Character ever ruined a name?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!

So, I absolutely love the name [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]. But I’m reading a book where a supporting character’s name is [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], and I’m beginning to dislike the character more and more. It’s starting to affect my love of the name :frowning:

Has this ever happened to you? I don’t really mean names like Maleficent or [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] where they’re villains, but more so just regular characters you tend to dislike?

Yes! [name_f]My[/name_f] absolute least favourite name that I really do loath is [name_f]Cora[/name_f] (sorry [name_f]Cora[/name_f] lovers), and that’s because of a character in my favourite book. She wasn’t exactly a villain, but she was horrible. I don’t think I’ll ever like that name. :frowning: I also really don’t like [name_u]River[/name_u] Song from [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who, so [name_u]River[/name_u] is another name I dislike, especially on girls. I’ve only just come round to liking [name_f]Melody[/name_f] (spelt [name_f]Melodie[/name_f]). And [name_m]Donovan[/name_m] from [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] (ugh!), although [name_f]Sally[/name_f] (her first name) reminds me of [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] [name_m]Brown[/name_m]'s little sister too, so I’m fine with it. For a while I hated [name_m]Anderson[/name_m] too, but I think he’s redeemed himself somewhat, though I still dislike the name (too surnamey).

Those are probably the worst ones, but I’m sure there are more. But sometimes, when I really like a name (before I read the book), the character doesn’t completely put me off; it depends.

@myosotis haha [name_u]River[/name_u] Song is the reason I actually warmed up to [name_u]River[/name_u] and [name_f]Melody[/name_f] :stuck_out_tongue: Totally with you on [name_m]Donovan[/name_m] though.

I’ve never really thought about it before but this is definitely the case for me with [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]. [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] really is not my favourite Shakespearean play and I associate the name so strongly with that one character that it makes me hesitant to love it, despite it being a gorgeous name. I actually fell in love with [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] when I read Pride and Prejudice for the first time but now that is my strongest association with the name, and while I think she is a wonderful character I wouldn’t want to name a child after her. Funny, the combo [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] used to be on my list until these characters got in the way!

@morganalefaye, (love your username, and signature :)), I completely forgot about [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]! It’s so nice but I don’t like [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] [name_m]Bennet[/name_m], and she’s the only association I have too.

[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_m]Augustus[/name_m]. The Fault in our Stars kinda ruined it for me :expressionless:

I can’t think of any characters that have completely ruined names for me. I have to admit though that I prefer names that are not very popular so when I see names shoot up in popularity (i.e. names from Twilight) then those names lose much of their appeal to me. Not that I would have chosen those names anyway.

The name [name_f]Eve[/name_f] is ruined for me after reading The [name_m]Art[/name_m] of Racing in the [name_u]Rain[/name_u] :frowning: I love that book, but [name_f]Eve[/name_f] is the mother who tragically dies of cancer. Sorry, anyone who I spoiled that for- it really doesn’t give much away, don’t worry, it happens in the very beginning.

I’m sure there’s more than I’m thinking of, but I was really afraid [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] [name_m]Prior[/name_m] was going to ruin [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] for me! I am still not too thrilled by his character, but hey, at least the author didn’t kill him off for no good reason, so I have more things I’m miffed about as far as that series goes, lol. It takes a lot to be able to ruin a name for me, though.
