[name_f]My[/name_f] daughter [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] is starting kindergarten in a few days. Her teacher emailed me a welcome letter this morning, and she asked if [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] preferred to be called by her name or something else, like [name_f]Emmie[/name_f], [name_f]Em[/name_f], etc.
I call her [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] at home, but she’s insisting that she wants to be called “Emmie”, which is fine. I don’t mind. However, I’ve never really thought about how to spell it. Being a name nerd, I want it to look nice. To me, “Emmy” doesn’t look so cute.
How would you spell it? [name_u]Or[/name_u] would you prefer she goes by [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]?
Maybe you can brainstorm various spelling s and ask her which one she thinks looks best. Because in the end she’ll be learning the spelling. Personally Inthink [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] seems straightforward which might be best as it’s a nickname and not the actual name…. So something straightforward mighty help in terms of subs and such who might also come in contact with her name.
I love [name_f]Emme[/name_f] or [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] out of curiosity, do you pronounce your [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] with the LINE ending or the LEEN ending?
Hmm of [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], [name_f]Emmie[/name_f], [name_f]Emme[/name_f], and Emi… I think I prefer [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] but if you don’t like the look don’t go with that one. [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] is super cute too. [name_f]Emme[/name_f] is great too but the -ie ending looks more cute to me. (Plus you can always turn that dotted i into a heart lol!)
If she’s insisting on it I’d just go with it, she may change her mind later anyway.
Let her go by Emmie/Emmy if she wants to. I think I find both of those would be more intuitive than the [name_f]Emme[/name_f] spelling, although that may well be a regional thing.
I would spell it [name_f]Emme[/name_f] or [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] if your don’t like the first one. But my go to spelling would be [name_f]Emme[/name_f]
Out of [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] and [name_f]Emi[/name_f] (I can’t think of any other options rn) I think [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] works best because it has two M’s like [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] does, and also the ‘line’ part of [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] has the i&e vowels like at the end of [name_f]Emmie[/name_f]
I love [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmie[/name_f]! I would let her spell it how ever she wants though. Show her all of the different possible spellings and ask her which one she prefers or is easier for her to spell.
I think in case the nickname perseveres beyond kindergarten, I would go with [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] or [name_f]Emme[/name_f], both of which look mature to me compared to [name_f]Emmie[/name_f]. And if it helps, [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is the only one that doesn’t have a dotted red line beneath it on my phone!
