine[/name] spelling too. Something about the “K” automatically makes a name look trendy to me (even though [name]Katherine[/name] isn’t trendy). I prefer [name]Catherine[/name] in full, as nicknames [name]Cate[/name] and [name]Catie[/name] (in all their various spellings) are completely overdone to me.
