Changing My Name? Help!

I would like to start going by my middle name ([name_f]Augustine[/name_f]) or a variant thereof before starting university. I don’t find that my current name suits me very well, and I prefer something more sophisticated and regal sounding (feminine but not girly). I’m half [name_m]German[/name_m], and [name_u]August[/name_u] variants are family names.

[name_f]Augustine[/name_f] (AU-gus-teen) - I like this name, but I’m worried people will think its masculine, even though the pronunciation is different (It is also a female name in Germany and [name_f]France[/name_f]). I also don’t know if the perception is different with younger people who might not be as familiar with the name. I do think it sounds quite pretty though.

[name_u]Auguste[/name_u] - This one is pretty close to [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], and I believe this is a family name. I like the [name_m]German[/name_m] pronunciation, but I’m not sure how well it carries over to English.

[name_f]Augusta[/name_f] - Definitely a female name. It seems a lot of people seem to either find it very elegant sounding, or very masculine (because of the gus sound).

[name_f]Augustina[/name_f] - I’m not sure about this one. It won’t be mixed up for a male name, but it also verges on girly sounding. It is also quite long, and I’m not a big fan of it’s nicknames.

It would be really helpful if you could let me know how you picture someone with each of these names as well as any other opinions you may have. Thanks in advance!

I think [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] would be a great choice for you! I agree, it is definitely a female name, but is not frilly or overly girly. I do not think the gus part makes it sound masculine. [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] is distinctive, fresh, and strong. It is a nice length, too. [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] is a pretty versatile name imo. But digging into more specific imagery… I picture a strong woman who courageously faces the world! She can be bold, especially when it comes to outdoor adventures. She can be very friendly and outgoing, and loves to take friends out to coffee or to explore antique shops. She also has a sweet, homey streak. I can imagine [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] in her herb garden, with a smile on her face. I really can picture [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] a lot of different places! I think it is a lovely, wearable choice

The other options…
[name_m]Augustine[/name_m] - Like you, I think this is really interesting. I am still more of an advocate of [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], though.
[name_u]Auguste[/name_u] - hmm. Yes, my first instinct would be to pronounce it just like [name_u]August[/name_u]. You may encounter some pronunciation/spelling issues with this one.
[name_f]Augustina[/name_f] - it seems like the cons may outweigh the pros here?

Good luck with everything!
