Charlotte vs Olivia

Hello all, it’s me again. I recently posted about a name for our baby girl arriving soon, who will be little sister to [name_f]Camilla[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] original post was about [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] vs [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f], but my husband has vetoed [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]. He loves [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], but is also open to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. I like both names, and both work with the middle name and surname.

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is slightly more popular than [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] where we live, but both names are very popular (~1% baby girls). I’m a little worried that having [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] may make people think of the royal family, although I’m not sure how much that matters. I’d prefer both names to be used in full and am not a fan of nicknames, but I know I won’t be able to control that (and in Australia where I live, almost every name is nicknamed!).

I am really torn and don’t know how to make the decision! In the end I think we’d both be fine with either name. We can’t use the other as the middle name as we are using a family name for that. Does anybody have any comments to help me pick one? Thank you so much

I love both names, if I wanted to completely avoid nicknames I would use [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. I never heard anyone (where I am from) shorten [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] I grew up around the name and didn’t even know [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] or [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] were nicknames for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. Everyone I know named [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] goes by “Liv” or “Livy”.

I prefer [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] by leaps and bounds. While both are beautiful names, [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] comes across as more timeless and unaffected imo. It’s also easier to say in full and less likely to be shortened to a nickname, whereas ditto above poster - everyone I know called [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] goes by [name_f]Liv[/name_f] too! I think that extra syllable makes it just that much longer and more susceptible to nicknames.

I will admit [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] makes me think of the royal family on it’s own, so the addition of [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] doesn’t make much difference for me in that regard  I think the two names are lovely together as sisters.

definitely olivia. popularity wise (for you), and sound wise. the royal family association for charlotte and camilla is there but not overwhelming, though.

I personally prefer [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] by far and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is more likely to be shortened where I live

Both are lovely. I personally prefer [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] slightly and think it pairs well with [name_f]Camilla[/name_f]. Actually the only [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] I know always goes by her full name but I know a [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] who goes by [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]

Firstly love [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] :two_hearts:

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is DEFINITELY [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] honestly I’m not Olivia’s biggest fan I just find the name tiresome whereas [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is very classic and elegant. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] feels so timeless and personally I don’t think the royal connection is too obvious that wouldn’t immediately come too me when thinking about the names. Also every [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] I know is [name_f]Liv[/name_f] or [name_f]Livvy[/name_f] whereas I feel I know more Charlotte’s who are just [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] & [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] would be such a sweet sibling set.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] want to put forward the suggestion of [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Odette[/name_f] and [name_f]Blythe[/name_f].

Good luck

Both names are great and have a good fit with big sister [name_f]Camilla[/name_f]! I have a slight preference for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], which is a timeless classic for me. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is gentle and elegant on the other end, so you can’t go wrong with these options. In your situation, I would vote for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] because like other people pointed out, it is less often shortened to a NN.

Definitely [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] I think - it’s a much better stylistic match for [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] in my opinion, and more timeless. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] feels much more overused to me, even though both names are popular!

this is so funny because my parents were torn between Charlotte and Olivia when naming my sister! they went for Olivia in the end and it suits her vivacious personality so well :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: so I have a bias for Olivia :yum:

Camilla and Olivia go beautifully well together! :two_hearts: an issue that may occur when having 2 siblings’ names starting with the same letter may be postage. I know that my mum has complained a lot that her and her sister (who had names beginning with the same letters) always had their mail confused. not sure if that’s an issue these days though :joy:

That’s really surprising to me that [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is more popular than [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] where you live! Here I feel like every other girl is named [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] isn’t a name heard around here basically ever.

I prefer [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]! I think that [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] fit really nicely together. I like that they have similar sounds but aren’t too identical. [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] have very different feels to me. [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] feels warm and unique. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] feels plain and average. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] feels classic and timeless.
