Chet vs Chester

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I just found out today that we’re having a little boy! [name_f]My[/name_f] husband’s grandfather was [name_m]Chester[/name_m] “[name_m]Chet[/name_m]”. We’d like our son to be [name_m]Chet[/name_m] but I personally can’t get over how old/nerdy [name_m]Chester[/name_m] sounds. I don’t want my kid to be made fun of when it comes time for roll call in school. At the same time, I see the benefits of a formal first name like [name_m]Chester[/name_m] for things like resume and wedding, etc. vs. just naming him [name_m]Chet[/name_m].

Any formal name alternatives out there to [name_m]Chester[/name_m]? [name_m]Charles[/name_m] is the only one we can think of.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer [name_m]Chester[/name_m] “[name_m]Chet[/name_m]” or [name_m]Chet[/name_m] as the given name?

Also any middle name suggestions? We have thought of [name_m]Taft[/name_m] (a family name).

Last name is Skemper.

I prefer [name_m]Chester[/name_m], but you shouldn’t use a name you don’t like

I do prefer [name_m]Chester[/name_m] to [name_m]Chet[/name_m] personally, but it’s up to you which one you prefer!

Perhaps [name_m]Cheston[/name_m] or [name_u]Chesley[/name_u]?

I think Chester nn Chet works better on a person. Chet reminds me of the artist Chet Faker (not a bad association) and also Chet Hanks (kind of a bad association) so I like the separation Chester gives. At the same time I don’t love the double Er ending of your last name with Chester…hmm.

Maybe Winchester could work as a formal name? That feels a little more rugged than Chester on it’s own. And you could also use Win if you/he wanted later in life, too.

I was curious so I went searching and found this nameberry thread from a year ago that might offer some more options to you:

I think if you’re going to call him [name_m]Chet[/name_m] and if you prefer [name_m]Chet[/name_m], I’d call him that. I also think [name_m]Chet[/name_m] Skemper sounds better than [name_m]Chester[/name_m] Skemper

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the suggestion of [name_u]Chesley[/name_u]!

I think [name_m]Chester[/name_m] is super cute! I like it. I don’t like [name_m]Chet[/name_m] as a stand alone name. As a nickname sure, but I like [name_m]Chester[/name_m] as the full name.

I actually quite like [name_m]Chester[/name_m]! [name_m]Chester[/name_m] nn [name_m]Chet[/name_m] is adorable!

I love [name_m]Chester[/name_m] and [name_m]Chet[/name_m]!

Chessley I love too.

I like both but I prefer [name_m]Chet[/name_m] Skemper!

I like both but prefer [name_m]Chet[/name_m] with your last name! I don’t think [name_m]Chet[/name_m] needs a full name, though [name_m]Charles[/name_m] certainly works.

You can totally use [name_m]Chet[/name_m] as a full name. It does sound better with your surname too.
I personally love [name_m]Chester[/name_m] too and don’t think he would be teased for sounding nerdy but I think you should choose a name you love

I also prefer [name_m]Chester[/name_m]. It’s very on trend, so I really doubt he’d get made fun for it! Also I work in the school system and name teasing doesn’t really seem to be much of a thing anymore.

I love [name_m]Chester[/name_m] but if it’s not calling to you then [name_m]Chet[/name_m] works beautifully!

Nn names are the best! We had a great uncle [name_m]Chet[/name_m] who was also a [name_m]Chester[/name_m]. Go for [name_m]Chet[/name_m]!
