Some names I liked when I was younger:
[name]Hayley[/name] - Still like it, but too popular and I prefer [name]Hailey[/name] now. Not on my list but not totally out either.
[name]Oceane[/name] - Off my list. I think I found this in a baby book and like it because it was French and I love the ocean. Too obvious for me.
[name]Riley[/name] - I met a little boy with this name and LOVED it. Now it’s popular and trendy (thanks little girl Ryleighs and Rilees!). Still love it for a boy but not sure.
[name]Braden[/name] - I’ve loved this name for a while. I’m sad that the -aden trend happened, because it made the name unusable for me. I don’t want to use a super trendy name (even though I wouldn’t be using the trendy spelling!). Plus my friend’s son is [name]Kaeden[/name], so I’d rather them not have rhyming names.
I always loved [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Theodore[/name], and [name]Percival[/name] since I was a little kid. But I’ve added a lot of new ones. And there are names I outgrew… for example, [name]Nancy[/name], [name]Mary[/name], [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Sean[/name], [name]Angela[/name], and [name]Richard[/name]. And when I was really little, I liked names like “[name]Rainbow[/name] Sparking Sunlight” (that was what I named one of my dolls when I was three) or “Cookie [name]Apple[/name]” (ditto). No kids, so I haven’t ‘used’ any of my favorite names, but I have in stories!
When I was little I made up exotic, long names you couldn’t remember after I had used it. I still sometimes make up names for my nonhuman characters, using Latin. Some of the real names I loved include [name]Laura[/name], [name]Fiona[/name], [name]Lydia[/name], [name]Samantha[/name] and [name]Alexander[/name]. Guess boys names just didn’t have the same charm as girls. However, I still love pretty much all of these except [name]Laura[/name].
I’m still fond of them.
[name]Evangeline[/name], [name]Allison[/name], [name]Rebecca[/name], [name]Alyssa[/name], [name]Ashley[/name], [name]Brittany[/name].
I’d consider [name]Evangeline[/name], [name]Allison[/name]/[name]Alison[/name], [name]Rebecca[/name]/[name]Rebekah[/name] and [name]Ashley[/name] in the middle spots for sure.
The names I liked as a kid (in the 80s) were [name]Stephanie[/name] and [name]Natalie[/name]. [name]Both[/name] seem dated today. Plus a lot of the names I used to like won’t work with our last name.
I loved [name]Rowan[/name] since I was a preteen, and I never had any doubts I would have a daughter named [name]Rowan[/name] one day. But all my other favorites from childhood/teen years are pretty much off my list. I used to love [name]Lily[/name] and I slipped and told one of my older cousins when I was around 13 and when she got pregnant and few years later, she named her daughter [name]Lily[/name]. Waaaay too popular now for me!
I also remember begging my mom for one of those realistic looking baby dolls when I was 9 or so and when I finally got one, I named him [name]Nathaniel[/name]. A name I still like, but definitely don’t love.
I had a stuffed unicorn named [name]Evening[/name] [name]Star[/name]. I thought that was the coolest name [name]EVER[/name] when I was little.
After all these years, I still absolutely adore the name [name]Charlotte[/name]. [name]Even[/name] though it’s insanely popular right now (boo) I’d still use it. There are lots of names that aren’t appealing to me anymore because of their popularity, but [name]Charlotte[/name] is still at the top of my list!
Here is the list I made when I was 14. I am 33 now. The only ones still on my list are [name]Sylvia[/name], [name]Victoria[/name], and [name]Elizabeth[/name] for girls. None of the boy names are on my current boys list.
Girls:
[name]Simone[/name] [name]Alexandra[/name]
[name]Jessica[/name] [name]Anne[/name]
[name]Kimberly[/name] [name]Rae[/name]
[name]Hillary[/name] [name]Anne[/name]
[name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Monique[/name]
[name]Victoria[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Anne[/name]
[name]Caitlin[/name] [name]Michelle[/name]
[name]Ceara[/name] [name]Monique[/name]
[name]Alison[/name] [name]Jane[/name]
[name]Olivia[/name] [name]Rae[/name]
[name]Tiffany[/name] [name]Anne[/name]
[name]Brittany[/name] [name]Michelle[/name]
Boys:
[name]Jonathan[/name] [name]Ryan[/name]
[name]Andrew[/name] [name]Brady[/name]
[name]Brandon[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
[name]Shawn[/name] [name]Brady[/name]
[name]Matthew[/name] [name]Ryan[/name]
[name]Clint[/name] [name]Patrick[/name]
[name]Cameron[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
[name]Caleb[/name] [name]Andrew[/name]
[name]Kevin[/name] [name]Tyler[/name]
[name]Jerod[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
When I was very young and in Catholic school, I remember thinking three sisters named [name]Faith[/name], [name]Hope[/name], and [name]Grace[/name] would be so cute and lovely. SOOO not my style anymore.
I got into really flowy names as a 'tween, like [name]Seraphina[/name] and [name]Gabriel[/name]. I loved the name [name]Gabriel[/name] for years and years and years, but one day I woke up and realized it was just okay to me. Then my cousin named her son [name]Gabriel[/name], so that’s definitely off any list right now.
I so wish I saved my diaries from when I was young! I had pages and pages of name combos.
My answer varies. When I was in the third and fourth grades I obsessively studied ancient [name]Egypt[/name], particularly the Amarna dynasty (aka [name]King[/name] Tut’s family). I thought Tutankhamen would be the coolest name ever for a boy. Later, when I realized I was the only person I knew who could pronounce Tutankhamen, I settled for [name]Ramses[/name]. [name]Ramses[/name] is no longer on my list, but I think he’s very worthy of consideration for a modern boy.
On the other end of the spectrum, [name]Helen[/name] has been on my list for as long as I can remember. [name]Cora[/name] and [name]Benjamin[/name] have been there for a while as well.
^^ I knew a [name]Ramsey[/name] in high school. I never asked of it was a nickname for [name]Ramses[/name], but just assumed it was.
@rowanasabe, I’ve used the back pages of every journal I can remember for name lists. When I started a new one, I always transferred my favorites from the old one to the new. Most came and went, but my top boy’s name made its debut in my fifth grade journal and has been #1 ever since.
HA! This made me laugh; when I was little (way, way before high school) I had a list of names I loved that I had as my pretend extra mn’s, I used to rattle them off with my full name (always in the same order) so often that I can still remember them:
[name]Agatha[/name] [name]Mary[/name] [name]Winifred[/name] [name]Primrose[/name] [name]Princess[/name] [name]Bambi[/name]
Yes, seriously. I may regret sharing this!
I used mine! So now both the doll in my parents’ basement and my daughter are [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]One[/name] was [name]Beth[/name] and the other is [name]Libby[/name], though
I remember liking [name]James[/name] (my son) since I was in Elementary school, too, but it was among many!
I [name]LOVE[/name] that!
I think I was influenced by soap operas! In middle school I wanted to name my sons [name]Austin[/name] and [name]Lucas[/name] (thank you, Days of Our Lives.)
At that time I also wanted to name a daughter after myself, but spelled [name]Erynn[/name] (the way my mom had wanted to spell my name, but was too chicken.)
In high school, it was a boy named [name]Jack[/name], and a daughter with [name]Jayne[/name] in her name somewhere.
Once my husband and I got together though, the “J” names didn’t survive… they didn’t work with “[name]Jones[/name]”.
And most of our favorites became so popular ([name]Jack[/name], [name]Ava[/name], [name]Grace[/name], [name]Sophia[/name]) that we’ve since dropped them. We don’t want our kids to be a First Name Last Initial, like we both were.
So our names are fresh. My son got a brand new name with a family middle, and any future names will be the same.
I loved the name Hallelujah when I was six. I didn’t know what does Hallelujah means, but I thank it is something beautiful.
[name]Vera[/name]-[name]Hope[/name] was my best friend in the volleyball club. I loved her name but today…
Growing up, my consistent favorites were [name]Abigail[/name] and [name]James[/name]. [name]James[/name] is still on my list (though not near the top), and [name]Abigail[/name] I still have a soft spot for even though she’s not on my list anymore.
Back in high school, my favorites were [name]Cody[/name] and [name]Keely[/name]. I thought their matchiness meant they’d be awesome for siblings. I’m glad I outgrew that sentiment!
I still like both names, but they’re no longer anywhere on my lists.
