Christina for an atheist?

I don’t think it will be weird since it’s just a middle name.

[name_m]Will[/name_m] it bother you if some religious stranger thinks you’re christian because you choose religious name? [name_m]Will[/name_m] it bother you if you meet religious parents of any [name_f]Christina[/name_f] and they tell you they choose this name because of religion? What would you think you met another [name_f]Christina[/name_f] and found out before or after that her parents are Muslim, Jews or Pagans or atheist?

Personally, I would never do this (as an atheist myself) - such names do not give me positive vibes (even though this is the name of one of my best friends). Having said that, I think it’s up to you and you alone to decide whether you feel comfortable with it. A lot of people are incredibly free and easy with the names of deities from other religions which they themselves are not part of, so I don’t see why this should be a special case. I don’t think it makes you a hypocrite at all, it is just a matter of what you are personally comfortable with.

You never know, she might grow up to become a [name_m]Christian[/name_m].

[name_f]Christina[/name_f] is common enough in the English-speaking world, and it’s a middle name, so is anyone really going to read that much into it? I doubt it. Besides, any assumption that you’re religious can be solved with a quick “No we’re not.”

If she turns out to be an atheist as well, or converts to a religion that isn’t Christianity, and it bothers her, she could always change it anyway.

[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Christina[/name_f] is a lovely combo. I say, go for it.

[name_f]EDIT[/name_f]: accidentally posted twice. Silly internet. Keeeeeep scrollin’.

From a [name_m]Christian[/name_m]'s point of view…

If I met a [name_f]Christina[/name_f], I would assume that she was a [name_m]Christian[/name_m]. I would be very confused (and slightly offended) if an athiest named their child [name_f]Christina[/name_f]. It is your personal choice, but this is my view. I would never name my child [name_m]Mohammed[/name_m] or [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], because that is not my faith. Some names ([name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], even [name_f]Priscilla[/name_f]) are in the Bible and do not strike me as outwardy religious. I do agree with @lawsonhaley – if you are completely athiest, avoid it like the plague. If you are just not religious, then it is okay to use it.

With [name_m]Christ[/name_m] being in the name, I definitely see it as more religious. Some names I think everyone can get away with, but some names just seem to be more common in certain groups. I’ve never met someone of the Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, etc faiths with [name_m]Christ[/name_m] in their name, which is why it feels like a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] name to me.
If you have a problem with people assuming you are [name_m]Christian[/name_m], you might want to consider whether it is worth it. Otherwise, if you love it and don’t care, go for it. People make assumptions about every name, so I think if you love it, that’s what matters.

I also think that this name is 1) going to be used as a middle name, and hardly anyone will know what her middle name is. and 2) This is a name for someone other than the poster here. [name_m]Just[/name_m] because the mother is an Atheist, this doesn’t mean the child will be, and [name_f]Christina[/name_f] never struck me as a religious name to begin with.

I’m an atheist and I don’t think it’s odd. I personally wouldn’t use it, but if it doesn’t make you uncomfortable, then there isn’t really a reason not too - it isn’t as if it’s sacred or anything. It never struck me as a christian name even though it has the word christ in it. Probably just because I’ve never thought about it before. I don’t meet people and think to myself “oh yes, she/he looks like a christian” or “she/he looks like a muslim”, you know?

I dont believe in God. But Im using [name_f]Christine[/name_f] for a middle slot because its a family name. I dont think it matters, its just a name. Sure the child might feel out of place, but if you just chose a name because you liked it, then it shouldnt matter. I also love the name [name_m]Christian[/name_m].

The thing is you never know who your child turns out to be. You can be super religious and name your children [name_m]Christian[/name_m] and [name_f]Christina[/name_f] and neither would turn out to be religious or christian, however, you could also name your child the most un-religious name as you’re an atheist and they want to become nuns.
If I met somebody names [name_m]Christian[/name_m] or [name_f]Christina[/name_f] I wouldn’t think they actually were christian, if i met somebody named [name_m]Christ[/name_m], that would be a different story.

[name_f]Christina[/name_f] is much too common for me to ever assume anything about her religious beliefs. I’d never assume a [name_f]Diana[/name_f] was pagan, either, nor would I think it odd if a non-pagan used [name_f]Diana[/name_f]. It’s no different, in my opinion. [name_f]Christina[/name_f] is free for anyone to use.
