Chance of a comeback, or not in this lifetime.

A few names that may be in your family, but would you consider passing them on to your child. I am a fan of quite a few of these names and am wondering if I am the only one.

[name]Gertrude[/name]
[name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Bernice[/name]
[name]Beulah[/name]
[name]Doris[/name]
[name]Marlys[/name]
[name]Mildred[/name]
[name]Ethel[/name]
[name]Vinita[/name]
[name]Mildred[/name]
[name]Hortense[/name]
[name]Thelma[/name]
[name]Hester[/name]
[name]Sophronia[/name]
[name]Eunice[/name]
[name]Gladys[/name]

I was delighted to see [name]Minerva[/name] popping up.

[name]Lily[/name] [name]Allen[/name]'s older daughter is named [name]Ethel[/name]. Does that count as a comeback?

[name]Hester[/name] is the only one I like.

I could see [name]Ethel[/name] making a come back, and maybe [name]Sophronia[/name] with the popularity Of [name]Sophia[/name] and rising popularity of [name]Seraphina[/name]. And maybe [name]Marlys[/name] as people look for a fuller form of [name]Marley[/name]. And possibly [name]Vinita[/name] with 'V’s becoming popular and it’s simplicity.

I had forgotten about that, I don’t think it is a full-fledged comeback, but it does put it out where people can begin to reconsider the name. It is one of my least favorite names listed. [name]Gertrude[/name] was my grandmother’s name. She died very young, and I would have attempted to use it some way if I had been blessed with a child.

[name]Vinita[/name] was a relative of my father. She was born in the early 1900’s, and I have never heard of anyone else with the name. Her sisters were [name]Alice[/name], [name]Florence[/name], and [name]Ethel[/name], so I wonder where her parents found [name]Vinita[/name].

I have a hard time with [name]Gertrude[/name] itself on a small child, but I think using it with the nn [name]Tru[/name] would breathe youth back into it.

I really like [name]Hester[/name] So I’d use that one. My friends have a daughter with the middle name [name]Beulah[/name]. Really not a fan of that name but I guess it must be a family thing.

Of your family names, these are my favorites

[name]Gertrude[/name] - I love this with the nn [name]Trudy[/name]!
[name]Bertha[/name] - I have an elderly neighbor named [name]Bertha[/name]. She is such a dear and we call her Grammie [name]Bertie[/name]!
[name]Bernice[/name] - [name]One[/name] of my Grandfather’s bff’s was named this! She is such a lovely dear old lady she is refered to by Neecie.
[name]Beulah[/name] - My husband’s Aunt had this name. I had never heard it before I met her. She was so elegant and went by the full Aunt [name]Beulah[/name].
[name]Marlys[/name] - I love this one. It sounds very feminine.
[name]Mildred[/name] - I like the nn [name]Millie[/name] so I could use this
[name]Vinita[/name] - Very unusual yet beautiful!
[name]Hester[/name] - This remindes me of a beautiful lace handkerchief!
[name]Sophronia[/name] - So pretty! A unique twist on [name]Sophia[/name].

I am a huge fan of the nn [name]Minnie[/name] so I could totally use [name]Minerva[/name] too!

Some others that I’m in love with from my family heritage are:

[name]Philomena[/name]
[name]Wilhelmina[/name]
[name]Florence[/name]/[name]Flossie[/name]

I like these ones:
[name]Gertrude[/name]
[name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Mildred[/name]
[name]Ethel[/name]
[name]Thelma[/name]
[name]Gladys[/name]

The only ones I can see making a comeback are [name]Ethel[/name] and [name]Vinita[/name].

I really like:
[name]Vinita[/name]
[name]Thelma[/name]
and [name]Hester[/name].

I could totally see [name]Vinita[/name] working right now. With the V trend and its fresh and spunky sound.
(FYI: Vinita is a town in Oklahoma).

I know a wee [name]Gertrude[/name], and while i found it odd at first, i’ve become fond of it! She is just the cutest little girl. Seeing it on a sweet child definitely changes my perspective on the name.

[name]Gertrude[/name]…I had an aunt named this, and I am in my 50’s. I actually like this name, but I think it looks unattractive. I like [name]Tru[/name] and [name]Trudy[/name] and even [name]Gertie[/name] to a lesser extent. But when I look at it I see [name]Gert[/name] [name]Rude[/name].
[name]Bertha[/name]…I had an aunt named this, too. I like [name]Bertie[/name], and I like [name]Berthe[/name], but don’t like the look or sound of [name]Bertha[/name].
[name]Bernice[/name]…Wasn’t this the name of the little girl in “[name]Hope[/name] Floats”? I actually like this one a lot.
[name]Beulah[/name]…Seems very southern to me. But there’s also something unpleasant about it for me, personally.
[name]Doris[/name]…I can’t get used to seeing this one bandied about. This and [name]Delores[/name] seem so stodgy to me.
[name]Marlys[/name]…It’s not bad.
[name]Mildred[/name]…I had an aunt named this, too. This is another one that seems somehow dated, and yet quite fresh. I have to confess to loving it.
[name]Ethel[/name]…There is nothing that could make me like [name]Ethel[/name]. It just hits all my senses wrong.
[name]Vinita[/name]…I like this.
[name]Hortense[/name]…This is right there with [name]Ethel[/name] for me.
[name]Thelma[/name]…I love [name]Thelma[/name]. I would love for this name to make a comeback.
[name]Hester[/name]…I prefer [name]Esther[/name], but this is a fine name.
[name]Sophronia[/name]…Gorgeous.
[name]Eunice[/name]…Another [name]Ethel[/name]/[name]Hortense[/name] for me.
[name]Gladys[/name]…I had an aunt named this, too. My father, who didn’t like her, called her Aunt [name]Happy[/name] Butt. I can’t unthink that when I hear the name [name]Gladys[/name], so it’s destroyed for me.

I also like the names [name]Pearl[/name], [name]Judith[/name], [name]Esther[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], [name]Betty[/name], [name]Joan[/name], [name]Sylvia[/name], [name]Ruth[/name], [name]Agnes[/name], and [name]Dorothy[/name].

[name]Hester[/name] is one of my favourite names and [name]Gladys[/name] is a lovely name too.

I wouldn’t use any on my children personally, but the ones I see making comebacks:
[name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Beulah[/name]
[name]Marlys[/name]
[name]Vinita[/name]
[name]Thelma[/name]
[name]Sophronia[/name]

IMHO…

[name]Gertrude[/name]: I actually have a soft spot for [name]Gretchen[/name] and [name]Gertrude[/name] and adore the spunky nn [name]Trudy[/name]. I say yes!
[name]Bertha[/name]: Not in this lifetime or the next.
[name]Bernice[/name]: See above.
[name]Beulah[/name]: See above.
[name]Doris[/name]: More likely [name]Dorothy[/name] or [name]Dorothea[/name], but [name]Dory[/name] is super cute.
[name]Marlys[/name]: [name]Mar[/name]-liss? I’ve never heard this one. I prefer [name]Mavis[/name].
[name]Mildred[/name]: [name]Millie[/name] and [name]Milly[/name], yes, with [name]Mildred[/name] (or [name]Matilda[/name]) on the birth certificate.
[name]Ethel[/name]: No. [name]Edie[/name], yes!
[name]Vinita[/name]: Again, never heard of it. Prefer [name]Veronica[/name].
[name]Hortense[/name]: Sounds like a Victorian dowager and will be shortened to “wh*re” the second she hits middle school.
[name]Thelma[/name]: Eh, sure, though it would definitely be a less-than-hip hipster choice. [name]Thora[/name] is vastly cooler.
[name]Hester[/name]: I love [name]Hester[/name], and she’s on-trend with other vintage celestial names like [name]Stella[/name]. Yes!
[name]Sophronia[/name]: Sounds like a frillier version of [name]Sophie[/name] and lacks a good nn. No on grounds of style, not datedness.
[name]Eunice[/name]: Not. [name]Ever[/name].
[name]Gladys[/name]: [name]Gloria[/name], sure. [name]Gladys[/name] has video game associations for me, and sounds like “gland”. No.

No, these names will never make a comeback. I can see a few Berries choosing them, but they will never be popular. I love vintage names, but these names do not appeal to me. They are too harsh sounding.
[name]Hester[/name] is the only one that I like.
Two vintage names that I see making a comeback - [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Lavinia[/name] - because of Downton [name]Abbey[/name].
I think there is a [name]Lavinia[/name] in my family tree and I would use it, but my husband would never go for it.

I wasn’t even aware that [name]Marlys[/name] was an older name, I went to high school with a girl named [name]Marlys[/name], I was seriously under the impression it was invented!

[name]Just[/name] my thoughts, not if they will make a comeback or not:

[name]Gertrude[/name] - love this, though I’d opt for the nn [name]Gerry[/name] over [name]Gertie[/name] or [name]Trudy[/name]
[name]Bertha[/name] - sounds like a bathtub
[name]Bernice[/name] - not a fan of [name]Bernie[/name].
[name]Beulah[/name] - I’m never sure how to pronounce this…
[name]Doris[/name] - “Door” puts me off
[name]Marlys[/name] - this is a name? I guess old ladies like creative-y-looking things sometimes too
[name]Mildred[/name] - love! For no good reason! Although, I do love [name]Millie[/name]. That’s a better focus than the second syllable “dread.”
[name]Ethel[/name] - makes me think of ethenol, like gasoline
[name]Vinita[/name] - Didn’t even know this was a name. Definitely could come back
[name]Mildred[/name] - is on here twice? Still love!
[name]Hortense[/name] - “An elephant’s faithful one hundred percent.” No, thanks.
[name]Thelma[/name] - not bad, though not a personal fan
[name]Hester[/name] - Prefer [name]Esther[/name]; better literary connotation
[name]Sophronia[/name] - ditto [name]Vinita[/name]
[name]Eunice[/name] - okay, better first syllable than Door.
[name]Gladys[/name] - [name]Joy[/name] works, why not glad?
