Character name is too similar to mine

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] guys, hope you all are doing okay.

I’m sort of having a small dilemma here concerning a character I was going to use for a small dark fantasy roleplay group.

He’s a rebellious character, he’s stubborn, shy, impulsive, and introverted. He mainly keeps to himself mainly because he has a birth defect on his tail (he’s a wolf spirit that has some human-like features) which he used to get made fun of for.

But he’s also a loyal friend. He will stick by you no matter what and he mainly places almost all of his faith on you, so if you betray him in anyway then he’ll very hurt and probably even depressed. He’s also very affectionate towards his friends and family, his family sometimes call him “Lovebug”, mainly since he has so much love to give, but he just doesn’t know how to show it.

He’s also quite unpredictable, which makes him a good fighter but maybe not the best person to talk to.

I wanted to name him [name_m]Valerian[/name_m] since I thought it fit him very well, and I really liked the meaning. But since my name is [name_f]Valeria[/name_f], I didn’t really want others to think that I named him after myself or that he’s a self-insert (definition: a character based on yourself that’s usually over-powered or made to be a “perfect” character). What should I do? Should I keep the name or should I find something else?

There are a few other characters named [name_f]Nerys[/name_f], one named [name_m]Vidar[/name_m], one named Kore, & another named [name_u]Seren[/name_u].

I’ve considered the name Sasha for him. Do you think that could work?

I’m mainly looking at the meaning of the name (so something meaning “strong”, “defending men”, etc. Or anything that could just hint to his personality) and how well it could work with the other characters. Thanks!

The immediate thing that jumped to mind for me is [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (meaning ‘defender of men’), or some variation thereof. In [name_f]Russia[/name_f], I believe, [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is a very common nickname for [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], and I definitely think that [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] fits the description of the character very well. In terms of using [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], if that’s something you want to pursue, and meaning of name, [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] “[name_u]Sasha[/name_u]” might be a good compromise.
