Characters in my new novel :)

These are the names of the characters in my new book ‘The Self Invention’. I’ve separated them into two different groups and provided a little bit of info. I’ve tried not to go into too much detail as the plot is insanely complex to write (not to read though thankfully!). The setting is Ledanrod, 1905. A city in a parallel world to ours in which Christianity never took off. People still worship a set of Greek style Gods. Electricity is the newest big thing but with no big wars to spur on development the world is at least twenty years behind ours technology wise.

The [name]Palace[/name]

Main Characters

[name]Princess[/name] Arg (Ayella [name]Rebecca[/name] [name]Georgiana[/name]) [name]Von[/name] Gartenfeld Hasley - Twenty. Known as Arg but refers to herself as Ayella. Rarely leaves the palace, is ignored by pretty much everyone in her family except for her Uncle [name]Olav[/name] and her old nursemaid Lady.

[name]Cashel[/name] Lockett- Thirty six. Known as [name]Cash[/name]. Drug addict and thief. He is part of a criminal gang masquerading as a theatre troupe.

Supporting Cast

[name]King[/name]: [name]Emmerich[/name] von Gartenfeld Hasley - A weak king. Bends to his wife’s every whim.

[name]Queen[/name]: Genovetta [name]Maria[/name] von Gartenfeld Hasley - Since the death of her only son (twenty seven years prior) she has been in constant mourning. She blames herself for his death and hasn’t been able to look at herself since. She banned mirrors throughout all of Ledanrod city and insists that everyone in the palace must wear masks in each others presence. Slightly nuts. She resents Ayella for not being the son she and [name]Emmerich[/name] desperately wanted.

Uncle: [name]Olav[/name] von Gartenfeld Hasley - Desperately trying to hold the country together.

Uncle: [name]Ulrich[/name] von Gartenfeld Hasley - Ayella’s tutor. He is extremely strict with her.

The Sisters: [name]Princess[/name] [name]Fay[/name] (Florianne [name]Araminta[/name] [name]Yasmine[/name]) [name]Von[/name] Gartenfeld Hasley
[name]Princess[/name] [name]Mel[/name] ([name]Magdalena[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Lorraine[/name]) [name]Von[/name] Gartenfeld Hasley
[name]Princess[/name] [name]Nan[/name] ([name]Nicolette[/name] [name]Adeline[/name] [name]Natalia[/name]) [name]Von[/name] Gartenfeld Hasley
[name]Princess[/name] [name]Bec[/name] ([name]Benedicta[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name] [name]Catherine[/name]) [name]Von[/name] Gartenfeld Hasley
[name]Princess[/name] [name]Ria[/name] (Raphaella [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Alexandrina[/name]) [name]Von[/name] Gartenfeld Hasley
[name]Princess[/name] Lot ([name]Lucienne[/name] [name]Octavia[/name] [name]Thomasine[/name]) [name]Von[/name] Gartenfeld Hasley

They’re all married to counts and barons and dukes etc and are all far older than Ayella. None are mentioned often but I wanted to know all their names anyway. [name]Just[/name] in case.

Nursemaid: [name]Leticia[/name] ‘Lady’ Morrowe - Raised Ayella.

Her [name]Son[/name]: [name]Leonardo[/name] ‘[name]Leo[/name]’ Morrowe - Lazy and boring. He is a jack of all trades and could be good at anything he wanted if only he had the focus and drive to go for it. He is happy to coast along.

Ayella’s Handmaid: [name]Grace[/name] Lockett - [name]Little[/name] sister to [name]Cash[/name]. Lives with her aunt and uncle. She and [name]Cash[/name] were abandoned by their parents when they were very small.

The Thieves

Main Characters

[name]Robin[/name] Apparently - Thirtyish but he can’t be sure. Woke up in an alleyway surrounded by bags of money with no memory. He is ‘rescued’ by Twist who tells him that he can either join his gang or face being hung when the police catch him. [name]Robin[/name] chooses the gang.

Twist - Forty eight. Named ‘The Director’ by his gang. Twist is an incredible actor and political dissident aiming to replace the [name]King[/name] with a puppet of his own choosing. Since [name]Robin[/name] has no memory, Twist decides he would be the perfect candidate and sets about moulding him into shape.

Cydrid [name]Roux[/name] - Forty four. Hair and makeup artist extraodinaire. She has the ability to transform people’s faces. An old flame of Twist she has been with the group for years. [name]Cash[/name] and [name]Grace[/name]'s mother.

[name]Gordy[/name] ‘[name]Hen[/name]’ Cammish - Thirty seven. The cook. [name]Hen[/name] is a little simple but will sometimes come out with gems of wisdom. He likes proverbs and his favourite sayings are about chickens, hence the nickname.

Supporting Cast:

The following names are members of Twist’s gang. I haven’t decided much about them yet but they’re mainly just names I can throw around to pad out the group.

Nettle
Norcross
Sheer
Vertigan
Pointer
[name]Bowman[/name]
[name]Kale[/name]

My two questions are as follows:

  1. [name]How[/name] would your pronounce Ayella if you saw it in a book?
  2. Are there are first name/surname combos that sound out of place to you? If so, why?

((If you feel you need more info on some of the characters to be able to judge please ask and I’ll write some more.))

If I saw Ayelle in a book I would pronounce it eye-ella

First of all, sounds like a great book, keep us updated! I like all the names, I think the criminal names are so cool. As for the pronunciation, while I was reading it I pronounced in my head like ae-ella. I meant the ae like the A is saying it’s name, if that makes any sense.

  1. Exactly how it’s spelled, Ay-ella.
  2. Not really, no. I think they all fit just fine, I didn’t see anything that seemed weird or out of place.

I love your idea, it’s brilliant. I would love to read the novel when it’s finished.
I love how the princesses are known by their initials.

Hmm mixed results! I was pronouncing it ‘eye-ella’ in my head but I guess it doesn’t really matter if people say ‘ay (like the capital letter) ella’.

Thanks for the compliments guys  I’ll definitely keep you posted. I’m still in the plotting stages at the moment. I have the first few Ayella chapters worked out, one [name]Cash[/name] and two [name]Robin[/name].

I know this isn’t exactly what your asking about but I hope you don’t mind me saying, I think your bigger issue here is that the names are sorta all over the place. You said this is an alternate universe but is the contery fictional as well? Or is it an alternate version of a real place (i.e. [name]Italy[/name],Germany,etc)? I ask beacuse the names you’ve picked come from all sorts of places, for example the last name von Gartenfeld would suggest [name]German[/name] roots so dose [name]Olav[/name],[name]Ulrich[/name] and [name]Emmerich[/name], however [name]Nicoletta[/name],[name]Raphella[/name],Genovetta suggest Italian, then you have French in [name]Lucienne[/name] and English in things like [name]Grace[/name] and [name]Robin[/name], not to mention Ayella which seems to be one you made up yourself.

Another thing is you said “A city in a parallel world to ours in which Christianity never took off. People still worship a set of Greek style Gods.” if that’s the background your using why are you using such classic names? The majority of these names only every came into common use because of Christianity (especially because they were names of saints, i.e [name]Benedicta[/name]) therefor without that influence it’s rather doubtful they’d have stayed in use. Especially if they are still worshiping the Greek gods you’d see those names influencing what people are named, so you’d be more likely to have say a [name]Princess[/name] Apollina then a [name]Benedicta[/name]. You most definatly wouldn’t see [name]Maria[/name] or Magdelena which are Biblical names.

I’m not sure i’m explaining myself well but I hope you understand what i’m saying, you want to make sure your alternate universe makes sense logically or else it sounds like your just using an AU so you don’t have to worry about history.

Ooh lots of points to talk about

  1. Ledanrod is [name]London[/name] basically and I’ve not managed to find a good name for [name]England[/name] yet. Basically the map is the same but I suppose country boundaries might be a little different. There’s also a rather extensive language (representing/replacing Latin I suppose) and a runic and cursive alphabet.

  2. When I was naming the royal family I was trying to make Genovetta’s side Italianesque and have [name]Emmerich[/name]'s family come from [name]German[/name] ancestry, hence the surname.

  3. I didn’t even THINK about the saints names, you’re quite right. I’ll have to take all the Christianity themed ones out. The various gods they worship are similar to Greek and [name]Roman[/name] ones but the names are very different.

Examples of names: [name]Jala[/name] ([name]Hal[/name]-a) is the main God, she has a younger brother Archaic ([name]Cay[/name]) who is the God of [name]Love[/name]. [name]Cay[/name]'s two friends are Jemin (God of Flowers) and Cirrus (God of Health/Medicine). There was also Jessander (who was a really bad dragon slayer and was made a god after he died)

I wrote various ballads and folk tales about the gods when I was younger which is where the names come from. In the ‘modern’ world each god has his or her own church called an Order and people subscribe to these churches the way you’d support a football team (ie you wear their colours and symbols etc) They pay fees to worship there but the church makes sure it looks out for its members and can provide housing, education etc.

Funnily enough I based Cydrid’s name from Cirrus’ as I was imagining her family would be a member of the Order of Cirrus. I should probably make up some more, lol.

  1. Yeah, Cydrid and Ayella are the ones I made up just because I liked how they sounded and for the aforementioned connection to Cirrus with Cydrid.

Thanks for pointing that out anyway! : D I’ll go through them and have a chop and change then post back with new ideas.

Ok. So here’s what I did:

1. I found all the information I’d already written down about the world including any short stories and a list of gods.
2. I made a list of all the characters names.
3. I put the names into an Excel spread sheet and matched up any feminine and masculine versions of the same name.
4. For each name I tried to find a reference in its root to the name of a god or a place name or a word in the language. e.g Gordy’s surname Cammish comes from the place Cambria (Wales) and the names Andarry (F) and Andaru (M) come from the name of the moon god Andar.
5. I looked at the names I’d chosen for the characters in this book and swapped out names/changed names to match the style of the name list.

And here’s how it looks now:
