Changing My Name at 25

Hello! I have been a [name_m]LONG[/name_m] TIME lurker. (By long time I mean YEARS) I have always been attracted to names and interested with the meanings of them, how names go together and what type of aura they produce. With that being said my name has always slightly bothered me. On my birth certificate my name is [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f].

My mother wanted so badly to name me [name_u]Stevie[/name_u]. I’m assuming many of you relate that to [name_u]Stevie[/name_u] Nicks, which who I am essentially named after. My grandmother at the time of my birth refused to use that name so I was left with [name_u]Stevie[/name_u] [name_u]Nick[/name_u]'s biological name, [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f].

I never really cared for it. By the time I was in middle school I was spelling my name ‘[name_f]Stefanie[/name_f]’ because I wanted to be different and felt it suited my personality more. As time goes on my mother has stressed to me how she was pressured into naming me [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] despite her deep desires to call me [name_u]Stevie[/name_u].

I want to honor my mother, who means the world to me, but I worry that changing my name at this age would be a challenge.

[name_m]LONG[/name_m] [name_u]STORY[/name_u] SHORT: [name_m]How[/name_m] does everyone feel about the name [name_u]Stevie[/name_u]? Is it too “nickname”? Is it too masculine? I would really appreciate others opinions because I am considering changing my name legally. I am a big fan of [name_u]Stevie[/name_u] Nicks, as my mother is too, obviously. Any opinions?

Personally I like the name [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f], and I think you can always use the nickname [name_u]Stevie[/name_u] without legally change your name and still honours your mother’s wish. But then if it really means a lot for you to change it, I say go for it. Use [name_u]Stevie[/name_u] as merely a nickname first then legally change it. Many people will be just fine with it since they’re used to calling you [name_u]Stevie[/name_u] already. Good luck.

I say go for it! I know a girl (also 25!) named [name_u]Stevie[/name_u] and it suits her.
